Quite a few very clever people - including, of course, Karl Marx - were either Marxists or at least very much in favour of the basic concept. It is not at all the same as what the Soviet Union then became.

Christopher Hitchens was one. :orly: Of course, I believe that he was, above all else, a contrarian. He even wrote a book on the subject.
