Yes, the doctor said I have to sleep in either that black cast boot or the splint but he said I could stop sleeping in it in two weeks.

I don't really see how I could hurt my ankle while I am asleep.

I am guessing that the doctor wants your ankle to be supported at all times. I am glad you are not in Australia at the moment because the heat plus wearing the cast would probably drive you crazy.
