I don't want to go to uni this week. We are supposed to be running focus groups this week and I am hoping I won't end up being the facilitator of any of them. I have a hard enough time talking in front of a lot of people - this is my idea of a nightmare.

  MIXING BITCHIN' WITH JOY ...

I have found out why the massive pain in my hip has not gone away, even after having a total hip joint replacement, almost a year ago.

My "New" Orthopedic (sorry, I tried to spell as if I was speaking English, but my spellcheck goes nuts) specialist has offered me another option.

It seems that the last surgeon did not take enough of the old bone away and some of my old fractures (Yes, he pointed out that I had fractured my hip joint seven times and kept on walking on it with no chance for it to heal) are still affecting my recovery. On 2013/01/15 I am going back under the knife to AGAIN replace parts of my upper femur.

I have a great deal more confidence in this new doc than I had in the last two. He and his staff actually took eight X-rays of my lower back, hip and pelvis to get a more accurate concept of what was needed to get me going.

In the mean time, I am to learn to use a cane as I was instructed. Also, I am to get off of my pain meds, before the surgery. (Tall Call!!)

SO, a Bitch and a  WOW!!

It's great to get an answer, even though you do face another surgery.
I hope it goes well and fixes the problem for good this time.  :viking:

Thanks. I was really scared the first time, but this whole thing of taking even more of me away to replace with metal seems way worse, somehow.

I try to hold myself strong, but I am terrified.

Have you had any bad reactions to the metal so far?   :nerd!:

Out of interest: "learn to use a cane as I was instructed"? Is there a special way you can use the cane to avoid pain rather than merely support the bad hip?

Glad this one knows what to look for, and what to do.

Wishing you luck, and courage, going through all of it again. And, with getting off of all your meds.

With a better fit, the recovering should go a lot smoother.

I hope it goes well and you have a smooth recovery.  It makes sense that the old injuries could still be causing you pain.

I do know that I was told that House is doing it wrong.  You're supposed to hold the cane on your good side and move it forward when you take a step on your bad side.  If you hold the cane on your bad side, you lean into the bad side and put even more pressure on it.

I worked with a man who used a cane.  When he was a toddler he had polio.  He recovered, but fell out of a tree as a youngster and broke a leg.  The doctor put his leg in a cast and caused the leg to stop growing (this was probably in the 1930's).  One leg was about 6 inches shorter.  He had an enormous built-up sole on that shoe.  When he was at university after WW2 a vet who also used a cane told him Callaway's advice.
