Title: OK I'll follow the trend... Question me if you want. I may answer.
Post by: 'andersom' on March 21, 2009, 10:38:52 AM
Lost enough of my shyness now to start an ask away thread.

So welcoming you to ask, and I may answer.

(I sound like a Pythia now  :P)

What do you think of I2 so far?

So far?

I really like I2.

The only problem is that it's very addictive.
But I would not want that to change.

I like the fact that Intensity is addictive. :)

What does your username mean?
When will you get an avatar?

Who are you? Tell us a bit about yourself...

 ;D

You ask the hard question,

Tell about myself....

I hoped a questionthread would make that easier,

but, no, the general question is here...  ;D

Well, that tells something already about me; not too good in answering general questions.

But I'm sure I'll be telling more about myself further in this thread. It will just take some time.

I entered the online world with the name Hyke about two years ago. Hykeaswell is derived from that. I came up with that name after I had hit my maximum posts on AFF a long time ago. (when I was still there). After that I noticed it had AS in the middle and well at the end. It was unintentional. But I like it.

Hyke is short for my actual name.

And it does have a meaning. It's an old germanic name. It means something like warrior, fighter. I did not chose it therefor though. It's my name.

Sad confession.....

I've not found out how to make one yet.
And am not focussed enough atm to find out about it.

I will one day I guess.

I've never had an avatar sofar.

It is about time that I change that.

Can't promise it will be within a week though.

What sort of avatar would you like? What would you want to represent you?

Maybe some of us can post avatars for you to pick from based on what you tell us you are into.

When I entered AFF I really did like it.
It was a site I stumbled upon looking for things like faceblindness, hypersensitivity etc.

It was a great source for me. It told me about autism.
And it was a lot better than other places I found about autism.

I saw some people with ways of thinking similar to mine.
And it made sense. Lot more sense than the psychologist I was sent to.
Met some very nice people there. And it was great.

Did help me to selfdiagnose.
Did help me to get my gp to refer me to the place I wanted to go.
And via that got an official diagnosis.

I've really liked AFF in the beginning. But that changed completely summer last year.
So I left in the big Exodus.

My last posts have been deleted there.

And I've tried three times to unsubscribe. Without success.

And yes, hykeaswell was my postlimit sockpuppet.

Long story,
long ago.
Past tense.

I would not be amazed if there's some thread about it here.

Walked out with the one I like best.
AFF has been pretty good for me.
But it's not my place anymore.

AFF are a bunch of elitist snobs anyway, if I had to choose between WP or AFF for faggotry exposure, I'd choose WP.

Yep I looked at DV.
I am curious. And I do check on an invitation.
I won't come over though.

And no, I do not live near Utrecht. I see different locations when I stumble on things that find out where I am. So far they all placed me in the Netherlands, but not close to where I live. (Not close for Dutch ideas of distance that is, this is quite a small country. Someone from a much bigger country might consider Utrecht to be close to me)

You don't need to speak german to be understood here. Most Dutch do speak english too. And there are more that speak english than german. English is a subject from grade 7 on in primary schools now. And obligatory on all secondary schools.

And be assured, in every coffeeshop they do understand english and german. Tourists are a great source of income. So, only the ticket costs are valid in keeping you from visiting.

If you ever do, ask around for the local legislation about smoking weed. It differs per town.

Lol. You are truely from the USA aren't you?

If you were in Africa, the Netherlands would indeed be somewhere on the other side of Italy...

And Holland, well there are two, north and south. Both are part of the Netherlands, in the west. I do not live in Holland.

Turnips are so popular here, that loads of people have never eaten them, and don't even know what a turnip is.
The most common surname here is 'de Vries'. But Jan Jansen sounds better if you want to make a persiflage.
And raw fish; only the herring. And the sour version I find delicious indeed. The salted one is not of my liking.

Ooops... Try Van Gogh and Rembrand when it comes to dutch artists. And Hieronimus Bosch.

The Netherlands is a small country indeed. It lies west of Germany and north of Belgium. To the north and west of the Netherlands lies the Northsea. And if you cross the Northsea to the west, you'll arive in Great Brittain.

Not meant to say you are stupid. But it is funny how I had to learn the states of the USA at primary school. And people from the USA don't seem to get a lot of education on the countries in Europe.

It shows you are from the USA, because it shows the (lack of) education about nations outside your country. It says nothing about you being stupid.

I'm raised in drents and dutch. And now live where they speak dutch according to the map. But that only means that it is new land. With people inhabiting it from all provinces of the Netherlands. And thus having all dialects here. And slowly they intermingle into a new dialect.

Thanks, its tough to learn to speak fluent dutch. Whenever I would speak dutch, everyone would speak english back to me :)

Bedoel je thuis, of toen je hier in Nederland was. (Nederlanders hebben daar nog al een handje van, engels spreken tegen iemand die een accent heeft)

no I mean over here in texas, they always say back to me      "What the hell did you just say??? and why did you just growl at me? is there some flem in your throat or something? "

:)

dont think Ill ever be able to hide my accent, I gotta smoke a pack of ciggarettes in a row to master that "GGGGGGGGGGGrrGGGRggGG" I even tried my hardest when just ordering one patat met and only saying one sentence, and she still spoke english back. Epic fail.

LOL, can you manage the "ui"? The next hard thing to do, besides the "G".

40% of our country is below sealevel. Including the biggest cities. And the oldest polders (land needing constant draining) are from centuries ago. 14th century at least.
I guess it sounds dangerous to you,

JustGiveIn fooled me Reneaden. He knows a lot about the Netherlands, has been here more than once. He just acted to be like the stereotypical image we here have about Americans. And he did give a clue, with his Jan Jansen. But he fooled me brilliantly.

I think TheoK is referring to WWII here, when some dutch people ate tulip bulbs to keep themselves from starving.
They are said to taste absolutely horrible.

Googling on tulips and recepies I did find a recipe of filled tulipflowerheads though.

Still, what a waste to eat them,

They just look better in a field, garden or vase.

Bringing an arm full of tulips will work a lot better romantically than forcefeeding the bulbs.

* Image of Lit dancing through red tulip field, gathering flowers, now engraved in my mind, no red tulipfield will look the same anymore. And I only have a limited visual idea of Lit... *

They are beginning to bloom now, the tulip fields.

It's one piece of wood.

Got you some youtubes.

The really traditional way of making them, now only seen in musea, and on fairs aimed at tourists:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dt5BLJhiMO0

And a simple industrialised one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcCozSKSdCU

Hoped I could find pics of repaired clogs too, if the cap breaks off, it's easily fixed with some metal strips with pointy backs hammered unto them. A DIY job. Looks funny, but is worth it.

I like those videos.  :plus: One cool thing that strikes me about wood shoes is you can kick someone and it doesn't matter how you hold your feet just like with workboots. With barefeet or sneakers you can break a toe kicking someone wrong.

New year?

I'm not sure what I want.  Right now I'm in destroy-mode.

Maybe it is time to look at what you really don't want then. The things that are holding you back. You could use your destroy mode for that. Have a fair look at yourself. Look at all that is wrong, and be fair enough to see what is good too. And then make a fresh start.

Hard. Will go wrong a lot of times. But it's something you can do time and time again, and probably will need to do time and time again. And it will make you feel better, if you have a really honest look, not only seeing the bad or the good. But seeing it bothl. And use the destructiveness for making it better.

If you don't give yourself a fair new chance, no one will.

(Sorry CG, took over your Dear Abby task, will not do it again)

I stopped years ago, because of a pregnancy leave. And then I did not come back, life getting too complicated with a very depressed partner. By the time I wanted to get on with it, I took a job, to be able to pay the costs for finishing uni. And I just was not cut out to do that job. Massive burn-out. The good thing was that it made me find out about autism, and got me a dx. The bad thing, beside the burn-out and all that came with that, was that it delayed my studies even more.

Now I am going to find out this week if I will be allowed to finish it after all, or not. All kinds of complications playing a part in it. Mainly financial. And a possible deadline that I will not be able to beat.

Still, knowing my possibilities will be good. Even if it turns out I'm not allowed to finish it. And I did learn a lot. It has not been a waste of time.

We have something in common - burnout at a job, then autism dx.

Am wondering if your current job involves delivering?

Probably will cost over 1500 euro to sign in. And it is not clear if I can be allowed to finish it, being partly on benefit, and being on benefit can not be used to finish Uni. There should be another option, but, because of some 'goodwilling' policy of the company I worked for before I was 30 (Uni :duh:) I can't prove that I've been through non-functional stages before the age of 30, and am not entitled to disability money for a condition that is there since childhood.

The latter sucks in more ways than just for uni. It also makes the chance of finding a job smaller. There are more rewards and backups available for companies who hire someone with a "disability from youth on income".

Uni never reported my long sick-leave to the bureau that needed to know it, not wanting to harm my resume in the future. Their decision, can't be turned back.

But no matter what the outcome, I hope to find out soon. Then I can make plans according to my options.

I'm sorry it's so expensive and you can't use benefits to pay for it.

Here, people who get benefits often can get extra money for college so they can get a better job.

That's bureaucracy here. I can probably get extra money for an education on a lower level, though they are economising lots lately. They fear students not finishing their studies in time, and then finishing it while on benefits. Students have to pay back part of the money they get to study, Benefits does not need to paid back. So, there is some logic in it. Benefit is the last resource.

I've got a small job, part of unemployment pay, still from the former job I had, and on top of that, to get me on a minimum acceptable income, I get benefit.

Major hindrance for my studies is the fact that I cannot prove via official channels that I have experienced problems due to aspergers before the age of 30. That would make my options in many respects a lot better.

There also is a time limit on how long I can have to finish my study, if I do get clearance and if I can find ways to fund it. And I am seriously wondering if I can make it in that time. Should be possible, if absolutely everything goes better than according to plan. Not realistic. So, if I can get clearance and funding, I would have to get myself extra time too. My hopes are not that high. But, I will try. And I'd rather know, to be able to make new plans then.

Will have some talks in January.

There is some hope when it comes to uni.

I started in a time when they were just abolishing the "candidate" certificate. All had to go through to the doctoral to get the equivalent of a masters. Now they have adopted the bachelors/masters system. And I have done more than is needed for a bachelors. Soooo..... there may be a possiblity that they will give me a bachelors certificate, based on what I have done.

I am only half a year away from the equivalent of a masters, but.... I would have to do it in half a year too. Last chance to finish my thesis would be begin august. After that, the old-style certificate and program will not work anymore. I would need a half year full-time, without any misfortune or difficulty. That is not realistic. My kids do need lots of attention. I do have a job. And life will have a few unpleasant surprises for me too, I am sure of that.

If they can give me a bachelors, I would be able to re-enter university later, if I would ever like to go for my masters. And the bachelor certificate would be helpful in lots of things. Like finding a job, or doing a course increasing my chances of finding a job.

All in all, I am content with this. It would be a valuation for what I have achieved. And that will be a good thing to be able to provide proof for that. So, I really hope it will work out.

Congrats.

What's a theology course like? I was about to take one when I was still a Christian.

And what attracts you to such a subject?

What attracted me?

I wanted to know the reasons why, behind the dogma. I do come from a rather strict form of Calvinism.

Was really interesting. Depends per country what a theology course will be like I guess. Here, if you do it at a university, you can't get around the critical subjects.

The course consists of lots of subjects, Church-history of course,
Literature of old and new testament. Learning to read texts critical, to make choices in what you read as the most original text. History behind the text. History about how the texts evolved. Quite interesting. This included Greek and Hebrew too.
Dogmatics, where does dogma come from, how did it evolve. What happened when some choices were made, what was left out, where did politics come in, how did that affect things.
Psychology, bit of psychiatry too. Vicars often are first or last resources for people with huge psychiatric problems. Important to recognise, and to learn that you can't solve it all.
Bit of pedagogic skills.
Hermeneutics. Learning to write sermons too.
Pastoral skills, how to talk one on one with people, with respect.
Dialogue. (under the name of missiology) The place I did, theology clearly had the POV that there was no evangelising, but only dialogue, trying to understand. And asking the same attempt to understand from the partner in conversation. This subject consisted of critical attitude towards one self, and learning a lot about other religions. Newer curricula are even more focussed on how society is today.
There was a bit of sociology in the course too.
Feminist theology was one of my favourite subjects. Goddess movement, reading critical from the pov of a woman. Complete different light on it all again.
Philosophy was part of the curriculum too.

I went there for the history of and reasoning behind dogma.
And got every space I needed to ponder on that.

Didn't make me more a believer. Doubt always was and will my middle name. Maybe it did make me a bit more religious, and a bit less committed to one faith. Did give me more patience with believers. Not looking at the beliefs in itself, but at why it is important for them to believe what they do. And it gave me both the tools to be more precise in criticising my heritage, and in valuing the good things it gave me too.

And, as a side-effect, I think it was a very good training for me to learn how to interact with people.
The practical year was very intense, and we were bugged for every possible intonation and wording that could be taken the wrong way. Over the top socialising training, combined with logopedic training. Did me no harm at all.
I still can't deal with groups. Failed miserably at that part of the practical year. But, I can do the one on one, and I can speak to a crowd.

Hey hyke, I am wondering if you could tell me something about these socks. I got them long ago when my then-boyfriend's mum came back from visiting family in The Netherlands. She initially gave the socks to him but he said to me later, "I'm not wearing socks with hearts on them!" and so gave them to me. They wouldn't have fit him anyway as he had pretty big feet.

Those are Frisian socks. The hearts are no hearts but leaves from the Nuphar lutea. It is a part of the Frisian flag on the socks.

Fries is a language different from Dutch. Friesland is one of the northern provinces of the Netherlands. They take pride in their language, their lakes and the "Elfstedentocht". Every winter people hope there will be an Elfstedentocht again. But most of the time, if people want to do a long distance skating tour on natural ice, they have to do the alternative route in Finland.

Zegh would have been able to tell you more about that. Danish and Norwegian are pretty close. Swedish does have a lot in common with Danish too. So Odeon will be a more reliable source for an answer.

Can tell you that "bah" in Dutch is used in a way that "yuck" is used in English. Also that in toddler and kindergarten language some people use "grote bah" and '"kleine bah" to talk about poo and pee. Some wil even ask a kid if it needs to do a "bah" or "bah bah".

So, who knows, could be somewhat similar in Danish.

Why should we be afraid of male nudity, or female nudity? Nothing to be afraid of, nor be ashamed of.

Scandinavian and German people are even less troubled by nudity.

What do Americans find so terrifying, when seeing a penis on a screen?

Movies that have a penis on the screen often get a NC-17 rating. That's the rating for what most people in the states consider to be too violent, or too pornographic.

Half of the population takes a penis in his hand serveral times a day. Probably sees it serveral times a day too. Nifty peeling utensil. What is pornographic about a penis as such?

I wonder the same about female nipples. Apparently they are not safe to be seen for youngsters, while lots of kids sucked them as a baby. Even feeding a baby is seen as obscene. Male nipples are OK.

Porn is about raising  sexual tension. Seeing a man in the nude, with dangly bit oncovered does not cause that for me.

If male frontal nudity is seen as worse than female frontal nudity, does that mean people are afraid men could turn gay by watching?
