Do you have any tips for reducing the effect? I am not intending to actually get in a boat, really I am just trying to get some semblence of fitness and the rowing machine seems the most effective out of the lot we have.

The blisters show where I apply most of the force. But the handles are rubberised so I cant see how I could reduce the impact. Maybe I am too forceful I guess, though not being forceful defeats the point of using the machine.

Gloves would be the only thing I can recommend. 

You don't need to have a death-grip on the handle.  After a couple sessions though, your hands will be used to it.

Rowing is an excellent exercise.  You're using a lot of muscles that don't get used when jogging or bicycling.  Make sure you use proper form though.

I should probably get some gloves then, great excuse to enjoy the weather. Death grip is probably what I have been doing tbh. Thanks for the tips :)
