Title: Should Scrapheap buy a Yamaha XS 650??
Post by: Scrapheap on July 25, 2011, 01:33:13 PM
I've been obsesing over bikes that need as little maintanence as possible and/or are easy to maintain on your own.

Lately I'm obsessing over the Yamaha XS 650 because it only has 2 carbs, and is easy to work on. Another benefit is that it is one of the few street bikes with a kick starter. So if your battery or starter dies, you can still get the bike started to escape the Zombies.

Anyways, here's one that I found for sale in Oakland (about a 5 hour drive from here).

If I go up to buy it, it would be real cool to see PPK up there. He hasn't been active lately, so is there somebody here who can contact him?? It would also be cool if PPK could look at it first for me before I drive 5 hours.

I used to have a Marine Corps buddy who lived in the Bay area, but he moved.  :'(

Seriously, you only go around once. It looks like it's in pretty nice shape too. 8)

Yes and ride it often!

If it floats your boat - go for it!

Incidentally,  do people name their bikes like they do trucks?

Shouldn't it have a shaft drive?

You should buy  the bike you took a picture of in Anaheim or as you know it as, Lil Vietnam. What are you, too pussy to go to Oakland by yourself?  For someone that talks as much shit as you do, Oakland should be no worry for you.

I like the green color too.  :)

$1000 is as cheap as I've seen one that wasn't a total POS.

This one is fairly original too. Most people chop these up into Choppers, Bobbers and Cafe Bikes.

Your research is very poor butcofe, I don't recall ever taking a pic of a bike in Anaheim, and that area isn't called Lil Vietnam, that area is in a different city in Orange County.

I've been to Oakland before. It's largely a nigger ghetto. I have no fear of going there, as it will be daytime. I wouldn't go there at night though.

I'm beginning to think this guy is jerking me around. He keeps insisting that there's no back fees at the DMV, but he wont give me a plate # or VIN # to confirm with the DMV that there's no back fees.

Oh, well, I found a simmilar XS 650 on ebay in Lancaster (that's about 2 hours less of a drive).

Green was unique to 78' bikes AFAIK.

Throughout the years, they were mostly red or black.

Did you buy the bike?

No, got out-bid by someone with deeper pockets than me.  :-\

The one for sale up in Oakland turned out to have $572 in back fees at the DMV.  :(

I'll keep looking for my vintage Cafe Racer project bike.  8)

There's been a new development.

The owner of the bike on ebay has emailed me saying that the high bidder hasn't responded to his emails of phone number yet. Since I was the second highest bidder, he says he'll sell me the bike if the auction winner doesn't contatct him.  8)

Looks like I might have my cafe racer after all.  :2thumbsup:

Well, I think I've finally found my bike.

It's a 78' with 13,000 miles on it.

It's owned by a guy who seems quite knowledgeable about the XS 650 and he's asking $1600.

The thing that sucks is that it's up in the Stockton area, 5 hours drive from here. :tantrum:

I once drove from Alabama to Texas with my mother in my little brother's pickup truck to take a used tail light assembly from a junkyard to our brother and bring back a motorcycle from that brother to our little brother.  I took along a pistol for protection and it was a fun trip.

I doubt he's a scammer, he seems pretty straightforward and has obviously (from talking to him) owned several of these bikes.

He doesn't seem like he's trying to screw with the price, unlike the other guy in Lancaster, and is asking slightly below Kelly Blue Book value.

I just think these parallel twin bikes make the coolest vintage racers.

I'd get a Norton 850 Commando or Triumph Bonneville, but I can't afford one, and the parts are hard to find.

I can make this bike look like it's ready to race the 1969 24 hours of Daytona amd do it for half what a British bike would cost.  8)

OK, here's the bike that I ended up scoring for $1,000. Had to drive over 300 miles to pick it up though.  :( It sat in a motorcylce repair shop for over 25 years and has less than 13,000 miles on it. A true "barn find".  8)

As you can see from the handlebars, this is the Cruiser model (called "Special"), but the reason I bought it, if you look at the rear wheel, is that it has rear disc brakes. A rarity on the XS 650. It also has provisions for twin front discs which would give it awesome stopping power, a necessity for racing use.  8)

So all it needs is a different seat, different handlebars, different wheels (spoke wheels that are lighter) a race fairing and a paint job.

I also plan to give the engine a big bore kit. I found a 750cc kit for sale, but I hear rumor that 900cc kits exist and I'd go for one of those.  8)

It looks a bit ugly now, but it will be a kick-ass Cafe Racer here in a few months.  :headbang2:

BTW, thanks to PPK for taking the picture.

It's so the girls could get dirty.

What isn't?  I hate that America no longer rewards merit of any kind.

That's why we're headed downhill.

It's about who is sucking whose cock and not about who is actually making things happen.

Easy solution....suck cock.

I have an overwhelming inability to do that, both figuratively and literally.

BTW, I don't consider working on bikes in my garage to be "doomed".

If i won the lottery, I'd probably be doing the same thing.

Hopefully. You would hire a crew and pay them a fair wage.

I'd hire people and pay them a fair wage, just not to work on motorcycles.  :elvis:

Oh myyyyyyyy.

That would work much better on  Hardly Harley.

Their engines vibrate a lot more.  ::)

I think the vibrator would have to do with the shocks and suspension

That would be painfull, if you hit a big bump.

I think it would be better to install a fleshlight on the gas tank.

But seriously, people shouldn't buy Harleys.

It would be better if people bought Jap bikes made in the US.  8)

the inlne 4 cylinder is so far superior to the 45deg V-twin.   :facepalm2:

BTW, I'm headed up to Cayucos today to buy another motorcycle.

I found a 1985 Honda Nighthawk CB650SC for sale for $200.

It needs a bit of work, but it's all there.

If all else fails, I can part it out and make that much money for the parts on ebay.   8)
