We used Bunsen burners in school. Chemistry classes.

I also remember beakers   :nerd!:   and Erlenmeyer flasks!  And failing grades!

I find a hotplate MUCH more useful than I ever did the bunsen burners we used in school, aside from the odd time that something needs much more heat than it can supply, for flame pyrolysis of various things, for that I use a propane torch. The built-in magnetic stirrer my hotplate has is REALLY useful though.

Organic chem generally requires much more precise temperature control than the stuff they teach at school.

For example (bitch included)...I left a batch of an esterified derivative of loperamide (immodium) about 5 minutes too long, and damn near cooked it to intractable tar in the bottom of my flask.

Its a potent opioid, actually. Just can't cross the blood-brain barrier. Which is a good thing, as it is, as it gets metabolized to a neurotoxin, but some derivatives of it lack that unfortunate pair of properties.

I've synthed and trialled the propionyl ester of loperamide, and it was surprisingly potent, even with my longterm tolerance to pain medication. In fact it was a good thing for once, or even at a low dose, this stuff would have flattened me.

Our son is sure strong, he hates going to bed so he is just like me. So he keeps crying and screaming because he just doesn't want to go to sleep and it's 11:44 PM. We have been trying for over an hour now. My husband came in and took over and he was fine and then he started screaming and crying and finally my husband kicked me out of the room so he can try and get him to go to sleep because he thinks I am going to save him. None of us are giving in.

I always found them unwieldy things to use in school....not to mention there always had to be some smartarse who thought it a good idea to fuck with the gas taps.

Although I wish my hotplate were capable of keeping a sizeable container of sodium hydroxide molten, for electrolysis..I wouldn't want a gas supply turned on during that process, last time I ran that, my tank of argon ran dry part way through, letting a fair sized blob of molten sodium metal go off with a fairly respectable bang :D

That was an entertaining few hours to say the least. Although if I had been after the higher alkali metals it wouldn't have been so forgiving. Lithium slowly oxidizes in air, fizzes in water sodium will pop and go flying (when molten) or in contact with water..potassium on the other hand, goes off with a bang. Never tried isolating rubidium or caesium, but I've seen a video of the latter, where a small amount was dropped into a bathtub. Which got blown to smithereens.

Have you ever tried a five minute regime?

Tuck him in, bed time story and all, the usual first bedtime routine, make it a nice time, and, then leave, telling him you will check in on him in five minutes.
Don't go in before that, no matter how hard he howls. And, after five minutes, tuck him in, quickly, give him a kiss, and tell him you will check in on him, in five minutes, make it quick.
It may take you a couple of nights, but, your son will learn that you will be close at hand, when he needs you. Mum or dad out of sight does not mean they are completely gone. After a few nights he will very likely fall asleep within half an hour. And, after a week or so, you can increase the intervals of checking in on him to six, seven, eight, etc. minutes. It's a friendlier way than just letting the kid howl till it falls asleep, because you will be learning him that you will be there, he doesn't have to be anxious, mom and dad are around, just not in his room.

This will only work if you do it consistently. Do not make the intervals longer than promised, he has to be able to rely on you. And do not do anything more than quickly tucking him in, with a kiss, and the promise to check in on him after five minutes.
