To those in the UK are you going to 'opt-in'
« on: July 27, 2013, 01:11:27 PM »
Quote
U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron announced Monday that British Internet service providers (ISPs) must install porn filters and require customers to opt-in for adult content. Cameron said the policy is aimed at combating child porn and the “corroding influences” of sexual content in the U.K., but several people are unhappy with the plan. Reports have linked the filters to controversial Chinese company Huawei, and others have found that the filters will block much more than just porn. Some ISPs have publicly refused to force the filters on their users.

Seems a bit silly and from the rest of the article it looks like it will cover more than porn too, but for gods sake let's just think of the children and protecting them from the “corroding influences” of the web and get this thing in place.  Don't worry once it's in place they can adjust it as they please depending on what they want to protect you from.

I think this is a disgrace, and I agree with Parts, it's the first step towards more internet censorship. I notice that Huawei, the firm behind the Chinese censorship, appears to be involved :o
I cant believe theres not more opposition to this. They are clearly using the child abuse stuff to justify something, that people would otherwise be against.

I doubt if I'll even get the letter to to opt in, as I use a dongle, and I doubt if Ive registered my address.

On a personal level, I'm not bothered by it. I know how to get around the blocks, by using a proxy.

It just seems so wrong. Cameron is a disgrace.

And if I sound a little bit butthurt here, it's because I am seriously butthurt by this.

If this is enforced, it's a slippery slope to outright censorship. What constitutes porn, for example? Too many blurs and greys online for that, meaning a lot of websites (ie. this) could easily be blocked. That's not even counting the Chinese filters and the other stuff.

Stopping the circulation of child porn online is a very difficult task since there's a lot of grey as to what is child porn and what isn't. Family photos of kids (the usual ones of kids in baths and such) can be mistaken for being child porn when taken out of context, for example. Blocking child porn will not stop people seeing child porn if they really wished. For example, proxies, Tor etc. can easily bypass it. Simply put, there is no clear solution to it. There's no magic button that says "remove CP" otherwise it would have been solved long ago.

This whole thing is retarded and anyone who supports this nonsense is also retarded.

It kind of reminds me of the gun debate. you can ban guns all you want, and people will still get them.
Same thing with Child Porn

Yeah theres nothing going on though. No trend leading to a society where average people basically live in prison. Lol.

Prison and prison...something like Brave New World with a slight touch of "1984".  :grrr:

Exactly. Better watch out, man. Common sense is a serious trigger to some. Maybe with more ridiculousness like this shoved up their asses, my European brothers and sisters might be ready to take a stand. We might even be able to fight together.

I wonder if the 'BBC Parliament' channel will be banned.

Don't they show cunts and assholes all day before the 9pm watershed?

Not sure if i will have to opt in.  Not had any notifications.  Virgin media have been preventing me from access to some torrent sites, though,  so if they are willing to filter out torrents i am sure porn will follow.

I also have a dongle,  and I can access next doors internet. Sometimes net gear too so I am quietly confident I will not be hit with any disruptions.  :eyebrows:
