241Am is only an alpha emitter. Simple paper or tinfoil wrapping (foil is overkill for alpha particles, unless maybe they were ultra-high energy coming from a dedicated accelerator, even then I doubt more than a bare few would make it through)

But paper is quite sufficient to block the alpha radiation coming from those small ion sources.I've heard some rumors that some kinds of smoke alarm, perhaps older ones, are actually based upon neptunium, and not just as a daughter isotope from the decay of 241Am.

Not sure if its true, but damn, I'd just love to find some of those in my lab-scavenging endeavors.

They are not that hot I have some fiestaware that's a lot more radioactive

Uranium glass I presume?

Once I eventually manage to save up enough money to build the cyclotron/synchrotron I have my heart set on, I'm definitely going to have to get hold of some 238U and some beryllium to set it up as a neutron source, using the 'tron to produce an alpha particle beam, make some thin carbon plates for use as a moderator to slow the neutrons liberated by bombarding the beryllium down to thermal energies where they can be then captured by the depleted uranium targets.

(aiming of course for 239Pu and neptunium :)

I bought a used book at Amazon. I love it that you can sometimes find books for £0.01.
