there comes a day, when my entire harddisk is occupied by these fucking updates, and nothing else....
ive just deleted tons of shit, for some disk space freeing, for a big download,
and since i hate windows update ive delayed it, and now i got a fucking quarter of a gig worth of goddamn motherfucking updates...
-
AutoPatcher (http://www.autopatcher.com/) is your friend.
-
oh, no, my beef w the updates is the sheer size of them
there has to be... idunno how much... but at least over a gigabyte of update stuff :S
and theyre never gonna stop, meaning, theoretically, 10 years from now, youll have tens of gigs of only windows update folders :(
plus they keep leaving these "4gvngn7gkd0hr9vgiur5hmgo0d3rmhge2rvmth6eirm0ghire6oghem3hriuv5griu0vg"-folders on my C :( wtf :(

Yeah you can kill those folders after the updates are finished, but what you are mainly complaining about is the updates setup files and backup files. You can get programs that will delete all that shit if you want.
-
I don't understand the updates either.
And I have "Just install after questioning me", but nevertheless it sometimes installs them anyway. :eyebrow:
-
Updates are mostly to plug newly found security holes.
-
i also love the restart REMINDER every 15 minutes
"i told you you have to restart. do you want to restart?
[yes] [NO!!!! LEAVE ME ALLONE!!!]"
-
That's why I pick a time when I don't mind doing a restart.
-
Or put updates to "check but not download", like I do. That way I can pick on what I want updated.

I used to do that, but lately I've had it set to download and I pick the time to update. I got sick of waiting for them to download. I know you can just go to Microsoft Update to speed it up though.
-
I download and update everything automatically on a schedule. I have it do that shit while I sleep.
You might want to look into putting additional HDs in your PC or get an external for data storage. I try to just have the OS and applications on my main HD.

i actually got an extra one in an old computer, but im too lazy to move it over.
but i still think its directly unpolite of them to expect people to download litterally gigabytes of updates...
-
They don't expect you, because you can easily disable automatic downloading.

UhM ... LoL?

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_hotfix_backup.htm
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/slim
(Make sure Hotfix Unistallers is ticked under Advanced)
[Start]->[All Programs]->[Accessories]->[System Tools]->[Disk Cleanup]->[More Options]->[System Restore]->[Clean up]
Also, open a Windows Explorer window to %TEMP% and delete all the shit there.
Doing all that should get you some disk space back.
-
yeah, spent all yesterday clearing space, and all day scandisking over and over.
im readying for gta 4 *blush*
it is time! =]

:indeed:
The entire update thing is very easy to configure. If you want to use the most used OS, then you are going to have to deal with updates. The most used OS (or any software) will be hacked to shit in comparison to its less used brethren. What is the point in writing an virus, finding an exploit in, or doing anything involving that type of work in regards to something that is less than 10% of the userbase (market share)? It is more worth it for hackers to fuck with Windows users, because they can fuck over more people than they could if they were wasting their time trying to fuck over the users of other less used OSes. The more popular something is, the more haters it gets.

Which leaves the obvious question, would Macs be as vulnerable and easy to hack as PCs, if the market share was a split 50-50? Or would one still have an advantage?

Macs run off UNIX. People have been able to hack and fuck up UNIX based OSes in the past. I don't see why Macs and any other OS platform would have a security advantage over the other. Anything can be reverse engineered. I don't see a 50/50 split happening. 50/30/20 or whatever. There could be 3 or 4 viable OS platforms for people to choose from, problem is that only one of them would have enough software programmed for it to get the most users.
You don't see people giving a shit about making games for Mac or Linux like they do for Windows, that is because the userbase for Windows is so much larger. If 50 percent of the people used Macs, then you might see a split that is closer to what is happening development wise with videogame consoles.

I don't think it makes much sense for an operating system to take up 6 GB, much less 60 GB or more! Gah!
But half of my hard drive space is either free or unallocated, so I don't really have anything to complain about... Yet! ::)

You need to pirate more shit and fill up multiple 1TB external drives full of shit to be complaining omg.

It'll depend, just because it's 50/50 does not mean both will be attacked equally. If Macs had the market share that current Windows PCs do however, they will have the same problem with viruses and such.
However, from what I've seen, Apple seems to be turning out to be the worst company. No other company can blatantly rip off earlier products and claim they're new and revolutionary like Apple. :orly:
