Yeah mice must be sick of cheese by now. If not of the taste, of the cliche.  :cheese:

Did you ever see a mouse with a human ear on its back?

i forget.... did they attach the ear and show that it can survive on the mouse?

or was the mouse born with the ear on it and they showed how human and mouse genes arent so different (they arent**) and that it still develops properly?

i know it's supposed to help contribute to being able to clone human organs for transplant surgeries ect....

though it does certainly open up many other doors

** in fact, they are finding out that the main difference between organisms is in the junk DNA inbetween genes... they're finding out that this "junk" actually controls a lot of gene regulation/expression... explains why humans and monkeys AND mice can have such a high percentage so similar DNA yet be diff species... also explains how a lot of studies are finding conflicting results as to why or why not some genes are involved in certain conditions... cause it may not be the gene that's mutated... but this junk DNA is F***ed up and causing the same effect as a gene mutation... but when you go in and look at DNA... sequence looks fine (ie no mutation)... new and hot field that we dont know a lot about

Neither, they grew the ear on the mouse by using a biodegradable ear structure and bovine cartilage.

Neither, they grew the ear on the mouse by using a biodegradable ear structure and bovine cartilage.

ok, i see what they did... but to do that what they are doing is inducing the native mouse "growth genes" ( really what they are are  homeotic transcription factors which are genes responsible for setting up our segmental body parts and helping them to grow in specfic places [which you can mutate and express ectopically, say on backs]) to take some basic building blacks and complete the process.... this is only possible due to gene conservation between the species.

so they took human ear gene... linked it up with the mouse transcriptionfactor for ear growth... and ectopically expressed (mutated) where the mouse gene was telling "grow ear here"....  so in effect... the mouse's normal biological process grew the ear (with a lil basic biodegradable help) using the mouse's biological processes.

they started doing all this stuff in flies... check out antennapedia.... where they made feet (pedia) frow on the head where antennas should be

same kind of homeotic transcription factors involved

I haven't been to DC in forever.   The Smithsonian museums and the zoo there are great obviously and should provide you with something to do.

am meeting some aspies on campus...

but i just have a lot of work and am in a crappy emotional situation so im sure it's more my fault for not feeling like being more social...

but most the kids in our program are married and live like 30 min away and are just kinda lame in general
Title: Re: Anyone in DC area?

Sorry to hear you aren't finding any entertainment in the area.   I have only been to DC three times in my life, so I know jack shit to do there other than the obvious tourist crap.   It sure as hell is easy for me to not feel like socializing.   I probably talk to a maximum of 3 people a day while I am on campus (including TAs and Professors).   People suck haha.   Most of my friends who got married became lame not long after the marriage.   They do nothing that is fun anymore, just live out boring as hell lives.
