Title: Make this illegal
Post by: Fun With Matches on May 21, 2017, 07:50:19 AM
This thread is for anything anyone wants to ban or make illegal:

I'll start: Round tablets and generally big tablets that are impossible to swallow, even if they are chopped in half:

People who don't use their turning signals! Drives me bonkers. Use your blinker thingy so I know that you're turning!!! So it should be illegal NOT to use them.

I'd have the filth made responsible when they fuck up. Like try to burn somebody's house down for example. Or coerce false confessions out of people by denying them essential medication unless they give a statement. (I did give one, it just didn't contain anything other than 'no comment' 'sorry no idea' and 'get fucked':P)

I thought that is illegal.  :orly: Most people don't use their turn signals here. I think it's because a lot of the roads are huge with turning lanes, so people get out of the habit of using them.  :dunno:

It's not strongly enforced in Canada. You could get a minor ticket if they decided to charge you but it's rare.

We have a small town nearby that has warned the entire state that the local turn signal usage ordinance will be enforced with vigor.

I always use my signals. I hate when people do shit in front of me that was not predicted or forewarned. It is a habit now. I even use my signals when I am the only car at a four-way stop sign.

Many people seem to drive as if using a turn signal is the same as giving away classified information to the enemy.

Telemarketers

In Indiana, we have a  "No Call"  law where telemarketers are prosecuted and or restricted from doing business in the state for calling us at home with spam shit.

Only problem is that if you have already done business with the company, they have a sort of exemption and can call us.
However, if you are on the No Call list and want to help, the State's Attorney General has a website where you can enter all the non-welcome callers numbers you have received and from what I have seen they shut them down.

Biggest problem I have is that I use AT&T  and every single day they text me with crap and sometimes call to inform me of upgrade possibilities. I can not get that shut down. I have even added the numbers they call to my "contact" info so that I can block them, but they just keep using different numbers.

I'm on the list here but still get tons of calls from people I never had any dealings with.  The new twist on it is they are spoofing caller id with local numbers to get you to pick up

The useless dead trees which keep showing up in the mailbox.

Did you forget about ordering trees?

TBH, I meant that as a kind of joke, but the reality is that often  the Arbor Day Foundation and a few more greeny type places send out dormant seedlings in the early spring and those are actual trees in a dormant state. If you were to do as they request and just find a blank area of soil and dump that dead stick into the ground almost anywhere, it will grow into a real tree.

You would be helping the earth to fight mankind's constant assault by just taking three minutes and burying that dead stick somewhere where a tree might grow.

Just some food for thought to chew on a bit.

Dead trees?  Go stick them in the ground somewhere.

Put that number in your contact folder and block it from calling you.  It works around here most of the time.

I actually have made a secondary folder for blocked numbers. I call that folder,  "SHIT."

We have a way to turn in those numbers, so every so often I just post all those numbers in my SHIT folder to the State Attorney General and they investigate and get those companies out of this state.

Don't really have room for another tree. Have three very large trees on average sized suburban lot; the yard is so shaded it's difficult to grow grass. Two are oaks in the back, and the largest would take two people to wrap arms around the trunk. Sometimes when it storms I wonder if it will ever kill me.

An oak will probably not kill you. Most especially one that is a couple of hundred years old. Not much can take that beast down.

As far those damned little sticks, I tried to be quiet, but go to a park and notice where they do not mow weeds and just use a trowel to "dump" those horrid dead sticks any where. You will become a part of "TeH Solution."

Actually in the deep south, southern live oaks are known to lay over from harsh winds; their root systems aren't deep like oaks in other areas of the country because they don't have to reach deep to get water. Though even a bolt of lightning dropping one of the major boughs would be nightmarish to the end of the house where the bedrooms are.

Though don't get me wrong; absolutely love my grand oak. It's the epitome of the south, enormously beautiful and dripping with Spanish moss. If it should ever kill me, there's worse ways to die.

The marketeers from abroad have different numbers all the time. Only seems to be the same number for a few hours. And they seem to come from everywhere around the world. Sometimes the accent matches the number. I did have a Norwegian telemarketeer twice. Don't remember what I had said to her the first time. The second time she gave me a "fuck off!", so I must have done something right.

Somebody really needs to invent a phone that allows you to reach through the screen and smash a broken beer bottle in the face of telemarketing shitheads. Ideally with an 'automatic' setting.

They used to call many times daily. Although of late, since I started being the one who usually ends up picking the phone up the spamwhoring calls seem to have dramatically dropped in number and frequency. Sometimes there'd be several calls within a few minutes. Those pricks are known to keep 'suckers lists' and trade such lists between their filthy little organizations.

I wonder if they also keep lists of those numbers that quite definitely won't buy from them.

I like to play along and tell them 'hey will you just hold on a minute while I look for my wallet/checkbook/card etc. will you hold the line' and then walk off and leave them hanging, waiting for a payment that will never come, whilst they bleed money to pay for the phonecall, eventually coming back, telling them exactly what I just did, before telling them to go get raped, drink bleach and die of cancer. If I'm feeling particularly friendly towards them that day and decide to be nice about it with them.

They really do not want to try for 'not nice' or catch me in a shitty mood with them.  I have to confess, I've said some rather awful things to telemarketers, and a fair few times have quite obviously scared the living piss out of the buggers. There've been a few times I could almost HEAR them turning pale and shaky.

Lestat, don't know how it is in the UK, but having a job as telemarketer is a very shitty job. Underpaid, minimum wage or less, most people they call will be kind of aggressive in answering. The only reason most telemarketers have that job is because the need the money to feed their kids or pay their student costs.

Yes, I dislike them calling me, but I will not be nasty as long as they are polite. I will now and then play games with them though. That can be fun.
And the "windows" or other aggro callers I will treat less decent.  The really aggressive ones always call from abroad.

Right about live oaks.
First time I showed my yankee wife a large Texas, growing near the Brazos, live oak tree she was astounded. They can easily dwarf many northern oak and maple trees four times taller by the sheer massiveness of their mass, so to speak.  "Why is it so wide?"  Well they do not have to compete for sunlight like so many things in the weak sunlight of the north.

One large branch falling would be devastating. True again.

Where I grew up, though, lightning almost never hit the live oaks. It always hit the palm trees which were twice as tall or overpass bridges. NO harm to the bridges; they can take it over and over for decades, but the palm trees usually make a horrible mess as they explode into baseball bat size shards from the strike.

We have live oaks in California too.

I think they only go as far north as a couple hours north of the Bay area.

There seems to be a lot of old live oaks around here; maybe because they're protected so construction takes place around them. When first married, used to live near the seven sisters tree. Wasn't impressed by it because it looked like a clump of trees that had grown together, rather than a single tree. Some of them in there area here look like that too, so not really sure if that's what they sometimes do, if they're really one tree or were originally multiple trees. Mine is obviously one tree.

SO where do you live. Hell, half the time I talk about live oaks (one of the most majestic and massive trees on the planet) and everyone just makes the joke about, since there are so many live oaks show me the dead oaks, bullshit. Most people do not even know what a live oak is.

... and yet, you brought it up. I salute you.

As far as the clumps of trees thing, many are. Remember how they propagate. They drop acorns and the squirrels find them and bury them in the ground for later, then forget about where they were buried and in two years or so the double dormant acorns sprout.
Many acorns in close proximity will develop into a single, very majestic tree cluster sometimes.  Seen it a lot in central Texas.

During that time, peoples' names and avatars were being changed from "on high" for the pursuit of comedic content.

Make this illegal: Non-descriptive reviews e.g. "I've only just got this and can't review yet", "It's great", "I bought this as a present for someone and they said they loved it". Regarding the last review, they're not likely to say they didn't like the present.

Or when asking questions about a product and someone else answers, "Oh I don't know, sorry" or "I don't know, ask the manufacturers" or "I think it could be whatever made up answer but I have no idea and that's a totally random guess".
