I never use soap, but I do wash regularly.  I don't get any complaints.

what is the rule of thumb about fruits vs. vegetables.

is it that fruit has seeds?
is that why tomatoes are fruits?
what about banana's? ?they don't have seeds. ?or do they...

A fruit is a sexual body of a plant (a ripened ovary, plus it's contents); usually the result of pollination during a flowering phase, but infertile fruiting bodies can be induced via hormonal treatments or by breeding the plant to do this itself.  Banannas have been bred to be seedless, and now must reproduce asexually via cuttings.  They do still have vestigial structures relating to their seed-bearing past though (the tiny black bits in the middle).  Vegetables are the non-sexual parts of a plant; the roots (carrots), leaves (spinach), stem (celery) and anything else that isn't an ovary or seed.  Technically, things like bread and pasta are processed fruit too.
