By closing the site they are cutting off the only source of meaningful human contact for some. Sure, it is their site, but it means a lot to a lot of people. Some degree of responsibility is taken on because of this whether they like it or not.

This is exactly what I thought. Even though I know nothing about the site, I wondered how if they were genuine about supporting Autism, wouldn't they realise how distressing being cut off would be for those who use ithe site as a major source of interaction.

Last time it was 10 eople banned and about I dunno,,,,40 others left. It was more active than now and suddenly about 50 of the 60 people deserted or were banned. Massive rewrites then too.
That was just after Amy had come back.
The time before that, there was a similar debacle with a AFF member called Natalia. Again Amy.
Every time she comes back it falls in to a big pile of shit and she has to "edit" things to make herself not look like a complete powertripping control freak.
Personally I think she has some decent psychological problems and of a psychotic rather than a neurotic variety.

I have come to believe that they actually don't understand how upsetting this is. As I mentioned on deviantArt, this is extremely harmful to an online community. I assure you, and anyone lurking, that my intent was not, and has not become, to troll Amy or Gareth. I am still quite upset about being booted, and I feel that the reason is because I do not have some sort of Amy-approved specific purpose in showing up. I wanted to say hi to Some_Bloke. The minute I say that I miss my friends from AFF, I'm kicked out of the chat. I am not going to lie and say that I have no interest in staying in contact with the people I met over there.

If the forum is brought back, Nu, then one thing that needs to change is the level of tolerance for people who only go there to play devil's advocate at any chance they get. These few individuals have a detrimental effect on the overall atmosphere. Those sorts of people would be fine here, as people would be able to flame the shit out of them, but on a moderated forum, it just gets annouing. A few names come to mind. I can't say for sure if there are about six of them or not. Actually, it might be three. Hell, I could just be imagining things, and there are none of them. Zero. Alternatively spoken as "oh".

There was no controversy this time. We're all in agreement that bloke's a good guy who shouldn't have been banned. We certainly don't think the forum should have been shut down.

I have on occasion thought about what would happen here if I was struck by a car one day. Not that I'm important; I'm not, but the fact is that I pay for the hosting and the domain name, which means that if I disappear it would be hard for anyone to take over the place.
If I leave this place voluntarily, I know I'll hand it over to someone before I leave and hope they'll do the same, eventually. It's the decent thing to do. But people disappear all the time. Callaway, for one, and I really miss her, and I'm worried about her.
So, what to do?

If any of us would get to know you were struck by that car, there would at least be the option to prepare for a moving out or so.
The way Amy and Gareth control everything, while claiming to be a community, is what makes it extra sore. They keep members from getting contact details of people they love to talk to.
It says something about the power of that community that AFF bounced back into shape after every massive meltdown it had. Gareth and Amy should have handed it over to someone else indeed, if they even remotely meant that the community they provided space for meant something.

The amount of shit I've put up with for those guys, not the least of it here, you'd think they'd give me enough respect to at least explain it to me or...but no. I just get told that they're sick of the drama and that they've received death threats.
Well so did I when I was running AFF, and one of them had my address and real name on. Nobody who was questioning the decision to ban Bloke would have made such a threat to them, so if the threat happened it came from somebody like MadMick.
I still consider Gareth my friend, but I am bitter as fuck over this, and even though we're still talking off-forum and off-IRC, I think I've made it clear that I feel extremely betrayed. I put my all into the running of that forum, and in return I've been treated like shit.
On the other hand, people do live, after a forum stops to exist. And, we would notice you being gone for an extended time. I guess Parts would realise then that making a good back-up, and forming a back-up plan would be wise.
Best of all, just keep yourself and your jag healthy.

The amount of shit I've put up with for those guys, not the least of it here, you'd think they'd give me enough respect to at least explain it to me or...but no. I just get told that they're sick of the drama and that they've received death threats.
Well so did I when I was running AFF, and one of them had my address and real name on. Nobody who was questioning the decision to ban Bloke would have made such a threat to them, so if the threat happened it came from somebody like MadMick.
I still consider Gareth my friend, but I am bitter as fuck over this, and even though we're still talking off-forum and off-IRC, I think I've made it clear that I feel extremely betrayed. I put my all into the running of that forum, and in return I've been treated like shit.
On the other hand, people do live, after a forum stops to exist. And, we would notice you being gone for an extended time. I guess Parts would realise then that making a good back-up, and forming a back-up plan would be wise.

Approximately correct, except it was my impression that the forum was shut down after step three, then the rest of the drama ensued. Including, bizarrely, the banning of more users. I'm convinced that this was all trolling on the part of Amy and Gareth. This kind of behavior is ridiculous.

They got it into their paranoid conspiracy theory.....that someone was trying to buy the site and so they tried to be spiteful and not sell and not bring it up.
The truth is that when it suddenly was pulled down, many people wanted it ....not to be pulled down, I guess. They were saying we want it up and it ought not be down and if i is really such a hassle to them that they HAVE to take it down and disrupt a membership....we will be happy to buy it because the thing that actually matters to us is that it is up and we can hangout together.
But to them it is one big conspiracy. People disagreeing with Amy is not people disagreeing. It is a conspiracy, with evil motives, and hostile intent.
Take down the forum without notice and then she is surprised that refugees ought to take umbrage of it. Then it is them being nasty and unreasonable.
Being that they congregate rather than mindlessly hover about in turmoil, they are obviously part of a sophisticated crack squad of trolls.
In fact it was a tightly orchestrated attack on AFF and they made her take it down because they wanted it bought so she will not cave to pressure or against the conspiracy crack troll squad of forum buyers....

If the AFF forum really was run by histrionic capricious cunts as has been alleged here I have no idea why anyone would want to go back there again for more of the same but I suppose it is a better deal than paying a mistress $150 a half hour to be abused. :dunno: If the worst that happens in a person's life in 2013 is having a favorite forum shut down, versus say a death in the family or the dog dies, than that would not seem like such a horrid year from my perspective. There are a few people here that I am not already in touch with elsewhere that I would want to stay in touch with but overall my life would not go to shit if I2 ceased to exist. YMMV.

Well it was nice while it lasted, for the most part. This statement of mine isn't going to be particularly long, i'll just get to the point:
I would LOVE to bring the forum back up and to somehow have things back the way they were. That was my original intent in bringing it down only temporarily for 24 hours. As things are however, with every single thing I do or say being interpreted in the most negative way possible (i'd give examples but then people reading this will dwell on specifics instead of getting the general point) I don't think that's possible, and that absolutely kills me.
It would take about 2 minutes to switch the forum software back on, it's still there - all that's changed is the database config has been altered so that it's spouting error messages instead of anything else. But imagine what would happen if I did. First of all, the same old protests about banning "you know who" would return (despite the repeated warnings about personal attacks he was given - and his ignoring of those warnings), and secondly a lot of the lies being spread around would remain. People who were previously nice and friendly would just use the place as a platform for flaming, or would only use the place to gather old PMs before leaving. The former is of course a big problem, and the latter means that the community is going to be permanently fragmented either way.
So in summary: i'd love for things to go back to how they were, that's what I originally intended but it's not going to happen and it seems a lot of regulars don't want it to happen anyway. One thing I will ask though, for those with some decency: lay off the attacks against me and Amy and go and do your own thing. Stop all the talk about "justice" and let us both live our lives in peace. Attacking fellow autistics who have only tried to help for the better part of a decade is not going to help anyone. Please just have some decency and go and build your own thing. After all that's how AFF started - we built our own thing when aspergia went down all those years ago.

I don't know about what he says. I am just telling you the reasons I was given when I asked initially why it went down. All this death threat stalking nonsense came days later (after it was already made clear AFF was down permanently). We actually cared about Gareth, but he showed he didn't care about us, that's what got people hurt and pissed (not to mentions all the accusations Amy and her croonies were throwing around).

Fair comment. There has been far too much drama and butthurt about this, on that point we are in complete agreement. As far as I know someone may indeed have taken things too far. Judging by the depth of resentment I've seen it is a sad possibility.

So AFF is gone thanks to an asshole misleading everyone and causing them to attack me and Amy as if we're the scum of the earth.
Apparently i'm a "sadistic little twerp" according to one old regular - why did they say this? Because I closed a forum, offered to forward email addresses legally (i.e without breaking the data protection act) and generally was too nice.
Someone stated that the current message on the site ("Please note - the forum is closed and will NOT going back up, it is not for sale to anyone and nobody is taking over") means that I hold the old userbase in contempt.

Bloke aka rossco aka al swearengen (what kind of name is that anyway?) is the most at fault here - after banning him for refusing to accept warnings for personal attacks he started manipulating everyone else and winding them up. His response to the warnings was that he didn't accept them (in a weird kind of "I don't recognize your authority" type way - not the best response).
He's also utterly paranoid and said the site was down so we could edit all his posts to make him look bad, and lots of people just blindly believed this despite the utter insanity and paranoia.

I would just like to point out that neither you nor the Nelsons would be the only ones ever to experience trauma. If this pattern of theirs is indeed a response to trauma, and I'm willing to consider it may be, then there is still a problem. If they are trying to heal, then whatever they are doing towards that end is not working. This patten goes back for years. It's time for them to try something different. And I really don't believe that being the victim of trauma absolves you of responsibility for your behavior. They broke communication between autistics, who already find it difficult to build and maintain relationships. That is an extremely nasty way of lashing out at other people for what you've been through, even if you took the initiative for providing the means of communication in the first place. Of the attempts to reestablish contact, they deliberately worked to break the ones they had under their control. Of course he's going to try and seem reasonable by saying, "Go ahead, build another forum." He has no means whatsoever of stopping us from doing so. Whenever we go to the place on the internet where we all met, we still can't talk to each other to get back in touch. He tried to turn S_B against us. He attacked d_olson for emailing people who had specifically opted in to receiving emails. He might be genuinely hurt, but that doesn't excuse him from taking it out on other people. That sort of behavior is still wrong.
Now, maybe their closing of the forum permanently is a beginning of the end. Who knows. If they're hurting, I do hope they improve, but that doesn't mean I don't get to be angry, or that they should not be held accountable for their actions.

I do think that the decision of some people to completely pile on against Amy is inappropriate, and a little bit anti-woman. Sort of an "Adam and Eve" blame the woman for everything that goes wrong kind of thing. They seemed quite in agreement when I went in the chat. Women are not to blame for the actions of men.
Truth is the reason for closing was petty and they know it. Petty and vindictive. They now try to put the repercussions of that choice as the cause of that choice instead of admitting they fucked up and are responsible for their own situation.

Is it possible that the truth is somewhere in the middle? That what we have is ten years of perceived or real bitching and at least some serious stalking, AND a case of being human and having enough, and reacting like a human, full of flaws?
Not saying vindictiveness can't be a part of it. Of course it can. But I don't think any of this happened in a vacuum, isolated. To me it sounds as if it all added up and finally it all came down crashing.

I decided to check out AFF and was surprised to see it down. Did a little googling and someone on the wrongplanet forum mentioned I2 and here I am. I was a member on AFF a looooong time ago, so long ago I can't even remember my username. I'm not really much of a forum person, much prefer real time chat (irc or voice chat).
I2 was never mentioned in #chatautism from my recollection.
