Title: They're letting us all out this summer
Post by: Jesse on May 04, 2020, 06:25:39 PM
I can't help to notice that since people are itching to get out because the weather is warm they are letting all of their 'stay at home orders' to expire. My states goes out of service May 15th, I figure they will all usher us back inside once it starts getting cold

69,000 dead people thus far must not seem so scary when the weather is nice. I, personally probably won't come out of my house all that much.  (emo)

My city is letting me out because it's on a down curve.  :orly:

We are getting let out for winter.

I think the idea is to keep germy foreigners out for the foreseeable future and play "whack a mole" with any new outbreaks. The number of new cases here is hopefully low enough that we can keep it that way.

The problem with letting us out too early is that if the number of carriers and active cases explodes again, the impact on the economy of that second wave of cases is going to be shocking. Not to mention how many refrigerator trucks will be needed.

Mass grave are the way to go if they let people out too early.

No need to let anyone out in Sweden. It's pretty amazing how they have managed to avoid a blowout in mortality without the sort of measures taken elsewhere.

An unofficial government report was leaked to the media in the US, suggesting that by June there will be 3,000 people dying per day. Based on their current trajectory with allowing the lockdowns to expire, that doesn't sound unlikely.

Actually most Swedes do self-isolate, which is why the all-voluntary measures aren't a complete failure. The morons enjoying the sun in busy restaurants as seen on CNN and elsewhere are thankfully still a small minority. They are the ones that might tip the scales, eventually.

But we've utterly failed to protect our elders. Around half of the 2,700 or so dead are 70 or older. A significant number of the remaining half are immigrants from places with larger families and a different culture around socialising and less trust in governments and other authorities.

And that's a really big reason why our approach would never ever work in places like the UK or the US. Swedes, for better or worse, tend to trust their authorities and do as they are told.

I think probably the countries we remain most comparable with are Denmark and Norway, both of whom imposed strict lockdown measures and have a fraction of our mortality rate. Some Swedish scientists say that they'll catch up eventually, but many others disagree.

We're probably fucked.

Oh yes, they will get to 100,000 and more very quickly if they open up the country.

They will go 100,000 plus regardless.

At the rate they are opening up, 200K or 300K could be where it's headed.

Yes, I've heard that Swedes are following advice voluntarily. It was the opposite here when they tried that.

We have a ban on gatherings of 50+ people, and the unis are closed. That's about it. And there's a ban on visiting the elderly but that doesn't mean all that much since the restrictions on the staff have pretty much failed.

No word yet on what that will look like where I live. They only just let seasonal places like Garden centres and landscapers open.

Found a COVID-tracking app for the UK and Sweden, developed by King's College London. The idea is that anyone can report their current health and help track possible COVID symptoms.
