i love old houses, too.  i don't think i could live in a modern house, although i am thinking of a self-build eco house when i next move.  i'll make it look old, though.  ;)

have you ever seen the ones partially built underground on a hillside to take advantage of the natural heating and cooling of the earth?  This is one of the things that I am very inerested in. My business is making houses more efficient energy wise

i have, yes, and there's always frank lloyd wright's stuff, although that's less about energy efficiency.

i'll be going for a timber-framed number though, i suspect, unless i can get hold of any recycled stone.  if i ever get round to doing it, of course.  ::)

In New England there is a big market for the old barns and houses to reclaim the timber for new ones.  Many of the beams are sizes and types of wood unavailable today

I like traditional homes but always figured if I had to change I'd go all out like that

I have a friend who rents a 150-yo house. Eco it's not--the heating costs a fortune because there are still some windows to be replaced with modern ones--but it's very cool.

One of the things I do for work is energy audits on older homes and give ideas on how to make them more energy efficient
