to get a civil partnership? ???
-
Not in Sweden. :viking:
-
I don't understand any of it. Politicians made the rules since when does anything they do make sense
-
to get a civil partnership? ???
Because if the couple were of the opposite sex, they could get a marriage license.
-
In Sweden we have something called "borgerlig vigsel"~"civil wedding" in the city hall. It existed long before gay marriage, which became legal just a few years ago.
-

So?
-
What's the difference between the two?
-
There is actually no practical point with marriage, at least not here. Back when my grandparents married, you got things like "widow pension" and "common taxation" but not anymore.
-
What's the difference between the two?
Different names
Marriage has religious/sexist connotations
There should be civil marriage for everyone regardless of sex, or there should be neither
-
Different names
'What's in a name? that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.'

Maybe it's just a difference of location. Here people can be married outside of a church with a justice of the peace, which many do, so no real religious connotation. Not sure what you mean by the sexist part. Seems civil partnerships could be considered quite the triumph for the gay community and to give to everyone would minimize it's poignance, or at the very least be rude, because like you say it only has a different name. If the name has no meaning, then it has no meaning.
-
It's "seperate but equal"
And the name is important as it differentiates between sex, something which should be private. Why should it be anyone else's business what sex me or my partner are?
The religious/sexist part was about the history of it. The term "marriage" implies religion and sexism to me
-
Your point is a good one. These things have an evolutionary quality to them though. Your country is far ahead of most.
-
It is. And I'm glad of that. I don't see why we needed to make an extra thing just for same sex couples though. It would have made much more sense to just make civil marriage available for couples of any sex, without forcing them to broadcast it to the world
-
to get a civil partnership? ???
Does the law actually state that? Post a link to the law as written.
-
yeah you have to be 2 females or 2 males for a civil partnership. there was a case recently where a strraight couple wanted to get one but werent aable to
will find the law later, got a headache and cant be arsed :dunno:

It may very well be that way some day, but the glass is still half full for same sex partners in the UK.

Civil partnerships in the United Kingdom, granted under the Civil Partnership Act 2004, are a very basic idea that will fly right over Pentagram's head because he is a moron who can't be arsed to read a simple article.

You're fat, lazy, and lonely, so I won't criticize you for looking at your heterosexuality as the silver lining of your life. At least the female pigs will know the joy of your devotion.

We have the "burgerlijk huwelijk", "civil wedding". Open for gay and straight relationships.
And we have "geregistreerd partnerschap", "Civil Partnership". Open for gay and straight partners.
And, if you want to do it different, you can also go to a Notary public to arrange the legal matters of living with a partner, regardless of genders.

to get a civil partnership? ???
hmm, i dont know, cause laws are strange
Here in Pennsylvania you have a civil "common law" marriage if you live together more than 7 years.
-
Personally I think legal marriage should be banned altogether, even civil partnerships.
Why can't couples just stay together and just act like they're married? :dunno:
-
Agreed.

Lack of tax benefits and wedding gifts? :zoinks:
-
i agree too. now. :)
I was legally married to someone I never lived with, and had more rights than people who live together for years.
It's all fuckotry. Just live like you want to live.
-
I'LLDOWHATEVERI FEEEL LIKEIWANNADO GOD
-
I agree that marriage is a load of bullshit. But at the same time it's a quick and easy way of getting all the legal protection (and yes financial benefits too lol) that comes with it.
-

Because they want to legally change the relation to their family. When they die, they don't want family to kick out the remaining partner out of the house, don't want to leave the remaining partner bereft of half of the goods.
It is legal security people seek. Can't see how gender should make any difference in the type of legal security you seek for a relationship.
-
:agreed:
I see no need for marriage when it is just about "love" and "weddings" etc etc
But the legal stuff definitely serves a purpose
-

The problem is that once you go in, it's a pain in the arse to get out. It's almost like selling the soul to the devil just to be rich or something.

you have to fucking idea how hard it is to get out of a marriage. If one party doesnt want to cooperate, it takes forever and ever. Oh, and it fucks with your credit too. :)
Yeah, I think the rules should be reviewed, to say the least.
-
to get a civil partnership? ???
Because the church doesn't allow homosexual marriages (the official definition is a holy matromony between a man and women) so civil partnership was made as a comprimise. In a civil wedding you can't use any religious terminology in your vows for this reason.
I personally find this homophobic... ;_;
-
But that's no reason why straight people shouldn't be able to get civil partnerships as well
What sex someone is should be no one's business whatsoever if they're getting a legal marriage

Here the main church was blessing and celebrating gay relationships before the state was ready to have civil partnership, let alone marriage for gay people.
So, church doesn't have to be a reason.
Gay marriage is an option for over 10 years now in the Netherlands.
-
Also a marriage which is recognised by the state should have absolutely NO religious connotations at all
-

When I was a child, back in the 1970s, we had a guest celebrant at Mass once, a monsignor who talked about the "hippie"
weddings being chosen by Catholic youth who should have known better because after all they'd been raised in the Church!
I still remember the contempt with which he said "Barefoot in the backyard, with a justice of the peace!"

I got married by a celebrant in the backyard. Wasn't barefoot though. :D

Why worry about it Soph? You have been very clear in other threads that you are quite satisfied to have others pass laws on your behalf so you can deal with other things, possibly ice lollies and chips and gravy. Just trust those in power to have your best interest at heart.

Honestly? Yes. I don't want to vote on every single law the govt wants to pass. I actually have other thigns I want to do with my life
Did I read that wrong?
-
Nope. I don't see how that equates to me not giving a shit about any political matters however
