im writing a chapter where someone undergoes a sci-fi type of heart surgery, but i wanna keep the basics realistic.
i got the ekg machine, i got blood and water, or would that be plasma?
what do they do to get to the heart, concerning ribs and sternum?

Shame, I hoped this thread was looking for people into trying surgery etc. on someoneelse right now.

My daughter had open heart surgery when she was a baby.
They cut through the middle of the sternum, then they used a rib spreader to get to her heart.
If it's open heart surgery, they would need a heart-lung machine and they would use donated blood to prime the pump.
Here's a link to a video of open heart surgery for coronary artery bypass, if it helps:

When I had my heart attack they never operated but they did strap me up overnight to a heart monitor and feed me saline through a drip and I was already dosed up on morphine. In the morning I had to walk the saline drip and heart monitor to the phone and call work to explain I was not coming in and my boss was not really listening to what I was saying she just kept cutting me off and saying "Did you just hear that noise? The ping? Is that on my end of the line or yours?....Oh there it goes again?...Did you hear it?" I finally got to telling her that it was indeed on my end and it was the irritating little ping that alerted us that my heart was still working and were it not that I would be dead. Why? I had a heart attack last night and was in hospital and was not coming in to work tomorrow or the next day and likely not for a week. After a night like that I could have comfortably straggled her without remorse and been acquitted on grounds of temporary insanity.

Yes I had to cut her off in mid-stream and explain and on explaining what it was she exclaimed "Yes it is really loud. I can hear it. Its it really loud there too?" Yes it was loud enough to help keep me up all night and I did not need to go into the merits of the loud beepy fucking thing with her and would up the phone call and trundled back to bed and did my best to look fit and peppy so I could sign myself out. :P I hate hospitals.

yes. ive never stayed at hospitals, but even short visits creep me out.
well, in the end i did write a little heart surgery chapter.
a (very special) female character needs a little piece of aparatus attached, so
i decided to ekg her up, heart lung, and added my own "personal twist" to getting through the sternum, since - in my setting - she allready has a piece of machinery lodged through it:
i envisioned a little tong-thing, that would break lose each rib from the sternum itself, and lift the sternum right off, as a lid
in the spirit of the "touch-of-horror" i incude, she insisted on no anaesthetics, insteading getting a light sedative through a mask, w a nurse further calming her
in the end the sternum is _glued_ back on to the ribs, and the skin is stitched back in place :]

The poor bloke is suffering from triphallia.
-
^What is that? My sister used to have the Operation game.
-
Triphallia is having three penises. He has two blue ones, and one red one. Doesn't look healthy to me.
(I made up the word triphallia, diphallia does exist though)

Oh I just noticed that it's a clock.
So three is right.
