Your bum hip is the left one, correct?  Mine is the right one. I am fairly sure that unconsciously adopting the bad habit of favoring my dodgy right hip joint has caused the back problems I have been suffering recently.

Oddly, it feels strong and works just fine within about sixty or seventy percent of my normal range of motion (so, it makes no sense that I have begun to favor it, but I could tell by my tracks in the snow this winter that I was doing so), but there are certain directions of movement that I am very careful NOT to push towards the limit.
