I went to a seminar last night where Dawkins was reading from his book. All the way through, Christians were tearing ofF their crosses and beads and throwing them away while Dawkins cheered then for seeing reason. However, I jUSt sat through it with a smug smile on my face, waiting to drop my bomb that would defeat him utterley for the last time.
Al the end of the talk I stood up and said, " so basically you deny God from lack of evidence." he said "yes".
I said "I have no evidence of your thoughts, do I? So how do I know you have a brain???"
He just stood there, quivering. Then he fell to his knees and started crying, "God forgive me, what have I done, I have sinned, what have I done".
Then he crawled away on his hands and knees dripping tears on the stage, while everyone applauded me. Then I led them to the nearest church.

First book of his i read was 'climbing mount improbable' ( or something like that), i managed to finish it with some skimming.
I just don't like his style, drones on and on and on...

I have done some reading up on articles by people who have read his books, and skimmed a few of his myself. His website really says all though, it so reminded me of scientology. As for his ego, having quotes of yourself in the style of a religious leader says it all really. As for the acting one, I have met people in it properly (I went to the BBC, but that is another story), albeit about 7 years ago. Stop defending the guy because he is at Oxford, I disliked him long before that.

Its an ego contest between institutions really, its about who is academically the best. Most of it is superficial and meaningless, and about league tables (oxford gets an inflated score by having a massive asset base in its libraries, even if much of that is the buildings and first editions of books that are not really used by anyone, otherwise cambridge would beat it).

your "grant" money (and there's actually no such thing anymore, btw) is SDA (Student Disability Allowance) though, isn't it? that's not means tested.

The DSA I havent even applied for. The grant money I am talking about is the Durham Grant, and the one the government provides (if your household income is below a certain threshold, the government pays you). Plus I get DLA as well still. It adds up to a more than comfortable amount to live off, the only thing I have to do is take out a loan for the tuition fees, the rest will go into a bank and get me a decent amount of intrest for the 3-4 years.

DSA will cover some of my books I believe (among other things), when I get around to applying. Given that everything is subsided, 6-7k is more than enough to live off very comfortably. Anyway the uni library will have plenty of reading material. I am intending to have a damn good social life as well, despite being an aspie.

I intensely dislike Richard Dawkins. I must have a certain animus for any scientist who thinks I'm an idiot for believing in God even if I happen to be fully behind his science. His anti-religion crusade is actually furthering the misconception that so many Americans seem to suffer from: that evolutionary biology is inimicable to monotheism. Considering that the appallingly high percentage of creationists in America has remained unchanged for more than 50 years, people like him are not helping to create a scientifically literate America.
He has, however, shown us how to write a best seller. Simply copy and paste the most childish rant from any atheism forum and repeat it for about 400 pages, and fans of Sam Harris and will hail it as "brilliant".

This is kind of puerile. It is entirely obvious from the way 'The G-d Delusion' is written that it is not addressed to sincere believers. He does seem to hope that they will read it and wake up to the real world, but he has almost no grasp of the religious mentality and consequently fails in every way to address their questions and concerns.
In my opinion, anyone sick enough to need a sense of certainty about the universe and their place in it is better off with a religion. I am a bit torn on this point. I entirely agree that he can seem far too forceful in his argumentation, but I suppose he feels it is necessary to counterbalance the all-too-familiar crusading from the religious camp. And it is not as though any of the positions which he champions are controversial: biological evolution has been proven and demonstrable fact for half a century, and continuing to deny it is nothing short of moronic. If we, as a society, are supposed to allow for a crusader mentality to be appropriated by those who wish to put out their own eyes and live in a fantasy world, I can't see that we can sustain any real objection to Dawkin's particularly bombastic rhetoric and oversimplification.

However, I jUSt sat through it with a smug smile on my face, waiting to drop my bomb that would defeat him utterley for the last time.
Al the end of the talk I stood up and said, " so basically you deny God from lack of evidence." he said "yes".
I said "I have no evidence of your thoughts, do I? So how do I know you have a brain???"
He just stood there, quivering. Then he fell to his knees and started crying, "God forgive me, what have I done, I have sinned, what have I done".
Then he crawled away on his hands and knees dripping tears on the stage, while everyone applauded me. Then I led them to the nearest church.
That's pretty funny... I like that. I'm not necessarily a christian, I do find it funny when pompous asses like that are shot down.
