I don't know if there was anything unusual about it; it was the first time I'd tried keeping them together in the same tank.  The triops are well armoured and one of them was bigger than the minnows, so I thought they'd be ok together, and they cohabited for a week without problems, but I think the minnows learned to attack the book gills on the undersides of the triops, which are soft and relatively exposed.  Three triops were completely dismembered and I only found fragments of them, but two were mostly intact when I found them, and were only missing their gills.  The biggest one was still alive and was lying on it's back and moving it's legs back and forth when I found it, so I took it outside and squished it under my boot to euthanise it.

Blame Gilligan and the skipper. If they'd have kept to the harbour like they were s'posed to, then your triops would be safe.
