 A good expectorant cough syrup would loosen any congestion so that your coughs could
 relieve it.  I take a cough syrup that is a combined expectorant and cough suppressant.

PA had that problem one time.  After almost nonstop coughing one day I gave him a pain pill in desperation.  It somehow stopped the coughing and he was able to go to sleep soon afterwards.  Don't know how hard it would be for you to get a pain pill..

Was there codeine in the painkiller by any chance?

Codeine does stop the coughing reflex, and is used for that, when people cough out of reflex, without there being anything to cough up.

It's really windy today, and it was the collection day for paper, plastic and metal recycling.  The council gives us a plastic box and reusable woven sacks for our recycling stuff, and they disappeared down the street after they'd been emptied.  There's also a fair number of plastic bottles galloping down the street, and bits of soggy paper and other crap lying around.

 That sounds like my neighborhood, minus the woven bags!  When I got home tonight,
 I picked up the scattered recyclable stuff that I recognized as mine, put it in my plastic
 box, and brought it back inside.  Winter cold has arrived at last!

 I weighed myself at the mall tonight, on a scale outside the nutritional-supplements
 store, but it's on wheels so every day it may be positioned a little differently.  There's
 definitely something wrong with it, because it says I weigh the same as I did two weeks
 ago, and I know for a fact that I weigh less because of how I feel and because of the
 way certain body parts have gotten smaller since I started my diet.
