And wikipedia is on that matter, not incorrect. Not so sure about art, not that much of an  type. AUtistic, yes, but not much cop with a paint brush.

Whilst I've not the last reagent needed for the very final step, not actually here, there is something......gestating.  And I shall definitely be borrowing on its potential to enliven and lend some sparkle to
a long, long forest-y hike once its finally been born.

Who'da thunk it, I'm applying for a post in obstetrics.

I think it is. The artist is Jason Hackenwerth and he does all sorts of weird and amoebalike creatures.

Haha fuck me, I must be getting old. I hadn't even REALIZED it was my birthday until I read this thread. Was debating on whether or not to make with the chemistry, but now, definitely about to get right to it.

Got something a wee bit naughty in mind too *grins*
After that is, I've smoked a cigar and taken down a few notes on something needed for the chemistry bit. As it happened my old man had forgotten too, unusually for him. But I jokingly remarked that since it had completely escaped my mind that today was my b/day Ren, that I must be going senile in my old age, it reminded him.

So thanks again, hopefully I'll either get something for the lab (I'd hope for a new, better vacuum pump since he knows I've been having issues with the one I have of late) or money, which of course, can go to exactly the same purpose(s), upgrading the facilities.

And hyke, it works. Looks like a massively oversized group of the sporangia (ascospore-producing organs) from a germinated ergot (Claviceps purpurea and related species like C.paspali) sclerotium, the parasitic fungus that produces precursors to LSD.


And ren...young un? you can't say that when you are one yourself. Only old farts get to call young people 'young 'un', and you could easily pass for 18-20 (and a damn fine 18-20 too if I may say so)

No, I haven't missed it, my b/day is today.

And don't worry, I'm wearing goggles and a full face shield. Especially since what is planned for my little...birthday treat, so to speak, is going to involve a reduction using sodium metal in dried, boiling hot alcohol. And I'll have to open up a 100g block of the Na (a chunk about the size of a fist)


Later observation from a moment ago-needed my pain meds, and looked in the wrong med bag, an old one. Found 40 oxy pills (a strong opiate painkiller) that must have been from last week or the week before. No idea I had those. Since they were surplus to requirements medically speaking, just treated myself to a large shot of the stuff, a strong tranq and a dose of an enzyme inhibitor to prolong and intensify its action and duration, grabbing a couple of frosty beers from the fridge on my way out whilst the adduct compound with one of the main (harmless, but not wanted in there since it will interfere with my synthesis, and the thing which the adduct is made from is recoverable and indeed after recovery by treatment with strong base, and purification by distillation of the impurity (it counts as an impurity only because it isn't meant to be there. Its rubbish in a specific context only, but once purified, useful once again. A leftover from the first step of the synthesis of one of the main reagents used, so one that may as well be had back once removed and saved as leftover-grade (the original reagent I forked out for ACS grade stuff [american chemical society] certified, and of excellent quality. A step below analytical reference sample grade, for calibration of extremely sensitive equipment such as NMR machines, mass spectrometers and the like, but for synthetic procedures, those are not needed and are extremely expensive. ACS grade is excellent quality and this would be suitable for medicinal applications IMO. Perhaps big pharma might have better, but not as if they would NEED it to produce something perfectly acceptable. And nobody uses analar-grade stuff except for analyses generally, or for demanding things like semiconductor fabrication (for that particular application as close to atomic precision as possible is sought for and the work done in clean-rooms without so much as a speck of dust allowed to settle on things like silicon wafers for CPUs and other ICs)

So this won't be returned to my bottles of what the adduct is of,  but marked down as seconds if that makes sense, but re-used when sufficient is accumulated.

And my b/day is the 29th, wolfy, may his soul find peace and Raxy comfort, started the thread a day beforehand, like the damn good guy he is.

Oh now I am fucking FUMING. No, way, way way beyond pissed the fucking hell off.

Turns out my shit for brains father, just mindlessly dumped a couple of hundred quid's worth of a chemical I'd taken considerable care to prepare. Or rather that once finished with would be worth that. Right now I could stamp on his fucking head I am that fucking furious. Like a moron. Obviously not rubbish, by a flask sitting in a water bath. And meant to be for my b/day celebrations. Now I'm left with what I have of the intermediate compound I needed it to make, vac distilled and ready for use, but a measly couple of ml. All in all, a month of work down the shitter. More, including the time taken for it to crystallize and freeze out.

About to make the best of what I've got, not much but should be able to get something of what I intended out  of something not lost. Just got to carefully weigh it, have cleaned out my hotplate/stirrer's innards and, well, about to get to it. Nobody keeps this autie chemist down. And when that's done, I'll redo everything. Giving up ain't in my nature.

And....you betcha, I didn't pack it all in and say fuck it. I'm HAVING my b/day project work for me, even if it is belated due to practical reasons (I.e not shortcutting in a hurry, and making do with poor results, but being cold, patient, measured and methodical in my approach, and industrious with my efforts, with a vacuum still here, a blowtorch there, a bit of welding somewhere else....boiling and refining and distilling and washing away, and diving into the established and underground type literature sources that relate to the area of chemistry in particular or related topics of use that I can build on and learn from both. Its tempting of course, but the key is not to give in to it and to keep going, as surely as an oncoming tank, but to keep the subtleties of the art where they must be, despite being dogged and bloody minded as only an autie with a special interest-related goal in mind being bent to their will for something special can get:))

And the fruit is visible on the tree, so to speak. Just waiting to be given the right polishing before that final pluck, twist off a ripe juicy apple and crunch in to it with unrestrained gleeful stimmy as hell capering and cackling that would doubtless get a shrink called were anybody not on the spectrum to ever witness it. A mad scientist finally getting to let the mad side loose and out the hell to play Don't like spazzes? then get the fuck outa the nuthouse motherfuckers or you'll catch a stereotypy of some sort in the nose :autism: :autism:

I must confess, this particular bit, working with small weights of compounds with some rather tricky physical handling characteristics, thats notoriously tricky to purify, in much greater solvent volumes, it is not easy. Demanding a great delicacy of touch, to get my project to behave as it must learn that it better had do for the birthdayspazz. But mo chemical prissy-little-bitch-ery is going to get in my way. And its showing its face already. Its not a difficult reaction as such, its more the physical texture type qualities of the stuff. Not going to burst into flames on contact with air, insoluble in water, but very, very viscous, and adheres to glassware in part whilst other parts stay finely divided yet oiled out as a suspension in the water, making it hard to get out. But in this case whilst it has a very strong tendency towards oiling out, rather than crystallizing, a crystalline product isn't needed, a clean one is but it does not need to be solid in order to be employed as desired. It can curl up into a ball and whine all it damn well wants, but its GOING to do what I want it to, whether it wants to or not. Although if anybody pours this down the sink. They die. Horribly. Not because of it. Because of the really, really pissed off autie that would be coming after the offender and chasing them to the gates of hell itself if needs be to suck it out of their brain with a vacuum cleaner and a blender if must :P

And yes, they'd be alive whilst I did it. Slowly.  As long as I could keep them alive and conscious whilst removing their brain and eyes in piecemeal fashion and having replaced their skin with a coat of superglue to hold the juices in. No, nobody better be doing THAT again, not if they want to live to see another day watching grisly horror films from this side of the TV screen :heisenberg:
