Title: The Sophist Method
Post by: Scrapheap on June 24, 2007, 04:00:04 PM
I was always under the impression that the Sophist Method, in modern times is considered a bad mothod of debate.

As the word is currently used, it isn't considered a
reasonable form of debate. But, by the original meaning,
it is very much exactly how one is taught to do so. Using
every tool available to win an argument, ranging from
some emotional appeals, to the logic itself, to some
really minute details, which seem to have nothing to
do with the argument at hand - rather just improving
one's appearance.

Woah Soph can mean a lot of words!

THIS thread has officially changed title.

More fitting to what this site is about anyhow.
Though, we do need another thread.

Of course a person who is better at arguing their position can be more successful at arguing their case, against equally valid claims or even better claims.
I do think that lying, misrepresenting facts or making bogus inferences, is pretty weak.

BUT....

Making your opponent seem weak or flawed?
Intimidating them?
Using big words?
Questioning their motives?
Getting them to agree with you?
Bringing to bear their faults and prejudices (if relevant to your argument)?

Any of these types of things are all good. If they come up or you seek them out to get the best result from your argument, all good. so long as you do not do those three things i mentioned above.

I think it's still acceptable, if the parties involved are willing to accommodate subjective experience.
