I did dig a hole around it with a steak knife, but it was pretty far down. I had to let it work it's way the rest of the way out.

  I am similarly naive.  I once explained to a jaded older friend that because of my limited
  life experience, I just assume that everyone is clean, sober, monogamous and law-abiding.  She said,
  "And in reality, everyone is drinking, drugging and fucking as much as they can get away with."

Ah yes.  PA was surprised to learn that the developmentally disabled can be as cruel and vicious as the rest of us.

You should see her room. No mature adult would keep a room like that. So yes indeed, she does need to grow the fuck up.

WolFish, your ex sounds like Kayleigh. Though I saw her cleaning out the litter tray yesterday. After 3 months. The cat started peeing down the bath's drain because the litter tray was too dirty for him to use.

Three months? Argh. Kayleigh wins the prize there, I think. My ex cluttered the living room - she is one of those credit card switchers - with so much junk mail that I never went in there. She claimed she had to read it all before she could throw it away. The reason she cluttered the living room is because she could not get into her bedroom - we shared one and she had another about the same size. Mine was closet sized so I kept everything in boxes in the basement.  Her bedroom was so full of junk that she had to climb over things to get inside. Mature in the body but not in good sense, I guess.

Maybe Kayleigh has ADHD? When mine is not under control the house looks a disaster (it does now). I keep cleaning and it looks like nothing happened.

In any case, even ADHD is not an excuse for being dirty. Our mess only has nasty stuff when the mouse gets a hold of something. Kayleigh's mess sounds like a health hazard.

Kayleigh definitely has ADHD. She was dxed when she was 5. She stopped taking Ritalin when she was 16. When she took it again a few years ago, it didn't do any good as she didn't take it regularly. She has more focus than I do without meds but she mostly wants to focus on her video games, not cleaning up the house.
