Title: The EASTER thread.
Post by: Postperson on April 12, 2006, 09:38:39 PM
Well, (in case the heathens amongst you don't know) this is the time of year when our boy was tried, fried, crucified and ROSE AGAIN. For those who never read books it was rather poorly depicted in Mel Gibson's catholic extravaganza The Passion.

so...I'm not sure how I will be remembering this solemn event, I tend to do what I feel like on the day/s.

What about you lot.... buying easter eggs and going away for a few days?

What are your holyday plans?

Living in a seaside/tourist/retirement town as I do, this is one of the busiest weekends of the year. We get swarms of tourists down here, they have 'collectors fairs' and antique car shows and junk like that. All the fun of the fair. What goes on in your town? Any classic Jesus movies on telly?

isn't that the inscription over jesus' head, on the cross?

i'll google it to be sure,  but its been years and years, though i grew up in a christian home.  went to a private christian school from 2nd grade thru high school (except junior year at public school.)

also read the entire bible numerous times (excluding numbers) and at one point had the entire book of 1st John, commited to memory.
this should be in the randome truth thread.

kinda sheds some light on me.

Well I just checked the tv guide for today (good friday), and they've scheduled a lotta blockbusters,

We got A Passage to India as the daytime movie, only 4 hours long with ads, but I haven't seen a Judy Davis movie for ages (seen it before, years ago), so I might have a look. I think it's kinda like the time I went to Vietnam, all heat and noise and people who stand too close to you.

Then at 8:30pm we got Gladiator on one channel andGenhis Khan on another, then finally at 10:30pm we got The Passion of the Christ

There's so much bullshit on this site today, I don't think I can cope with it. I've got enought bullshit going on IRL.

Hmmmm, here it's films films films so far.  No idea if that's going to continue.  Only saw one Jesus thing; some old 70's 'sand and sandals' movie that held my attention for a whole 5 seconds, but there was a 'Merlin's Apprentice' thing that was good.

A secular aspect of religion:  Peeps.

Where ma Peeps ate? (http://www.peepresearch.org/)  The poor bastards.

Oh, and you can make peeps battle one another!  Take two Peeps and stick a toothpick in each of their beaks, then you set them facing each other in the microwave, and start cooking them. The first Peep to poke the other Peep with his toothpick wins the Peep war, or, alternately, the first peep to explode loses.

Could they even show The Passion of the Christ on television? I'm surprised. I thought that on TV it would be butchered beyond all watchability.

The Ten Commandments was on TV tonight (or last night) where I live. I caught the last half hour.

oh? what was the 10 Commandments like? the bit you saw, anyway.

Here's the fuller online listing for The passion...I didn't even read it, I only saw it in the short guide format, so I didn't realise it was commercial free and uncut! That could be a first for Australian tv, or pretty rare for drama anyway. Not that I think it's a great movie. I was glad when it was over on DVD. I think I even fast forwarded some of it.

The Friday Movie
The Passion of the Christ
Commercial Free & Uncut
9.40pm - 11.55pm Seven
Friday 14 April 2006
Australia's Mel Gibson directs this controversial film about the last 12 hours of Jesus of Nazareth's life, from the temptation by Satan and betrayal by Judas Iscariot to his trial for blasphemy and condemnation to death. Jesus is brought before Pilate, the Roman governor of Palestine, who listens to the accusations against him. Pilate gives the crowd a choice between setting free Jesus or the criminal, Barabbas, and they condemn Jesus. He is given a cross to carry through the streets of Jerusalem to Golgotha where he suffers his last temptation, the fear that his heavenly father has abandoned him.

Easter is the day that Jesus rose from the dead after being buried on Good Friday.  On Easter Sunday, he was resurrected, meaning that he had died and came back to life.  Jesus died for our sins, for the good of mankind, he made the ultimate sacrifice to atone for our sins.

But wait, he sacrificed his life by dying, then coming back to life 2 days later?  Basically what this means is that the big "ultimate sacrifice" that he made was a crappy weekend.  Usually when someone sacrifices their life, they're giving up on their existence, but not Jesus, when he makes the ultimate sacrifice, he dies and then just jumps back to life like nothing ever happened.  This makes me wonder how much of a sacrifice it really was.  He died, which I would assume meant he went to heaven spiritually, then he came back 2 days later to retrieve his body "I left a few things back at my old place, I'll swing by there on the way to the bar".

I've often wondered if it was more that after 2 days of hanging on a cross that he fell into a coma, and since nobody knew how to check a pulse back then, it was just assumed he was dead.  2 days later, he wakes up from the coma and everybody says it's a miracle.  They say that a giant boulder was rolled in front of his tomb to seal it off, and that it couldn't have been moved, how so?  If the boulder was put there by humans, it shouldn't be impossible for humans to roll it out of the way.  Was there a 24/7 guard on duty watching the boulder, or is it possible that maybe some of his followers went to the tomb late on Saturday night, rolled the boulder out of the way and took the body (dead or alive) leading to the idea that he just magically ascended?

Either way, thank you Jesus for making the ultimate sacrifice by having a bad weekend, we all gotta make sacrifices from time to time.  I was all set to move to California to start my life over from scratch and try to make a better life for myself, but I opted to stay where I am because my grandmother's condition is getting worse by the month and my family needs the emotional support.  I gave up on a dream I've had for years to try and make something of myself, but I sacrificed my ability to move to California before I turn 30 for the good of my family.  This sacrifice that could affect the rest of my life is apparently nothing compared to the supreme sacrifice that the messiah made by having a crappy weekend of having to hang out at his father's place for a few days until he could go back and get the rest of his shit.

This is one of the holiest Christian holidays, the death and resurrection of their savior.  The savior was killed by the "dirty jews" (of which he was one), only to come back from the dead 2 days later.  The Christians celebrate this death and resurrection in the most logical way, by telling their children that a giant bunny-rabbit laid multicolored plastic eggs full of candy throughout the yard sometime late at night.  And to this day, the logo of Christianity remains as the device used to kill the savior, not the crown of thorns he wore, not the cup of his blood that he gave to them, but the device used to kill him, that's what they use for a logo.  If he were stabbed, would there be a big knife hanging above the altar?  Would good Christian kids be getting kicked out of school because they wear a golden knife around their necks?  If he were shot, would Catholics say a prayer for each bullet of the rosary?

Send a piece of himself to hell, in order to actually experience some of the suffering he was putting people through.   The suffering made it possible for him to overlook the misgivings of humanity and allow them to be forgiven.   He felt their pain, so to speak.

The story will never truly make sense.   This is just one of the interpretations I have heard over the years.
Title: Re: The EASTER thread.
Post by: Alex179 on March 24, 2010, 10:06:09 PM
At the moment that Jesus was on the cross, all the sins of humanity (future, past and present) were counted upon him, that is why he was sent to hell.   Jesus basically paid the price for all of humanity's sins while in hell for 2 days.   That is some really concentrated suffering.   Lifetimes of sin, accounted for in 2 days of suffering.

And thy lord Yahweh did say on to Jesus "you're gonna go stay at your uncle Satan's house for a few days until this all blows over".  And with that Jesus was sent to hell to suffer for 2 days.  Satan said on to Jesus "Hah, I know you were looking forward to coming here so you can drink my Petron, but I have news for you, you're gonna have to settle for 1800, but look on the bright side, the mortals get punished with Jose Cuervo."

Okay, I lose two days pay to celebrate a Judeo-Christian celebration. I am neither Jewish nor Christian, but all good. I would rather work but I literally can't. So I do not go to church. What do I do instead? I give an egg to my daughter. An egg. I remember Christ was on the cross holding an Easter Egg that the Easter bunny gave to him...

No, wait a moment....THAT is not the Judeo-Christian celebration we are celebrating. The Egg and the Bunny are remnants of a lost Pagan celebration which is not in any way part of the biblical mythology or narrative. It is lost in history what the Hell we are trying to celebrate. I trust vaguely that it is somehow a renewal thing based on the seasons that are in opposition to the ones we have in our Hemisphere.

Christianity adopted THIS Tradition as they did others like Valentines Day. Most of the various Saints are other religions Gods and worshipped figures that they "amalgamated". St Nicholaus? Part elf/part Winter Spirit/part Saint Nicolaus/Part 1930's Coca Cola Commercialised figure with red clothes and white hair and beard. hardly about a messiah being born.

Truth is that the dates of Jesus's death and birth were not even correct but were changes to accommodate these existing celebrations that they are celebrating.

Yet we take time off we do not want to take, We are not paid and have to buy crap based on a myth that we know is contrived and commercialised and that we don't believe in but that we pretend we both do believe and like. Its all a fat pile of crap.

Oh yes. Bah humbug

They were wrong. The earth could well be round and yet quite flat, but I think we all suspect with a debatable degree of surety in this day and age that the earth is somewhat spheroid.

Yeah and that is why Australia and the rest of the southern hemisphere should have their own unique set of holidays. Or at least move the Christian ones to the other side of the year. It's not like Jesus was born in December anyway.

What's your growing season? Is there a specific time of renewal that would actually make sense?

Agreed. Seasonal celebrations have been part of cultures with clear seasons for a very long time.
I'm in favour of keeping them, but then I am a rural girl. For people in an inner city area those feasts may mean nothing.

For me Easter was one of the best celebrations. For weeks working on building the best Easter pile and then having a massive bonfire on Easter Monday. Stollen for breakfast, fire in the evening and in the particular area I used to live, the liberty to smear people's faces with soot.

Fire, to becon the sun to grow strong and warm the fields. Rubbish chanched into fertile ashes.

Somehow our chickens always took a break from laying eggs, before Easter.  :lol1:

I hate Easter. I just hate it

Oh yes. Bah humbug

But, but, but ... the candy!  :chocolate:  :'(

Drove past this house the other day...enough plastic eggs and inflatable bunnies to choke a horse.

Rounded the corner...and bam....the boy and I just stopped and said WTF "these people obviously have too much time on their hands".

Christa and Volker Kraft from Saalfeld Germany began decorating their apple tree for easter in 1965. Their tradition grew along with the tree, to decorating it with more than 10,000 eggs, and it became a tourist attraction drawing thousands of people each year. 2015 was the last year for the Easter tree, but here's some pictures of it in all its glory.

Yeah, I agree. I totally get it that they're probably too old to be spending weeks up on a ladder to do all that work, but if it was such a great thing to their community then I'm surprised someone didn't take it over for them.  :dunno:

The article I linked says they kept them in their garage.  :orly: It also said a lot of them were real eggs, which were eaten by local children.

Earlier this year in January, hundreds of thousands of toy filled eggs washed up on the island shores of Langeoog Germany, after a cargo ship lost containers during a storm. The eggs were collected to protect the environment and the local children were happy to help with the clean up efforts.

I'm not all that nice mama.  The money for holiday presents comes out of her check unless the present comes from the thrift store.  Then I can afford to pay.

Luckily The PR isn't much for candy.  She prefers cookies, ice cream and cake.

I recently bought my daughter a "Jello Bean"  mold.  She is into making gummy (horrid) things out of perfectly good Jello. This mold makes one hundred dreaded little ballls of horror.  She loves it!

Now she can make bite sized pieces of too hard to chew Jello stuff.
I think Jello should be edible, not turned into gummy things.

What are you talking about? Almost every store around here was open yesterday. Only some of the large corporate stores like Best Buy were closed. Walmart and Lowe's were open, as was Target. (There was a news broadcast telling what places were open for business)

I can not think of a single local "mom and pop" restaurant that was closed. Most were open with reservations and waiting lines, especially the small brewery bars.

While this past may have been a very religious holiday in the past, I think I can see that the Christians are being replaced by some "morning" Christians and many who just do not give a fuck anymore.
