... and I do not wear spectacles for fashion. I have an advancing astigmatism, advancing by the decade,  but when corrected properly I have what is "commonly known" on these shores as "20/05 vision" which basically means that I can see just fine and a bit more than most.

Problem is for me is that without my corrective lenses, I can barely tell which cloud is dark and which cloud is light, since I generally see eight to twenty images of everything I see, without my glasses. The glasses clear it all up for me.

Again, I see ok within a few feet (a few meters) or so. But to see the details on a small coin, for instance (something I have always done, but is lost to me, due to my age, mostly) is impossible, without my bi-focal spectacles.  More than a few hundred feet, though (say a bit more than two hundred meters) I start to see double/triple/quadruple, etc.

SO, driving more than a block or two without my glasses is idiotic, mostly.

All that is aside from needing to be careful with my "seeing" equipment.

Bering careful is hard!!

Oh, and don't get me started on glasses. Due to my astigmatism, not to mention the fact that I'm getting older and need bifocals AND another pair for work, they cost a fortune.

It cost me $538 today. That is just the lenses, not the frames. I need the Irlen tint (which is bluey purple this time), prisms, light plastic, anti-scratch, UV filters and anti-reflective coating on mine. My eyes are changing in regards to getting older and sooner or later I am going to need 2 pairs of glasses. Not looking forward to that.

The ballast went on the light in my shed.  Cheep florescent lights are real hit and miss I have some that lasted over 15 years others are done in less than six months

That is a great site but unfortunately it is American. Plus I need specifically tinted lenses. Not sure if you have heard of Irlen before? It helps me mainly with yellow light which to me is overwhelming, especially in shopping centres. And driving. Definitely helps with that. My quick bitch about that is that my glasses take about a month to be delivered.

We have pretty affordable glasses here, also for the more simple progressive and toric lenses. With standard non glare and superlight. (could be around €150, including frame).
But Irlen, never saw that cheaper than €600. No way I can afford that, so have not even tried. Think all three here would benefit from it.
Did get my daughter selftinting glasses, they help too. That did cost a bit extra, not much.
I have a plan for her, saving up €6 a month. Every year she can get new glasses, with frame, superlight non glare glass and with toric lens. Without the plan I would be paying double, still not expensive. I do pay a bit on top of that for the selftinting.

Yeah, with Irlen you have to pay for the testing as well. Mine didn't cost much this year because it was quick. I only needed two layers of colour.
