Estate sales are the way to go not many people look really close at the books and most antique dealers don't know a lot about them.  My brother has thousand at his store only a few are worth anything

A book person   I love books .  Were the ones you got expensive or did you find them at an estate sale or somewhere people did not concern themselves with the fact they are first editions.  My brother once got The Complete Works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle from the early 1900's all signed and in excellent condition  for free when they were tossing it out in the trash at the thrift store next to his store.  He sold them to a collector for over a thousand dollars

They were rather expensive, but mostly due to the expensive shipping. The J.G. Ballard book's shipping was 2x the cost of the book itself, which was unfortunate, but I decided to bite the bullet and go through with the purchase as I couldn't find a first-edition anywhere else in such good condition.

Essential oils and an electric vaporiser for my mum's birthday.

Nice present. Do the essential oils go into the vaporizer, to scent the air, or are the two purchases unrelated?

Yes, the vaporiser is for the essential oils.  I've bought her oils before and she has some oil heaters that use candles to heat a shallow dish of oil, but the candles are a bit sooty and smelly and I think she'll find an electric vaporiser more convenient.  She particularly liked some orange oil that I got her previously, so I got her lemon and lime oils to expand her range of citrus scents, lavender to replace stuff that she's used up and also peppermint, rosemary and vanilla for variety.

Excellent! You are most resourceful, and seem to have a well-stocked kitchen!
