Title: Okay, yeah. One last thread.
Post by: midlifeaspie on December 06, 2011, 09:53:51 AM
Just wanted to share that I was accepted into my backup law school yesterday.  Still waiting on my first choice, but the question of whether or not I will be pursuing a legal education is now answered.

I don't know why I am sharing this here.  I guess I don't think this particular topic can devolve into dramatic statements and callouts over minutiae, but you all have a chance to prove me wrong.   :GA:

Good luck.

Hope that in a few days you'll have the difficult task of making a choice where to go.

And, happy awaiting for the little one too.

Lots of people express that sentiment. I don't buy it. The 6th amendment augments the 5th amendment to a huge degree. Of course if you want to put your life and liberty where your mouth is you could elect to represent yourself in court if you are ever charged with a felony.

In Stalin's USSR there were not any pesty lawyers giving any real counterpoint to government accusations.

People who bash lawyers tend to stop if they are ever charged with a crime or if they need the services of an attorney for some other reason.  Personally, I think they're great.

Lawyers are a necessary evil. In a perfect world,  our legal system would be easy enough for an average person to navigate without the need of a professional lawyer.

Since that's probably not possible, the next best thing would be to have a socialized legal system which would remove the pornographic profits that are made off of people's legal entanglements. Many Lawyers are so narcissistic that they don't need the profit motive to do a good job, feeding their egos is all that they need to be motivated.

That's only true of some lawyers.

We had two lawyers helping us with our daughter's school situation and I would say that it is not true for them.  I also have a close friend who is a lawyer and it is not true for him.  If anything, they are very geared to finding out what it is that others want, so they can be effective negotiators for their clients.

Also, you seem to think that all lawyers are wealthy.  Some are while others aren't.

As a state auditor for Louisiana I audited both the parish District Attorney and the parish Indigent Defender Board the same year.  Yep, those guys (both sides) were the epitome of narcissism.

I never said that. I was making a point about removing the exorbitant amount they charge. Many lawyers charge $400+ per hour.

I have no idea.  My experience so far is in insurance law.

I would love to work for a non-profit like the ACLU, but by the time I graduate I will owe $140,000 in student loans and non-profits can't pay a living wage when you have that much debt.  This is why lawyers are expensive.

So you would be paying about $1600 a month in student loan payments when you graduate?

The only area of law I'd be interested in is property law/conveyancing, but that doesn't pay much more than I'm getting now, probably because it's the area of law that's the least stressful (as opposed to family law and criminal law etc).

Most politicians were lawyers, true fact.

3 years if I move to the sticks and go with the full-time day program, in which case I have to quit my job and try and figure out how to raise 2 kids and go to school full time on about 1/5th of my current salary.  The ABA does not allow first year law students in full-time programs to work.  No money but lots of time with my kids.

4 years if I stay where I am and do the part-time evening program while maintaining my job.  Decent money to live on and I see my kids in passing for 4 years.

Haven't made up my mind yet.

I was accepted into my first choice as well just before Christmas.  Was given a $15,000 grant, but won't have scholarship info until March, which is bullshit as my second choice already granted me $12,000 in scholarships taking the total tuition down to just over $30,000.  My first choice needs to come in with $35,000 in scholarships to match price, but I doubt that will happen and there is more to the decision than price.

Yes, price aside how much difference is the choice of schools likely to affect employment prospects and earning potential? 5 to 8 extra years of paying off the additional schooling costs will be time lost in funding retirement.
