WTF were you thinking? A PM to any one of us in the staff would have been enough: guys, please, I don't want to be a newsbox slave anymore, take the stars away from me, I don't want to do it. Or just post it without talking about the pretty colours of your stars, just fucking say so, anything that isn't construed to be ambivalent, and you are not a newsbox slave any more.
But no, you had to post porn visible to anyone, you had to expose the whole site and make us a target to anyone and to our host in particular, because the only reason we can post anything beyond what WP is pouring out is because we have an adults only policy that we enforce as rigidly as we can.
That is thrown out of the fucking window as soon as someone posts porn or ANYTHING requiring that 18-yo limit visible to a non-member. Can't you see that? Can't you see that even when the stuff we post is formally legal, the only reason we can do it without causing too much fuss is that we fly under the fucking radar?

Personally, I think the stuff you had up there was indeed mild. It was done in good humour, yes, and I understand why you did it. Problem is, what I think won't count if our host has a look and decides it's easier to shut us down (because they can do that, it's right there in the TOS) than try to settle things with someone who is pissed off and pays fifty times the amount I pay each month. I don't mind the money, Bint, I never did, but I do want to keep us online. To do that, I follow a few very simple rules, one of which is that I make sure we keep a low profile to the outside world, simply because that way we don't ever have to be scrutinised.
Rules are always easier if you don't make a lot of exceptions because once you start doing that, it becomes harder to enforce anything without someone screaming how UNFAIR it all is and how what we denied now was allowed last month, and what a despot I am, and all that shit and drama some people are so fond of.
See, the rules are only designed to do one thing, one thing only, and that is to ensure that this place stays online.

What I still don't understand is why do you think a bit of porn would get us shut down? Surely the agreement you have with our host states that we can have porn. Also I think we'd all benefit if you would post the TOS for us all to see again.
I would understand all the secrecy and worry if we had a paedophilic forum or one which worshipped Hitler and had us making plans for another mass extermination BUT all we have is a forum for autistic people that sometimes write about controversial things and post the odd porn film or pic.

The ex has his own computer company so this is what we do day to day and I can back Odeon up on what he's saying. I know he doesn't need me too, but being in this business for 10+ years I know what he's getting at.

The ex has his own computer company so this is what we do day to day and I can back Odeon up on what he's saying. I know he doesn't need me too, but being in this business for 10+ years I know what he's getting at.
Carry on.
It doesn't take too much to restore the site from a backup, elsewhere either. Antagonising the membership with this callout does nothing to protect this site. If Odeon dealt with this in a more adult fashion (anyone thought of PM's - asides Camilla did hint rather strongly she did not want to be doing the newsbox etc...), the risk to the site would be greatly reduced.

It doesn't really strike me as unreasonable that Odeon is pissed off.
I have seen it happen on other forums and it is a pain in the arse for the forum owner to then make a case to a forum host to allow him to keep his site and no-one but him will be allowed to be a part in the process. The will scrutinise the sites entirety and judge it one way or another and he would have to really go through a lot of unnecessary sycophantic begging and scraping - IF he can be bothered and IF they do end up NOT deciding it is not too much bother to keep the site.
Call him overly cautious or butthurt or whatever but what he is saying is dead to right.
He pays for the site and he will personally cop it if crap goes down. Us? Will will be inconvenienced if the site goes down and we then blame who?
I suspect we would all be blaming....Odeon for not getting the site back up.
Hadron carping on about all manner of weird shit is expected and I suspect would have had equal backing if Pyraxis was here because they like to take a contrary point of view.
It is pretty easy though and we enjoy this site and want it to enjoy and if that means posting the occasion porn where only trusted members can see it and otherwise leaving the rest of the board free only to non-porn it doesn't seem unreasonable.
If Odeon did not have these restrictions forced on his site because of the TOS he probably would not have said anything. I don't think he is prudish (or has ever struck me as so).
I think this site is unmoderated and free enough and have only been on a couple of sites with looser moderation and believe me they have a lot harder time in keeping their sites up. One of them is after a hell of a lot of investigation on their third host in 12 months for precisely this kind of thing and even AFF was bought down by Timelord after he merely insinuated irrelevant crap.

For what it is worth. I am not saying you are a bad person. Nor am I saying you are stupid for what you did. I think in this instance you were ignorant of the TOS and did something for laughs or whatever and did not think to consider maybe it may impact on TOS.
I am sure Odeon knows the TOS inside out and most of us don't. You may not have understood the implications and others may not. Having said this. If he does know them well and we don't then arguing with him about them seems as rational as arguing in other field or discipline of knowledge where you are short of facts and up against someone who knows them inside out. Just seems to set up a a big FAIL.
I kinda think Odeon did the board a favour in point it out. I think most of us want the site running.

Most of us don't know the boundaries of what we are and are not allowed. Odeon does and pointed it out in this thread. I commented this exact thing earlier.
Yes we doesn't know when hostgator might lurk do we. We don't know what action they would take or when. If they did take action, what would Bint, you or I do (or be able to do) about it? It would be far more than lolz or an "Oooopppsss" moment and certainly much more for Odeon.

What I don't think people realize is that it takes nearly nothing to have the site shut down. It's shut down first, ask questions later, if they even bother to really ask or care. The ex has his own computer company so this is what we do day to day and I can back Odeon up on what he's saying. I know he doesn't need me too, but being in this business for 10+ years I know what he's getting at.

It doesn't take too much to restore the site from a backup, elsewhere either. Antagonising the membership with this callout does nothing to protect this site. If Odeon dealt with this in a more adult fashion (anyone thought of PM's - asides Camilla did hint rather strongly she did not want to be doing the newsbox etc...), the risk to the site would be greatly reduced.
Then what is the callout board for? It's for this purpose. Odeon had an issue, he called Bints out on it, she had a chance to respond. It doesn't put the site at risk. If anything, it probably helped the situation because if someone watching the server it's stored on flagged the site, they would see that the issue was dealt with.
of course you can restore from backups but why put us in that position to begin with? (not directing this specifically to Bints, I mean in general). What we have here works. There are few rules that are being asked of us. I don't see what the huge deal is to follow those rules.

The TOS is readily available at Hostgator's webpage and I've linked to it often enough, I feel. Google is your friend.
But this is not about the TOS, specifically, it's about staying below the radar because we don't want our host to scrutinise the whole site. There's enough shit in here to cause us problems, in spite of it all being perfectly within the TOS. Hosts have been known to shut down inconvenient sites BEFORE ever contacting the owner and Hostgator is not an exception in that respect. The reason I've elected to stay with them is that they are relatively liberal, their servers tend to stay online and be relatively fast, and they are not too expensive. Also, they do tolerate a lot of stuff others won't.
I2 started elsewhere, you know, but was forced to move because the original host didn't allow porn.
I don't want you to leave, Bint. I like reading your stuff and I2 wouldn't be the same without you. But ultimately it's your decision and if you want to leave because of all this, then so be it.

Good point. The answer is that Free for All was free for everyone, including non-members, before we were repeatedly attacked and we had to limit the availability of that forum to members. We've never considered opening up any part of the board for minors, however, so allowing them to register is out of the question.
