Title: AFN: down the rabbit hole?
Post by: Yuri Bezmenov on August 14, 2014, 06:03:25 PM
To me, AFN seems to have become a haven for overly sensitive Leftist types. They seem to mave become the Atheism+ of the Autistic Community.

For those of you not familiar, its the professional victim crowd, riding on the Ship of Fools, headed towards the Island of Misfit Toys to live happily ever after.

¿Por qué el infierno ¿te importa?

Because professional victimhood is something the Autistic community needs to purge itself of.

A handful of those types have made a home at AFN and no one calls them on their crap.

I disagree. The overly sensitive type tend to be non-productive, and they thrive on the good will of others and their pity. I'm very much like the pity parties to stop. No more haven, time to grow up.

Once read someone say this site was intended to be a counterpart to the haven at WP not necessarily the opposite, and it seems appropriate to view it that way, a haven for those who communicate in a manner not accepted other places. Havens are about feelings; it's hard to tell people they feel wrong. If the members there find it a soft spot in their day, then good for them. Jack will be here.

^ROFL

if I remember correctly you were whining cos the folks at ASD wouldnt let you play with them.

I think I still have the PM's from you

You are also confusing over-sensitive with people being friends and sharing with one another

Just because you didnt fit in with the members there, no sense in putting them down.

Some people that have heard of you, still like you there

I drop by AFN occasionally.

Many of the members lean toward the left politically. As intelligent and thoughtful people often do.

I see plenty of robust debate. If you post bollocks you get called on it. Politely.

The ability to debate politely is more important in my experience than the ability to debate impolitely.

Most of the senior members there have jobs. Some struggle, as is the case with many autistics. If AFN did not have members who struggle, it would not be representative of the reality that autistics face IRL.

Well I'd not fit in there that is for sure  :asthing: I do believe the other term for molly codling is co-dependency just net form...

I do believe there are those that wish to stay 'stuck' and those that wish to become unstuck if that makes sense so it has it's legitimacy for a season if that makes sense...

There is such a thing as mess happening to us (it has happened to all of us regardless of NT or ASD) it is how we grow and move on gain tools and choosing to reach out for help in that sense I think it might have it's place...beyond that as I said there is a season in our lives when we need help, nor can I judge because I was there for a long while and still need help...

The difference has been in not being afraid to ask for help and not stopping when doors smack shut in my face this actually became a problem for me when some doors were meant to be closed and I couldn't get an outside outlook that was balanced until I got out of it and saw the shut door was shut for my good metaphorically speaking

I don't pass judgment at all, I was there and then some...I chose not to stay there however and grow, while others can't or won't...can't bring change until that person wants it for themselves, that's a fact jack...

Just how this Hannah sees it...

Scrap needs to be more specific about where they hid the shit.

Vague allegations are not enough, proof is wanted.

I think what you are saying Scrap is that the site is drawing a specific type of poster.
That is fine. Niche site for a certain kind of member. It was not hiding this from the get go.
If you are the type of person that finds this site fits in with your values and sensibilities....then have at it.
I don't think it suits you, and nor do I think many members here or on other sites would fit. But that niche percentage that they are looking for will probably be very well placed there.

They tend to focus on details, small areas of interest, rather than trying to do it all. If your membership consists of a dozen active members, it follows that the forum will focus on a select few topics matching the interests of the membership.

Genesis, just so you know (not that it particularly matters) my use of the term is not derisive.
It is saying that the site is what is. It is about as neutral as saying that it is an ASD site.

Or if the majority was some kind of Pasta Worshiping Occult its a niche?

I2 is a niche, it fits the spazzes that can deal with I2, and those who thrive in that.

A site for new born mothers with inverted nipples wanting to breastfeed is a niche for those women. Not all women with inverted nipples will feel at home there, but the place will be catering a specific group.

AFN caters different needs than I2 does. There is an overlap in members, but the overall tendency of the sites is that different that not all members of AFN will be able to feel at home here, and not all the members of I2 will be able to feel at home at AFN. (Would be quite disastrous for both if the memberships were exchanged)

A shop aimed at frilly lace caters a niche market. A shop selling expensive sound equipment caters a niche market too.

There is no judgement in the word niche. Only saying it is not a "for all" supermarket format.

Exactly.
AFN imported the values of AFF over. AFF in itself was a niche site.
It does not mean AFF was a "bad" site. I think personally that it had a batshit crazy co-founder and THAT is what its big problem was.

Looking back at it (even before my time there) the site had a few more problems than her but she was one of the problems that caused it's destruction.

I prefer AFN over AFF. It's a lot more supportive. I do remember that there was a member on AFF who basically trolled the support section, yet I was the one who was cautioned by her and when doing the "thank you" on their site, the troll was mentioned.

Fuck it. It's in the past. I don't like drama, hence why I'm not giving names but most of you who were on AFF in it's final days probably know who I'm talking about.
