Wellllllllllllllllllllll, I think what I'll do instead is set theory mixed with (general)Topology. Most Topologists are algebraists as well.
There are other kinds of Topologists too, but Algebraic Topoology is interesting.

The chance of most academics being in that position is very slim. Most discoveries I would openly publish, but if something was going to give me that level of trouble, I would just publish it anonymously.

I think that it has been proven that it is impossible to either prove or disprove it using the Zermelo-Fraenkel axioms of set theory plus the axiom of choice.
Therefore it is independent of the axioms.
I think that it is analogous to the parallel postulate in geometry.
If you assume it is true, then you have Euclidean geometry. If you assume it is not true, then you have non-Euclidean geometry.
In Euclidean geometry, the angles of a triangle add to 180 degrees, but this is not true in non-Euclidean geometries.

Ive had a few exchanges of words with him but never took it seriously. I don't know if he did or not - probably more than i did anyway.
But he seems quite pleasant to chat to about Monty Python, Father Ted, etc. and Doctor Who ( if youre into that sort of thing.)
