The alignment of issues/ideology with personal animus.
I understand how a discussion can get heated over a handful of threads, and people can escalate them
into hateful attacks. I don't see why the hell it spills out into every other conversation that is had.
It's as though these folks allow their views on a handful of issues to taint every fucking interaction they have, and it's boring as hell.

This thread is a transparent dig at my feud with the stinky gopher, isn't it?

Yeah.
You and I have had a few arguments on a few threads and seconds later one of us was responding to the other in another thread where we were joking around about something or comparing dicks or blades or something all in good fun, then another "escalated" comment in the argument thread or some such.
I kind of get this.
I lean toward the idea that not all intelligence is evidenced by how people interact. I also suspect that not all elegant interaction is inherently confirming of intellectual processes. Separations between true distrust or outright disgust or innate hostility and undefined doubt or simple questions should be clearly checker-boarded in ones mind before a discussion begins. Then talk about things.
NO one is always wrong about everything.
...... generally.

I think you should keep you animus to yourself.

Yep. I mean, I dislike what Odeon does in terms of what I see as over-moderation, but I don't see that
as, a priori, reducing the discussion to nothing else. Scrap and I are probably pretty diametrically opposed politically,
but it doesn't seem that we get into these matches.
Maybe it's because I don't care enough about the external ideology though to want to punch someone
for not seeing it my way. The closest that came to that for me was the unwillingness to seriously
undertake running the site democratically, with appropriate checks - because I 'knew' too much
about what goes wrong in such cases. In some ways though, that was still a matter of play or experimentation,
with a curiosity as to just how far people would denigrate stated ideals - at least as it played out.
The shitty part (for me) was the <rodent hole> it generated towards me.
-
Well, I frequently visit a site that uses Gorts (remember Gort?), Twelve or more of them, usually, to keep the site "positive." Dead fucking serious!
You get shitty, the Gorts ditch the entire argument.
We are going to have to disagree about Odeon. He mainly wants to find ways to keep this site up and running without having to find a new service every week or so when one of us can't find our big girl panties over some nonsense (I plead Guilty!) and goes off like a balloon that that someone just let go.
Sorry, I did not explain the Gort thing well. They are real human beings, not Gorts, but the Community has named the administrators of perfect linear justice as if they were aliens just meeting humankind for the first time. It was a funny joke at first, then it FUCKING stuck, because it FUCKING fits!
I am in frequent contact with four of the Gorts and if I go off on some kind of pyro panty panic, I usually get a PM about WTF before any of my posts are deleted.
Pretty sure Odeon's Gorts would offer a similar courtesy.

Now see, we are in agreement, philosophically, and I really wish all my leftist "friends" had a similar attitude toward discussion with an opposing viewpointed person.
It seems that I run into so many who literally HAVE to shut down a challenging question and not allow any intercourse.

Motives aren't the issue. I can't see those. It's actions.
Silencing and using administrative tools to abuse those you disagree with is inherently suspect though.

From my point, I think that's because I always saw you as a necessary Devil's advocate. I felt that many times you were espousing opinions you didn't necessarily agree with but put forth for the sake of argument. When done in good faith, this is a beneficial exercise. Your input, even when I disagree with it, is usually helpful.
BTW, in regards to the fall of the Roman Empire, I re-watched Victor Hansen's (Hist Prof at Stanford) lecture on the subject and I was right, mass immigration prior to the attacks weakened the empire to the point that they couldn't mount an effective military response.
Yer wrong, Mr. History guy. :smarty:

Yes...but that couldn't have happened amongst a group of people who allowed their
feelings about someone to differ from their feelings about their views.
It was something of a microcosm of the way political ideology has become so fucking toxic.

You do know that it is exceedingly rare among humans to be able to view ideology and personal feelings completely separately.
That is why we have those social conventions around not discussing politics or religion. Because people in meatspace get butthurt when you disagree with them and make a strong, logical, and fact based case for why your views are superior to theirs. Similar to what happens online.
-
You do know that it is exceedingly rare among humans to be able to view ideology and personal feelings completely separately.
Yeah. I guess I thought it a more NT thing.

Or an NT thing to conflate the two?
TBH I think it's a human thing.

You're both full of shit. How else could you possibly excel at chess? Which I would guess you both do.
What is at play is simple acumen, perception, acute awareness of "The Next Possible Move," anticipation and patience. Fucking cats do this.

I understand.
LOL. I'm glad that one of us does.
I was actually discussing with Cal how people get emotionally invested in their political and ideological views and take it as a personal insult (and get butthurt) when someone disagrees with them.
Strategic approaches to these battles of wits is another matter. Sizing up your opponent and figuring out the best way to handle them is, I think, what your tangent is about.

The latter. And it was based upon experience of those I got along well with, IRL, who often exhibited spectrum related behavior.
But yeah, my experience on AS sites makes it clear that that's not my only filter - nor maybe even my most important one.

I suck at chess. I like Go, but am pretty lousy at that too.
What I DON'T do is flip the board when I'm losing, nor lose friendships over a game of Diplomacy,
which I think is more applicable.

FFS, 10 years later and odeot STILL doesn't understand what went wrong with the WC. ::)
All that Cal did was expose the weakness of an unstructured direct democracy.
I saw what Cal was doing and that inspired me to propose a constitutional structure to constrain his spamming of things to vote on (and their unintended consequences). I got pilloried for offering up an effective solution.

You don't really think people can learn, do you?

They must be willing to learn, so in odeot's case, no. :M

I see some who are apparently on the spectrum who argue/waffle like politicians. No direct answers to anything, nothing concrete and nothing that can be validated or debunked. Or they will say "this is what I believe" and post a link to a youtube video of a shouty or highly opinionated person.
With some people it becomes very obvious very quickly that they are stuck on a particular viewpoint and use, at best, motivated reasoning to back it up. All you can do is to present sensible viewpoints and hope that someone else might read the conversation and see the value in your point of view. Or, if you want to have some fun, you can just toy with them and try to make their heads explode.
-
'waffling' is an interesting issue to bring up in this context. Seems the exact opposite
of the kind of ideological association with all things. Going along with whatever voice
touches them last. It's the defect of the other extreme. I find it more understandable,
because the association of strong ideals with incivility, and the desire to be liked.
But, such folk, when faced with bullying of those with different beliefs can judge
that the group will despise them if they don't join the bullying. Leads to particularly
ugliness - two-faced behavior - which I despise more than animosity born of ideology.
I can see some ideological stances (say Hitler's) rendering someone so odious that it is
difficult to like them no matter what. I don't think I can be accused of killing any Jews,
starting a world war, nor even liking children or dogs much (at least in a non-perverted manner).

Why do I still get gmails from WP or WC or whatever they call themselves?? Haven't been there in nearly a decade and I have no interest in what plankton/plankenstein has to say. Amber wants nothing to do with them and neither do I.
-
I just got one too though I was banned about a billion times from there. It reminded me of that place. I may have to visit again. They obviously value my opinions to engage me.
-
Once your a member, your always a member of wp. And I'm sure every spambot that joined up is still a member. They do not delete accounts at wp.
-
When I had my account renewed after I was banned, I found that all my PMs had been deleted. This sucks because I wanted to see mine and Kayleigh's earliest interactions because I can't remember them (ECT). I'll never see them now.
-
Wow. About the only reason I'd want to get back on my account is to look over some of the PMs.

I like Trump because he annoys all the right people just too much. It's delicious. It makes me laugh riotously every time I hear a pip squeak.
-
I won't make fun or jokes about Trump anymore. To do so will instill the idea that he is a fool and harmless. I think he is as harmless as a rabid dog.

Rabid dogs are hilarious.

Unless they bite you.

I'd think you'd find that amusing.

When my son was a baby he tried to hug an ugly stray dog on Kuta Beach (Bali). I don't think he'd ever seen a real dog before.
We were sitting under an umbrella on the beach while my wife was off shopping. It was hot and the dog came and stood under our umbrella, out of the sun. My son lunged at the dog and I managed to grab the back of his shirt and yank him away from the dog just as the dog's jaws literally snapped shut with a loud "clack" sound.
That would have been interesting. We would have been on the next flight to Singapore to get rabies shots.

Bali is basically the Aussie Canaries if I'm right on this?
-
Bali is basically the Aussie Canaries if I'm right on this?
Bali is multi-faceted.
A lot of bogans (like me) go there for very cheap holidays. Bogans are the Aussie equivalent of rednecks. You can get a return flight to Bali from Sydney for around A$400, or about 220 pounds. And in low season you can get very cheap hotels. I saw some on Trivago for A$12 per night.
So it's cheaper than holidaying in Australia. Usually. Good place to go to get drunk, party, go to the beach, and be a bogan.
Of course there are interesting aspects to holidaying in Bali. Like how they put methanol in the booze. It kills a few tourists but it increases the profit margins. So the authorities pretend it's not a problem. And the cops are all 100% bent.
At the other end of the scale there are luxury resorts that attract tourists from all around the world.
-
If I'm going that far I might as well go to Australia and see some of you lot and encumber you with my gargantuan blubber. Australia has to let me in first though, and you might advise them to turn me away at the border.

So it's basically like I said - an Aussie Tenerife.
As for us - I can get a flight to Tenerife for £72.50 (US$92.30; €82.30; AU$130) per person. Hotels are not cheap, we're talking £60 (US$76.30; €67.30; AU$105.60) for a double room. Costs whilst you're out are less than in the UK - a beer is about 50%-60% the cost of the UK.
-
Okay, so flights are a bit more expensive but hotels are cheaper in Bali. Overall Bali is cheaper.
I would strongly recommend against drinking anything other than beer in Bali. Or duty free booze that you bought yourself.
-
What's the local grog? The other thing is that Spain is not Muslim whereas Indonesia is.
I'm not sure what the state of play is on food though. If you've been to Spain maybe you can advise?

The beer may give you a bit of an upset stomach but the methanol induced spirits may literally blind you. Taste okay when you are drunk and it is watered down with mixers.
-

What Al said. The local grog is a traditional "palm wine" which smells a bit like petrol but won't kill you, but isn't very strong. So they add methanol to it to make it taste stronger for the tourist trade.
It don't matter how drunk I am, that sh1t tastes like a failed chemical experiment to me. It does some serious damage to tourists on a regular basis and kills a few as well. The authorities turn a blind eye (no pun intended) to the practice.
And yes, it's Indonesia. But it's Bali, and Islam didn't quite make it that far East. The dominant religions are Buddhism and Hinduism, which were the dominant religions throughout the region prior to the adoption of Islam.
Indonesian culture is traditionally very tolerant, but that is changing with more hard-line interpretations of Islam gaining ground. Some of that is being imposed on Bali, unfortunately.
In terms of food, it's not very Spanish. You can get western food or you can get Indonesian food. "Bali belly" is the common name for the food poisoning that many people come down with in Bali. Sometimes with street food the food itself is fresh and properly cooked but the plates and utensils are wiped with a filthy cloth and that is why you get sick. Bringing your own utensils or using disposable containers and utensils is always a good idea.
-
There is a microbrewery in Bali. I was thinking that, what with the culture being Buddhist and Hinduist, that it would be alright. What I meant with regard to Spanish food is... what's the better one? I'd be all up for Indonesian food. I think going to the Netherlands would be easier though if I wanted that kind of food. There are many Indonesian restaurants in the Netherlands. Although, having said that, not been.

Bringing your own utensils or using disposable containers and utensils is always a good idea.
Bring a knork. It'll work.

It don't matter how drunk I am, that sh1t tastes like a failed chemical experiment to me. It does some serious damage to tourists on a regular basis and kills a few as well. The authorities turn a blind eye (no pun intended) to the practice.
Nasty. Why drink it? In the Canary Islands, fake booze is only a problem with clubs using cheap spirits I'm told. If you drink in a normal bar, a pint is €2.50 and often far less than that. Good stuff, everyone goes home happy.
Indonesian culture is traditionally very tolerant, but that is changing with more hard-line interpretations of Islam gaining ground. Some of that is being imposed on Bali, unfortunately.
That's the country that throws an eppy at their religion being insulted, mainly because he was unfortunate enough (to them) to be born a Christian.

Why drink it? Well some people like to drink alcohol. Go to a bar and that bottle of top-shelf scotch is more likely than not to contain a fair whack of methanol that could potentially kill you. In Thailand they might refill that bottle of Bombay Sapphire gin on the top shelf with a cheap local version that costs a quarter as much and tastes like crap... And I've heard that the "recipe" for Jack Daniels is 3 parts SangSom (cheap local whisky) and one part Red Bull. But that won't kill you.
Stick to beer, if you can drink it, and you might have an epic chunder and a stonking hangover but you'll probably live.

Or you could do yourself a favour and go to Storm. It's meant to be OK beer and better than Bintang or whatever they think's beer there. I'd imagine it's a gassy hell. It's only 4.7% - what a waste of time. I was expecting something stronger.

Or you could skip those 3rd world shitholes and vacation in Central Oregon where we have 35 breweries, a few wineries and a distillery. And that's just the local stuff! :glug:
And some of our beers are truly world class.

Oregon happens to be about the size of the UK. Another plus.

It's not like it's an island or something.
The California border is about a 2 hour drive from here and the Washington border is just over an hour and a half.
There's plenty to do here if you like the outdoors. If you don't like the outdoors there's always a fuckton of beer to drink.

Where's the place to be in Oregon then? Could fly into Las Vegas from Manchester I suppose.
-
Personally, I like it where I live because we're centrally located and there's plenty to do here.
If you want something different, Springfield, Eugene and the Willamette valley are just an hour and a half trip over the Cascade mountains. Portland is about a 2 hour drive up Hwy 26. If you want to see the coast, that's about a 3 hour drive.
We also have a commercial airport here in Redmond. There are direct flights from Las Vegas to Redmond.

You'll know about it if I come. You won't know what hit you.
Really though, I'd be polite and subdued. I like a couple of beers and a look about the place.

Pfft...everything 'worth doing' that's not right where you are is closer to here.
