Title: Auctions
Post by: Parts on May 23, 2011, 10:05:19 AM
Well that was a very strange experience I had never been to one before though people are surprised when I tell them.  Things went for outrageous prices both high and low and some stuff didn't even bring a bid.  The guns and fly fishing equipment went very high as expected.  There was a lot of very nice antiques including some  early American pewter and glass that was 200 years old that went for $2 and people bought the vases that come from the florist with flowers for $20  :dunno:  People paid big bucks for absolute crap as things worth hundreds and a few in the thousands went for peanuts.  People never cease to amaze me.  At the end of the day there was still a lot of stuff left some of which was not bid on for understandable reasons as it was somewhat specialized but other stuff I could just not understand.  There was a gun safe it sold for a few hundred dollars  but nobody took it away and no arrangements were made and we have no idea who bought it :zombiefuck:  My brother even  has enough stuff left to stay open till he has to move.  i will get what I can take of the leftovers but so muck is just being left with the store it's unbelievable.  Anyone else vere dealt with anything like this or even been to auctions?  They say it's normal but it's kinda fucked up as far as i can see

Yeah i been to a few auctions.  Similar experience but no so extreme.  Although, not last xmas, but the xmas before i went to one in a pub and got
ripped off with a load of other people -  we all bought digital camera's,  really cheap, a chinese make,  but when i got home - opened the box and
it was like a kiddies camera - cheap plastic etc  lol  i am a fuckwit

Police auctions are meant to be really good, and i have picked up a couple of decent motors at the car auctions.

It's very hit and miss i think :zoinks:

I don't like auctions. They are too loud and keeping up with price changes is made deliberately difficult. I used to like flea markets but have not seen a decent one in my area of N. California for a while.

I have a local company that does online auctions that I am constantly using.  Lots of estate sales and Chapter 13 liquidations.  Everything from the food in the cupboards to the cars in the garage.  Everything is cataloged and photographed and placed online for 10-30 days, and several viewing days are scheduled where one can go to the location and actually examine at the items.  Other than that, it runs just like Ebay.  It's great fun.

One thing I'm certain of. People are weird. :zombiefuck:

I've noticed the tide turning somewhat on antiques though, I have a carnival vase that 2 years ago would have brought $75 or more on Ebay, now if I listed it, I'd be lucky to get $20. A box full of mint condition 78's from the big band era are basically worthless, except maybe for target practice.

Hunting, Fishing, & tools are always in demand it seems, toys and advertising junk do fairly well. I'm constantly looking crap up and it's amazing...the stuff you're ready to toss is usually the crap bringing in the most money somedays.

Minus the auction tents that looks like my version of heaven.

Beautiful area.

My version of it too.  It was my brothers too but times got slow and his taxes were $6000 a year over a thousand more than mine with no services to speak of

Holy crap.  :o

That doesn't give a small business much of a fighting chance.  :P

No it doesn't he was active in the local business community for awhile also and says they aren't really interested in getting more people to go up there but think that prisons and assisted living facilities are preferred to getting a Casino because they would not cause an large  influx of people.  He feels it's mainly that they don't want blacks or Hispanics coming into the area
