So there is another play being produced about Helen Keller. And a young actress named Abigail Breslin has been chosen to play Helen Keller. But a disability advocate group apparently believe that the producers have not made a sincere effort to be inclusive of the deaf/blind community. What do you believe to be the case? Are there qualified deaf actresses out there. Or is it best to go with a proven talent? Here is a link to read for yourself. http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/movie-talk-abigail-breslin-helen-keller.html

Was Dustin Hoffman really an aspie spaz when he played Rain Man?  No.

Was Tom Hanks really dying of AIDS when he was in Philidelphia?  No.

You choose someone based on their acting abilities and how well they will play the part.

To play the devils advocate here ebf Hanks could have had had Harvey Fierstein inject him with HIV.  :indeed:

Sure, and Abigail Breslin can stab ice picks in her ears to be deaf.

But there are qualified actresses out there who are deaf. Take Marlee Matlin, for example. A highly successful career and it all started because someone gave her a break and she starred in a movie about a deaf woman. This is an opportunity for someone from the community who is representing a pillar of strength in the deaf/blind world, to portray her. That would be a huge honour from an artistic point of view.

That being said, Broadway has been taking a big hit over the past 5 years and even off off broadway shows are having trouble meeting budget so I can see why the director made the decision that he did.

The theatre/broadway community works differently than the movie community does though. It's more grass roots. If the economy wasn't suffering as badly as it currently is, i think they would have put more effort into finding someone from the deaf/blind community to play the role. It certainly would have gotten them a ton of positive press. The issue really is that they went with a huge budget in a bad market. They basically screwed themselves.

I bet if I posted this at AFF I would have got at least some of those mfs wound up. One person there who seemed to have some modicum of common sense was the guy running the place. But that was months ago.

I wonder what the workman's comp insurance would be on a deaf and blind actress?

Anything they are "activists".

That would be pretty high since both the yelling loudly and gesticulating frantically options would be out.

I don't think it varies greatly (I've been doing theatre since '87) because I've worked with deaf/blind actors before. They do have extra stipulations to follow in terms of safety but usually the actor is given a support person from the crew who keeps an eye on them.

Some people fail to see the difference between activism and common sense.
