Title: Special treatment??
Post by: Devil's Advocate on February 04, 2007, 01:21:19 AM
Since there's so much effort to keep Intensity from becoming a "Sausage Party" ,have we gone too far and are we treating women with kid's gloves and giving them special treatment??
Title: Re: Special treatment??

I treat women well on a seperate basis than the desire for intensity to not become a sausage party, however, my reasons may be just as ethically unacceptable.

No, I think they have not received any special treatment other than the kind of occasional common courtesy that should be extended to everybody.

I'd hope we're not treating anyone with kid gloves. We're not a frigging babysitting service! But we do have a history of calling people cunts and winding them up for loads of better reasons than their gender, colour or religion.

No, I think they have not received any special treatment other than the kind of occasional common courtesy that should be extended to everybody.

I'd broadly agree with this, but I'd hate to see this place becoming more sensitive and emo-friendly. The last thing we need is to attract too many Wrong Planeteers.

I think some people from wrong planet could benefit from what we have to teach them.  But I treat females differently because of my own weak, personal problems.  (I am not entirely certain I do, but I assume I do.)

I'll put it bluntly Nomaken - it gets fucking boring, when people bring whining and negativity to Intensity, and people start feeling obliged to tiptoe around folk and watch their mouths. It just fucks things up and kills the fun, and can make people feel stifled.

I find negative and sensative people engaging.  I feel like they are challenges.  Academic challenges are nothing compared to social ones.  I definitely don't find them boring. --- But what does that have to do with this thread?
Title: Re: Special treatment??
Post by: odeon on February 04, 2007, 05:00:13 AM
I'd like to add to my previous post that common courtesy doesn't mean that I want to turn this place into some ghastly support forum. There are enough of those already, and some of them are really good.

It just means that we don't have to start by telling the emos to fuck off. I usually wait until the third or fourth post. :P

I feel an instinctive desire to support "emo" people.  An instinctive desire to make people happy.  Especially the most unhappy people.

Personally I don't agree that there has been a lot of effort made towards improving the sausage party feel of the site, and I don't believe that the recent dullness of the board has anything to do with women being given special treatment.   But I think you are right in the sense that there is some special/kid glove treatment going on, just that its happening with both male and female members (or at least it seems that way to me).

The ironic thing is, is that its because of this that I'm reluctant to post my opinion on this- but I'm going to do it anyway- there are some members who seem over-sensitive just lately and yeah, that means that a lot of the time I feel like I have to watch what I say in case someone has a fit about it.  I think common courtesy is one thing, but on a site full of people with TOM issues having to guess how people will take every little comment you make doesn't lead to a good atmosphere in my opinion.

I don't think so.  There are some people here who try to be kind to people who are having problems, but I don't think that it is gender-based.

Lately there has been a guy pretending to be a pirate and running around with a cutlass for a joke.  There may be a few people who would like to take that cutlass away from him but I don't think that is gender based either.

How can you really love someone you don't even know?  Just saying 'I love you' doesn't make it true no matter how much you might want it to or how much it fits in with a developed image.

I think that you and Nomaken are thinking of different definitions of the word "love" Purposeful Insanity.

Using your definition of the word, he can't really love someone he does not know, but using his definition of the word, he can and he does.

It is very easy.  Perhaps it is not the same calibur of love you give to someone you KNOW deserves love, someone you know very well.  But I nonetheless feel love for those who are not loved.  Those abandoned by others.  And even themselves.

Maybe that's because I think that people throw the word love out there too easily, imo it loses any real meaning when people do that.

Maybe i don't feel about them the way that deserves the word love.  I know that I have affection for them.  I feel pain for them.  I want to help them.  I want them to be happy.  If there is a word that more appropriately decribes how I feel for them besides love, I'll gladly change my word.
Title: Re: Special treatment??

Not necessary at all- you use whatever word you want.  My previous post is my way of explaining why I didn't believe that you could possibly love people you don't really know.  I'm expressing my opinion about the issue but I did not say that you weren't entitled to express yours.
Title: Re: Special treatment??

I'm guilty of treating new people, a little "special", but it's not gender based. I just want to see more come and stay, instead of turn and run, like so many do.

To be honest, the first three times I peaked in here, I didn't see many differences, between what I read here and what I read on WP, the only other AS friendly site I had seen. The thing that kept me trying, is the fact that two of my favorites from WP were already here ... Scr'eap and Tig.

I'm not sure why, but it seems as if I have been allowed extra room for my difficulties. I really don't fit in with the old guard of Intensity at all, but I do enjoy some of the conversations and I don't fit in most places, any better, anyway.

PI, i think what Nomaken means is the universal unconditional love most people feel toward everyone, empathy, caring... we are all chips from the same block of wood so there is a love between us all, but fear is what clouds that love for a lot of people so we can't really access all that fuzzy mojo so easily and spread it around to everybody. so we select the ones we get along with and don't fear and show them love instead, which is all fine and dandy but it's not the same as the already existing love. excuse me if i am not being very concise, i feel like my brain is lopsided. :violin:

Which one's the old guard of Intensity? ???

I got to thinking that maybe my use of that expression is not very common, so I went to Wiki ...

# Old Guard is a term used to describe part of the Leather subculture from which much of modern BDSM is derived.
(I did not know about this usage!)

# The Old Guard was a Jedi selected group, membered by Obi-Wan Kenobi, Count Dooku, Roan Shryne, Qui-Gon Jinn, Sifo Dyas, Mace Windu and others who were or would also be members of the High Council in Star Wars.
(This is closer to the type of meaning as I was intending to have others reflect upon)

I don't see that empathy/caring are the same as love (unconditional or not), sure they can often come together but I don't agree that love is necessary for the first.   I also don't agree that as a race humans have a predisposition to love absolutely everyone- how would survival of the fittest have ever worked if mankind was too busy loving everyone to actually be the 'fittest'?

I don't know, PI. If we did not have a universal love for our own kind, we would still be laying eggs in the sand and swimming back out to sea. Call it xenophobia, maybe, if love doesn't fit, but without it we would not have needed to evolve intelligence. Animal instincts would have been enough to ensure survival, in some form.

Banding together is a most important advance, which humans can't claim to have invented, but we have benefitted more than many animals by protecting and helping each other.

It's mainly when we start to subdivide among ourselves into smaller groups, that fatal problems begin.

Actually I sort of felt that and for the record I never asked for special treatment.  I know that you mean no harm and it is MY responsibility as to how I react to what you or anybody else says.  I can respond or I can ignore, my choice!  I don't like walking on eggshells any more than you do.

From  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Spaghetti_Monster

Quote
The Flying Spaghetti Monster is the deity of a parody religion founded in 2005 by Oregon State University physics graduate Bobby Henderson to protest the decision by the Kansas State Board of Education to require the teaching of intelligent design as an alternative to biological evolution. In an open letter sent to the education board, Henderson professes belief in a supernatural Creator called the Flying Spaghetti Monster, which resembles spaghetti and meatballs. He furthermore calls for the "Pastafarian" theory of creation to be taught in science classrooms, essentially invoking a reductio ad absurdum argument against the teaching of intelligent design. Followers of the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM) call themselves Pastafarians, a portmanteau of pasta and Rastafarian.

I'll put it bluntly Nomaken - it gets fucking boring, when people bring whining and negativity to Intensity, and people start feeling obliged to tiptoe around folk and watch their mouths. It just fucks things up and kills the fun, and can make people feel stifled.

But when Intensity has a private forum here which implies that it is safe to expose your vulnerabilities within this community, you can't blame that person for seeming a tad too sensitive online.

I felt that Intensity was easy for me to handle when I did not establish bonds with some people here; I happily acted like a prick with no conscience at all. However, once I've made friends here, I guess I was becoming far more reluctant to challenge those who I consider as friends -- loyalty and all that jazz.

What does that have to do with my feeling that too much whining drags the whole site down, and that if that was what we wanted why did anyone bother leaving WP? There's a middle ground between acting like a tool for the sake of it, and tiptoeing round people in case you hurt their delicate feelings. The forum for real problems was created so that there was an appropriate venue for getting stuff off people's chests, and reasonably enough responding cuntishly is frowned upon in there. Its existence should not be taken as an indication that people will treat you gently if you post elsewhere. Trying to guess where peoples boundaries and sore spots are is tiring and fucking tedious, which is why sensitive souls are encouraged to think carefully before joining us - because Intensity is a haven from having to mind your Ps and Qs.

I'm glad you grew out of randomly flaming people just because you could - but why should developing respect for people stop you challenging them? You're challenging me now, so I'm returning it - join the site again and we'll debate it properly instead of sniping from the outside. Are you up for it Pea?

Since you want to drop the charade, why don't you grow a pair and post as yourself instead of hiding, Scrapheap?

I did not bring you up in a completely unrelated topic. "Devil's Advocate" asked if women were receiving special treatment because of their gender.  I said they were not and that people wanting to take away the cutlass from the guy running around playing pirates was not gender based either.  I had written and deleted 'and do things with it', but I was thinking specifically of Graelwyn taking away the cutlass from you and cutting off your testicles and cooking them over a fire after you beheaded Harry Potter in her thread.  Since that would have been a scary thing for me to say to a real guest or a newbie, which "Devil's Advocate" was presumably pretending to be, I didn't.  In my mind, it was not gender based even though she supposedly cut off your testicles, because I saw it as a playful expression of frustration at you for derailing every discussion she started with your pirate play.

Here is what I originally actually said:

Since there's so much effort to keep Intensity from becoming a "Sausage Party" ,have we gone too far and are we treating women with kid's gloves and giving them special treatment??

I don't think so.  There are some people here who try to be kind to people who are having problems, but I don't think that it is gender-based.

Lately there has been a guy pretending to be a pirate and running around with a cutlass for a joke.  There may be a few people who would like to take that cutlass away from him but I don't think that is gender based either.

Here is your response, which is what really gave you away, with Duncvis' alteration of my post and my subsequent post quoted inside:
