Who here uses Facebook? My sisters all use it and so does GA.
I am doing an assignment now, writing a report on an article, "Popularity fuels disclosure on Facebook." Do any of you think this is true? I find it amazing that a lot of people worry about security yet still post their full names and other personal details on Facebook.
-
I'm on there, but have it set so only friends can see my profile.
-
I have it to watch other people, not to let them watch me. Plus I have it on high security.
-
I only have a minimal presence there, no photo just a spot for people who I went to collage with to get an email

I find it amazing too.
Some people post their whole lives on Facebook, which would make it very easy for someone to stalk them.

I don't put my bank details on it - but I would be easy to stalk by anyone at my university or one of the 500 and some people on my friend lists. The thing is, having friends makes you safer from deviant personalities, plus I could be stalked anyway.
-
Deviant personalities?

:o
I think having 500 people on your friends list makes it more likely that one of them could be that "deviant personality" you fear.
-
I think most people these days just add everyone they ever knew. I mean, I don't speak to 3/4 of the people on my friends list. Nor do I like most of them particularly.
-
I don't have it set to high security, but then thankfully I also have an extremely common name, like Jane Smith. So if anyone's wanting to find me specifically, they'll have to hunt through all the other same names as mine. 8)
I'm not particularly active either. I use it more to keep up with a small handful of friends. And I only have people on my friends list who I know (either good online friends or people irl).
Main thing is never post on FB something you wouldn't want your employer (current or future) to know about you.

I know 500 people irl, the nature of this place is that there are going to be deviant backstabbing personalities about, Facebook or not. But, I unlike you, am not totally paranoid. Shit can happen, accept it.

It's not about paranoia, it's about choosing what you want to reveal about yourself, stalkers or no stalkers. Not everyone's like you, Hadron.

I hide enough about myself already - I cannot afford to hide more. Lets just say I have made the mistake of having an obsession I cannot talk about.

Which is fine and well, and your choice. Just don't assume you know why others choose to be more private than you.

Argh you are one of those people that tells a little bit of the story and no more.
I haven't got a Facebook account. My real name isn't anywhere on the internet. I guess that is one of the reasons why I am ok about posting about myself here.

I've started posting more about myself in relation to my name. Given the field of work I'm going into, my name will end up on the net in relation to my work. I just need to make sure that the personal details I don't want associated with my name stays separate from it.
-
I find Facebook confusing and overwhelming; there are too many things trying to catch my attention when I go there, so I avoid it simply from a user-interface point of view.
-
i have facebook. my real name is known on the internet
-
My real name, address and phone number is known at various places....

I have the common name thing in my favor and uber-security. In general I try to keep my facebook pretty much OK for employers to see, though every now and again I go through and panic and purge. I'm pretty active on FB.

So you haven't left any hints on I2 or anywhere else - I guess that is the main risk of trouble from it...
-
My last name is pretty uncommon, that's why I have my profile set to private.
I figure, if you google someone's name, something is going to come up. I'd rather have the say as far as what comes up on the first page.

No no, people would look in there, it needs to be really really boring... Like hide it in a folder called {BA746A1F} in System32 in the Windows directory (assuming you use windows, which I do, assume and use).

So tempted to grab the phone now, but have no idea what to say. So, will let it be.
Have had enough awkward conversations today.
-
You're safe from me, Soph. I hate phones. :zombiefuck:
-
Phones are evil :zombiefuck: That's why I have three phone numbers :-\
-
Me too, me too. :laugh.
-
i only answer when it's my mum
which is lucky, coz only my mum ever rings me
-
Only have two, will get a third one too, for selective turning them off.
-

I am trying to get rid of one but so many people have the number for work
-
I'm thinking on changing the number of my landline phone. Would make a difference.
-
I use facebook. I have heard people add friends who aren't their friends just for populatirty. I don't do that.
I use it for my online freinds and people from my high school.
-
I guess if we post phone numbers on here we are safe. None of us spazzes likes using the phone. :zoinks:
-
Except for Pea :twitch:
He was more keen to talk on the phone than I was and he's supposed to be the Aspie
-
I've no real problem with phones, just with some people calling/texting me.
-
Mainly to keep in touch with IRL people.
I'm going to delete a bunch of random internet people.
I should stop adding people I don't know... they can add me to myspace. Facebook is for IRL people and good online friends. One guy got my msn details off facebook and added me. Better disable that now actully.
I don't use facebook to meet people and its going to stay that way.
-
I agree with the Facebook. I only add people i know IRL. I find friend requests from people I don't know creepy.
-

seriously.
-
I've opened accounts on a couple or three social-networking sites but never used them. Too many other things to do.
-
I am on facebook.
Just started to use it.
-
I have Facebook and use it everyday. :P Only thing though, it's on private. lol
-
Same here, I don't add anyone on my facebook/myspace unless I know them in real life.
-
Same here, I don't add anyone on my facebook/myspace unless I know them in real life.
Same, all the people on my friends list I have met in rl except one and that person was the reason why I went on Facebook in the first place.
-
I cleansed my Facebook of cunts and people I didn't particularly know well or like. From 210 I went down to 66 8)
-
i have both RL and online people on mine. i don't really make any distinction between the two
-
I only add people I know IRL or get on with well in general. I've also added most of my class in college.
-
I used to have a StalkerBook page, but then I blanked the data fields and deactivated it.
-
i have both RL and online people on mine. i don't really make any distinction between the two
Me too.
People are real to me, no matter how I meet them.
And can be great and bastards, both in 'RL' and on the internet.
-
i have both RL and online people on mine. i don't really make any distinction between the two because im a misanthropic fuck
:indeed:

I hate it when people sneer that online relationships "aren't real." Granted, it's easier to lie from a distance, to someone who can't double-check what you tell him, but look at all the lying and backstabbing that people do to each other IRL. ::)
-
:agreed:
-
I have facebook. I only accept friends request from people I know. I do not take strangers. You can customize your friends too by limiting what they can see on your facebook.
I also have my profile set to private so only friends can see. You can't see anything on my facebook.
I prefer people to tell me who they are when they add me. I always look at their profiles to see who they are when they send me a friends request. My old class mates usually have their profiles open for anyone to view and I can recognize them and I see their name and I accept their friends request.
I have denied friends before because I didn't know who they were. Even their profiles didn't hint it.
-
The thing that gets me is all the requests to join in the games they all play I have no desire but the please plant me a tree or cook this shit keep comming
-

I now hide all reports of games, first thing I do coming on FB is hiding new ones. Iit looks a lot better.
I also left this message on my profile: I am hiding almost all games. Makes this page so much easier on my eyes. So, if you really want to share your fishing or farming results with me, you will have to mail me, to proudly brag about it.
So far, no one has mailed me to proudly brag about their gaming.

I can't trust anyone completely until I've met them in real life. I've seen too much crazy online to do otherwise. As far as backstabbing and lying goes, I haven't had that problem irl since I was in middle school, so I'm good on that front too.

Sorry to hear about the craziness you've encountered online, and glad your real life has gotten better since middle school (mine has too). :)

i hate facebook so much. i have it.
i thought i hated myspace.
but my hatred for facebook is so tremendous, it makes my hatred for myspace seem like perverse love :(

If you block every application, like all the games and quizzes and shit, is gets somewhat okay. If only they would quit with the suggestions for friends and shit.

"you should comment on steins status"

I know now I have become a addict on facebook.
-
Why? I don't really get it.
-
it maKES relationships and social stuff a lot easier for me
also a place to show my pictures and random videos to family/friends
-
A friend of mine was telling me about when he joined. Someone he knew was playing that farmville game or what ever and posted they had 135 paving stones to give away that they didn't need he didn't realize it was a game and called and asked when he could pick them up to expand his patio and got mad at them when they told him it was just a game. He has since blocked all the games
-
I can't see the point with any of the games.
-
Neither can I but to each his own

Facebook is pretty fucking gay, but it can be a useful tool for some things. Mostly destructive things.

Apparently some of my old school friends have Facebook accounts but I have no desire to speak with them. They were the ones who thought they were too good for everyone else at school and are now living in the burbs criticising others. I have only a couple of friends left from school that I've maintained regular contact with and one of them caught them on Facebook the other night being bitchy about him.
I'm a bit pissed off about it actually and would like to put them in their place, but that is exactly the reason why I hate Facebook. Fake people pretending to be fake friends with each other.
I know that's not always the case, for sure and it does have it's place. Two of the girls who are chummy chummy on there hated each other at school, with a passion. So hilarious.

Either they grew up...or everybody else hates them now and they have only each other!
Probably the latter.
I've never gone to any high school reunions and never will...no reason to dredge up the dismal past!

god I wont be goin to any school reunions either lol
primary school was good but secondary school was shite

Apparently some of my old school friends have Facebook accounts but I have no desire to speak with them. They were the ones who thought they were too good for everyone else at school and are now living in the burbs criticising others. I have only a couple of friends left from school that I've maintained regular contact with and one of them caught them on Facebook the other night being bitchy about him.

You forgot the third option, they're now closet lesbians. :toporly:
I mean that could explain a lot, right?

No, just fakey ass kissers, nothing more sinister than that! One used to call the other a whore, and the *whore* used to call the other one a prim and proper virgin. I was friends with both these girls until about 10 years ago. They are basically still in high school with their attitude.

I'd only go to a school reunion if I was successful. I have absolutely no desire otherwise to make people think im just some oddball loser still. Most people rom my school i'm better off not knowing, lets keep it that way. I've declined friend requests from school people who never had anything to do with me, some which even bullied me for OCD rituals I had at high school. How can they honestly expect I want them on my facebook? :duh:

Sounds like my attitude. I don't feel like explaining my apparent failures to a bunch of acquaintances from 25 years ago. There's nothing in it for me. :thumbdn:

Had I graduated I would probably attend one reunion.
After cashing in on some favors owed...I would have the transportation, the designer clothes, & the accessories to pull off a very good snow job on a bunch of little cheerleading bitches that haven't seen me in over 20 some years and live at least a state away from me.
I would probably dine, take a few pictures, and then ride off into the sunset.
Fuck that chance for "renewed friendships", we're talking revenge.

My high school is not on my face book I never want to see these people again except through a scope
Mine is college only

Yeah its not even worth that, most of the girls who thought i was a freak have a whole lot of kids at 25 now.. seems failure to me, what a boring life. I never had problems with the cheerleader type, some were obviously stuck up, but no-one agreed with their issues so it doesn't matter.
There was one very average girl who was really nasty to me who ended up getting pregnant at 16 to some pimply boy who shes now married to, so its just funny imo.
lol the people you hated are probably in the same boat.
Some people however, it doesn't matter how successful you've become, you'll always be scum and a freak. No point worrying about them.

Good point, but I work in food service, so I get free drinks and food every day! :headbang2:

Sounds like your high school years sucked way more than mine did! :thumbdn:
Actually, by high school, people more or less left me alone, which was a nice change from the nastiness of the previous years. :facepalm2:
