Judging from his air of wise authority, he is a man in his fifties, of a healthy, open outlook and vast experience. Ahem. I was amazed to find that the bigoted, embittered, small minded little twat was only a few years older than me. :LMAO:

He is in his "mid-thirties", according to himself. I forget where he said it.

Well, shit, I was told all wrong, then. I thought you created the universe so you wouldn't be quite so bored, but it didn't work as well as you had hoped.

Hyuk, hyuk, ur purty!

I wouldn't be surprised if my distant family relatives in Glasgow were like them. Father's cousin, Shuggy, seemed rather... obtuse when he came over to Bristol, but he was rather adorable in his own way.

Its just that on another site Ascan was boasting "I can remember how bad this country was before Thatcher", which suprised me.  How old was he when Thatcher became PM, 3?

Oh I know, he's so full of shit lol. if he's 37, he would have been 9 when the bitch came to power.

I remember Thatcher very well, but I'm 36.

Exactly. I'm 31, and the bitch and her callous regime are ingrained on my brain. I was three when her reign began, and have little recollection of the early years other than the Falklands - the Miners Strike onwards is what I remember well - at which point I was around the same age Ascan would have been when the Thatcher years began. :moon:

Ascan was an extremely well informed and politically aware toddler.

only from history classes.

maybe he was one of those aspies who was interested in politics at a very early age.

or maybe there is a correlation between an interest in politics and NPD.

I remember Nixon and how he boarded that helicopter. I remember Gerald Ford, and Carter, and how good Reagan and Thatcher looked together. Not.

Gerald Ford was the only President we ever had that was neither elected by the people to be President nor Vice-President.  I believe that he was selected by the Senate.

Why was he selected by the Senate?

Sorry, I was mistaken.  Gerald Ford was selected by the House of Representatives, not the Senate.

Quote
Vice Presidency, 1973–74

On October 10, 1973, Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned. According to The New York Times, "Nixon sought advice from senior Congressional leaders about a replacement. The advice was unanimous. 'We gave Nixon no choice but Ford,' House Speaker Carl Albert recalled later".

Ford was nominated to take Agnew's position on October 12, the first time the vice-presidential vacancy provision of the 25th Amendment had been implemented. The United States Senate voted 92 to 3 to confirm Ford on November 27, and on December 6, the House confirmed him 387 to 35.

Wasn't Ford extremely colorless or am I mistaken?
Title: Re: ascan's age?

I don't know about colorless, but try to find something of historical significance with his name on it.

There's a part of my mind is thinking "Panama Canal", but that is fuzzy right now. It could have been Carter. I'll research, to refresh my memory.

Who ever gave it away was a dunce!

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it was Carter. Sweden gave up all of Norway peacefully in 1905. It had been in a forced union with Sweden since 1814. Typically Swedish.  :(

Gerald Ford did not get a lot of media attention, but he was actually a very decent human being, IMO.

He was perceived as clumsy because he tripped on a step and was filmed doing it, then Chevy Chase lampooned him on Saturday Night Live as being extremely clumsy.  Actually, he was captain of the football team in high school and he played football in college as well.  He was a gifted athlete.

He was criticized for granting a Presidential Pardon to Richard Nixon for his involvement in the Watergate cover-up after he resigned and that is probably a big part of the reason that Jimmy Carter won the next election.  Another part is that Gerald Ford was appointed to be the Vice President after Spiro Agnew resigned because of a tax evasion and bribery scandal, and when that was compounded by the Watergate scandal, I think voters just wanted a change for their next president, someone who was above even the appearance of evil.  Also, the economy was a great concern duing Ford's administration and those stupid Whip Inflation Now (WIN) pins did not do a lot to actually stop inflation.

He did do a couple of really good things while he was president, IMO.  He signed a law in 1975 guaranteeing full educational rights and opportunities for "Handicapped Children" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_for_All_Handicapped_Children_Act), and he was a strong supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment.

Thank you.
I had forgotten about the Equal Rights involvement.

It's hard to imagine that they were still having to pass laws about that, at that late date, but I have been sheltered, I guess..

The Equal Rights Amendment was never ratified.

I never thought he was that bad but OTOH, I was 11 when he lost the election to Carter.
