I like reading in the bath. And when I reach the end of a chapter or essay or suduko puzzle etc... I enjoy watching it bob around in the water. And I enjoy the sensation of squeezing it, and the noise they make.

That and they are bright yellow and just so dang happy. Like it is eternally glad to see you.

What did you think of the cities in the US that you visited?

When did you see New Orleans and what did you do there?

Other countries: New Zealand, and USA.

My sister lives in California. I travelled around USA becaue the cities I visited were/are cities I am interested in visiting. I visited Sacramento because that is where my sister went to college. I visited San Fran because that is where my sister took us. I visited Las Vegas to play baccarac in a dinner jacket and see Evlis. I visited LA because that's where the international terminal is. I visited New Orleans for the food, the music, and the fan boats. I visited New York for the symphonies, the art galleries, and the buildings.

As far as all the cities are concerned I loved them as they gave me exactly what I wanted. New Orleans and New York were by far the best. I saw my favourite opera (Madame Butterfly) performed by the NY Opera Company, I saw Sleeping beauty (ballet) performed FOR FREE by a ballet school. I saw Tchaicovsky's (sp?) first violin concerto and "pictures at an exhibition" (Mussorgsky) by the NY metropolitan philharmonic. Apart from that I loved walking around and looking at the skyscrapers. It was magical. I had never seen anything like it! :)

In New Orleans I saw jazz club after jazz club. Favourite place was Preservation Hall, and the New Orleans zoo. Favourite time was when I ended up giving a summer camp bunch of kids a tour of the monkey/ape area (no zoo keepers available) and saw Satchmo the gorilla. (named for Louis Armstrong.) Another favourite moment was also seeing Clarence "Frogman" Henry do "I aint got no home." I am still trying to recreate the muffalotta (however its spelled) sandwich, as yet with no luck. And the cajun food I cook just can't hold a candle to the stuff over there. Fanboats were awesome too, the windburn was shocking though.

In Las Vegas I got my photo taken with three different elvis's but I only kept one. Saw 4 Elvis impersonators and lost 100 dollars to the MGM at baccarac. It was fantastic. The other cities I visited because I had to. And didn't get to go to any other zoo's apart from the one in New Orleans. Best zoo in the world though is Singapore. (I left it off the list because I saw it as a youngster so I don't really class it as "going to another country" unless I do it myself. But they had (at least they did 20 years ago) all the great ape species. First time I had seen a bonobo chimpanzee.

In NZ I went to Christchurch for my mum's wedding, and I went to Queenstown and went bungee jumping, white water rafting, and mountain biking. (summer) That was fantastic, but there is no way known to man I will ever go bungee jumping again.

New Orleans was a lot of fun for me too.  I loved the Cajun food and the Audubon Zoo and Mardi Gras was amazing.  I visited there several times when I lived in Baton Rouge.

It would be really difficult for you to recreate the Muffuletta sandwich unless you can get good bread where you live, but here is a recipe that I found for the rest of it:

http://www.gumbopages.com/food/samwiches/muff.html

The foods I miss most from Louisiana are the crawfish etouffee and the beignets and cafe au lait.  I can sometimes find those here in Colorado, but it's not the same.

Callaway, yeah, I loved the beignets. Didn't like the hickory coffee much though.

Don't think I ever had the crawfish etoufee's but the crawfish gumbo's were to die for! And Jambalaya... *gurgle*

My current fave photo of me is myself with two beignets and a hickory coffee sitting in Cafe Royale. Only photo of me I really like because I think I look okay in it.

That is a really good picture, Izaak.  It's not hickory coffee though, it's chicory coffee.  I agree that it is an acquired taste.

Chicory is a roasted herb that was added to coffee in France during the French Civil War when coffee was scarce and the tradition came to Louisiana with the Acadians (Cajuns).

My favorite place for beignets and cafe au lait was Cafe Du Monde in the French Quarter.

Post by: Izaak on August 05, 2007, 01:09:45 AM
Du Monde was definately awesome... but there was always a line about 20-30 deep to get in the place. So I went with Royale.

And I skipped all the history lessons/tours of New Orleans. Something I am growing to regret. I was mainly there for the music and the fanboats and the food. I'd be interested if I went back there. But I have so many other cities I want to visit so it'll probably be a while.

Who's your favorite director?
Title: Re: ask Izaak.
Post by: Izaak on August 05, 2007, 01:47:23 AM
I would never pick a movie/tv series/opera/play based on who was directing it.

By way of answering your question though I would say:

Ben Elton for comedy movies.
Stephen Spielberg for drama movies.
James Cameron for action movies.
and Joss Whedon for TV shows.

Who's your favorite dictator?
Title: Re: ask Izaak.
Post by: Izaak on August 05, 2007, 05:48:54 AM
Ben Elton: Oh, my bad... apparently he only directed one movie, and one tv show. I thought he directed more than that... I picked him because he was responsible for a lot of the Young Ones, Blackadder, Mr. Bean, and The Thin Blue Line... also a few books and a musical (seperate but distinct)... By way of answering a different question... insert Ben Elton as my favourite comedic writer.

I am an australian. Though I was born in Melbourne Victoria. I did however largely grow up in Perth. And yes, I love Perth. Great climate (except it gets a little cold here in winter.. was down to 6 degrees last night! :( ) (celsius) It also has a laid back atmosphere that is very country for a city.

As for favourite dictator. I have none. There is nothing to be admired about someone who wields legitimised power over other human beings. Mikhail Gorbachev would be my answer, but my only admiration for that man is for ending the reign of the CPSU.

They are in the sense that the laws are different and there is no longer the potential for complete governmental control over their lives. How that translates into the actual culture and what powers are being exercised and to what extent... I have no idea.

Do you like fluorescent lights?

How often do you hear them whenever you see them?

I prefer the yellow light given off by filament globes. They do not affect me in any other manner.

I can hear the hum. It does gett a little annoying at times, but really only if there is more than one... and that is the extent of it.

Title: Re: ask Izaak.

I will answer because I am online, heh.
TEE means Tertiary Entrance Examinations. The scores from these influence whether you can go to university, which one and so on.

It is also easier to get into TAFE (Tertiary And Further Eduacation), a place like college, with TEE scores.

So what subjects did you do? I always wanted to do Human Biology, did you do that?
Title: Re: ask Izaak.
Post by: Izaak on August 09, 2007, 05:29:22 AM
Yes I did human biology. I got dux in it and got invited to human biology student's conference etc... July 10th 1997 remains the best day of my entire life :) I went along to previously mentioned human biologist student conference/brunch and listened to talks from various anthropologists. Then spent half the day talking to lots of people about my obsession without anyone thinking I was a wierdo! It was grouse!

As for TEE subjects:
English
Economics
Human Biology
Math
Physics

As for scores I only ended up with 416 our of possible 512. For those who can't be stuffed grabbing a calculator (or opening calc.exe) that means 81%. Got 100 on Human Biol though... my teacher told me. So, while that was to be expected, don't know how I did on the tee exams for any of the other subjects. And 81% is not indicative of how I did in those subjects... I hate doing exams because when I am in a room with a whole bunch of people i get headaches and find it hard to focus my mind on what I want to focus it on.

My primary obsession with primates has more to do with phylogenetics. But if you have any questions... fire away. I must warn you though that I am no doctor. I can answer quite a few questions though. And those I don't know, I'll find out :)

Humans are facinating creatures and I'm always up for more avenues of research I had never though of before.

I just looked up phylogenetics on wikipedia and found this image:
That is one complicated subject. How did you start to be interested in it?

Monophyly is directly translated from Ancient Greek meaning "Of one race". Which simply means that your study includes ALL decendants. In the case of the diagram it means birds and reptiles back to a common ancestor. (yellow area)

Paraphyly translates as "near race". Which pragmatically means you only take into consideration only one branch of a particular common decendant including other related decendants. In this case, excluding birds. (blue area)

Polyphyly translates as "Many races". In this case you group them based on something other than an attribute of a common ancestor. In the case of the diagram it was actually "warm bloodedness". The common ancestor of both birds and mamals (both warm-blooded) was cold blooded. Therefore the attribute developed independantly at different times and in different ways. Therefore they bear no direct relationship in that sense, so they can be said to be "polyphetic".

How that relates to primates? Well, my interest lies in tracing the similarities and differences in the various ape species and learning how the different species tick. While I am "interested" in primates, my specific narrowminded aspie perseveration is learning specifically where and how each of the attributes in human beings evolved. And how they are different similar to other apes.

How did I get into it? Well, my first book that I really took notice of when I was learning to read was Origin of Species. Further research and following up the ideas lead me to evolutionary biology. I didn't care much about any other species but when I figured out (in a sort of final way) that humans evolved from distant ancestors I was "intrigued". I guess that's how I was hooked. Though why I was drawn to Origin of Species as a 7 year old I have no idea. I didn't understand a lot of what was going on in the book, but the instant I read it I wanted to know it all...

I am not really interested in talking about sex or the associated organs or stimulation of afforementioned oragns so I pick and chose which topics to read. It's a good diversion at the moment.

As for what I've been up to?

Well, West Australia is about to get a bill of rights so I have been creating my comments/suggestions for submissions. Booked a place at the Wacca for a discussion with the "Human Rights Panel", and I'llbe heading there on monday. Apart from that I been reading through a new text book I have bought (A new edition. It has been dissapointing so far, only changes appear to be new text boxes highlighting the impact of females of the species through cultural history.) Working, saving up because I am thinking of getting a motorcycle and a appropriate licence. Apart from that, not alot... at the moment I am waiting with giddy anticipation for when I can go to see the new Bourne movie.

you seen it already? bugger? I have resisted downloading it because I want to see it on the big screen. I got the books, (plus the recent non-ludlum ones) and am really enjoying the big-screen adaptions. Not a big fan of Matt Damon, but he does a good movie-bourne.

And yeah, there is plenty to read. But I have never been one for idle-chit chat so most of this stuff bores the hell out of me... there is enough here on intensity to keep me interested though. Recently bought up 9hours logged in time.

I am not really fussed about being in the aspie elite. If you want to stick me in then sure, go for it. If I do end up getting in I'll request: "Minister for Agricultue of the Aspie Elite"

That test seemed bizzarre. Some of the questions dodged some specific difficulties I have, while also exaggerating stuff that I don't find that difficult. Ah well, I am sure the designer of that test knows more about it than I do.
