Title: Altered posts
Post by: Scrapheap on April 08, 2007, 07:52:53 AM
Since ascan can't give a specific example of the admins altering peoples posts here, does anybody know what he's talking about ??

yes, he's talking about smoke and mirrors.
it happened by slight of hand.
it was magic.

or imagined.  i can't remember which.

It is of course bollocks. He should know that even staff can't edit posts here without it being visible to all - if he didn't believe us telling him several times, you'd think he'd take Emoga's word for it.  ::)

Also, I smoke pole! :green:

I was thinking of editing to show that as well.  Damn your beating-me-to-itness.

You would have to log in as the person who posted it, before you tried to alter it, right? Even then you could only hide who did it and not the fact of the alteration or the time it happened, right?

I know one type of software that allows "no visible trace to the public" editing, which an overmoderated board called DIY Audio uses. They are constantly removing "language" usage. Nazis!

You can't hide your editing a post, if a) somebody's posted after that post or b) you weren't the original poster. Ascan's full of it, as always. Specifically, he's trying very hard to bait me and Dunc. (Those of you who don't have a clue about what I'm talking about, head over to OTS and read for yourselves...)

Seems like someone is asking for an E-wedgie, only I think it should be fairly permanent or, at least, removable only through surgery. I am so far out of this loop, that it is easy to see the idiocy without any emo"fog".

Omega_Female responded and posted a link to the posts. She claims you edited her post on 4 occasions.

While I could understand someone getting a little irked at this, I don't understand how this got blown out of porportion. Were there other issues that were going on at the same time ??

LOL, she means the 'what are you listening to now, you cunt' thread - the initial post has been repeatedly edited (as visibly shows that to be the case) as the stupid bitch was being deliberately insulting so we were changing the title to nonsensical stuff like 'you rabid badger', etc. She and I had a brief exchange of insults using that post as a messageboard also. OMFG admin abuse of power!!!!!111eleventy-one!  :wanker:

We don't have that kind of software here.

I edited someone's OP to remove a superfluous "the" in the thread's title after someone noticed it several pages into the thread.  I can't remember right now which thread it was, but I noted what I had done when I did it and of course the post itself notes that I edited it.  Here, there is no edit note only if the OP edits his own post within 90 seconds.  If the OP edits it after that or if anyone else edits it at any time, there is always an edit note saying who edited it and when.

As for logging in as the OP to edit a post, the OP would have to give you their password for you to do that.

Thanks, Callaway, but I never thought that anyone here was doing goofy stuff to posts. I just mentioned the (PHP) software because they can and actualy do sneaky stuff over there, because sneakiness is built-in to the software from the start. They had over a hundred moderators at one time and they left no traces of their handiwork.

I know you don't edit things, except to help.

I'v seen altered posts when the quote button was used.  It's been done to me, but, it doesn't alter the original post.  But, weren't the same accusations made about the major complainants.

It just seems to me, to be a case of the pot calling the kettle black. ::)   Really people don't you have anything better to do.

OOPS, silly me, this is I2 after all and a good flame war is relished by all.  Though I really don't like relish, I'm more of a yellow mustard and catsup man myself.  Though mayonaisse is the best with a Lobster roll.  And tartar sauce is pretty decent with Fried Clams, but, my preference is ketchup with the little darlin's..........er, what was the discussion about!

It is really easy to alter an original post by accident, as an admin.

I've caught myself partway through doing this a couple of times
(not here, obviously). I am certain that I've done it once for real.

They have specific rules (http://www.onthespectrum.com/board/misc.php?action=rules) at OTS.  I guess she broke them with that post (http://www.onthespectrum.com/board/viewtopic.php?pid=15793#p15793).

But you have to take into account that OTS is not the same as Intensity.

My guess would be that she violated this rule with that post:

2.1 You will not do anything on the site that disrupts the peace and harmony of this forum. This includes, but not is limited to:

 b. Baiting where a member harasses another member to the point where he or she might retaliate in a flame.

I don't have anything to do with any of it so I don't know, but it looked to me like she was deliberately baiting Odeon and Dunc.

Didn't seem that bad a post to me, but, then again, I don't know how long this has been bouncing around the last few days.  Or how long Mockingbird's patience was tested.  I don't know how I would react in that position of admin. for a controversy like that.

I hope thats the end of it!

It was written to deal with that kind of line walking, where people like ascan taunt the less careful into flaming them, and get away with being twats without incurring any penalty. It works.  :police:

Omega was only there to help out Ascan. There was no reason for either of them to discuss Intensity in a welcome thread, except to bait me and Dunc. It's what Ascan does, and since Omega's his special friend and all...

Btw, Omega wasn't banned, she was suspended.

I'm glad I rejoined OTS, it's gotten a lot more interesting lately.  When Renaeden posts again, I intend to plus her.  Until then I'll plus Odeon.........but, then again, I'd plus him anyway!    8)

I'm having this temptation to make my avatar at OTS, me doing an impersonation of Odeon's avatar.  I have similar glasses and it would be a cheeky thing to do.  (just thought I'd warn Odeon before I did) :eyebrows:
Title: Re: Altered posts
Post by: duncvis on April 10, 2007, 05:28:14 PM
It has definitely perked up a lot, there's been a bunch of new posters and Mockingbird's back and looking to the future. Its probably worth mentioning here that OTS's 'mission' is very different to this place, i.e. that anyone who is willing to act right in their head is welcome and to be a place where folk can go hang out and support each other in a 'safe', comfortable environment. If you feel like playing vanilla its a good place - like WP used to be. As such it has a TOS aimed at supporting the site's aims. I like Mockingbird a lot, she's a genuine lass and a fucking good person, which is why anyone who goes down there with the express aim of stirring up shit generally has me to deal with. And if I don't get you, the O-Master will.  :evillaugh:

Thats a good enough endorsement for me. 8)  I don't see Mockingbird attacking I2 either.  And sometimes I like a little "vanilla" as a change of pace.

Not really, I just feel that your despairing about finding someone who's willing to go toe to toe with you in glorious combat.  Thats not a criticism just my gut feeling.  You've mentioned your disappointment in there not being any good "flame" battles on here.  I'v done my part to get good combative, intelligent people on here.

I don't think that's it. I think that sometimes we try too hard to connect by being open, direct and honest and it still gets us into trouble, even here. Being vanilla may not save you from yourself. If someone tries to force a controversy, it doesn't always work, either.

It certainly doesn't make sense for everyone to go somewhere else to talk.

You don't have to choose, you know. There's room for more than one forum on the 'net. OTS's mission is very different from this place, which is why I frequent both.

Ozy, I want to see the new avatar. I've been thinking about switching but maybe I should wait a little longer, huh?
