Obama as a Nobel Prize laureate? WTF?
-
I know. I literally just finished reading about it. Makes no sense.
-
Two words:
Race card.
-
Barack Obama has won this year's Nobel Peace Price "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples," the annual award's committee announced Friday morning in Oslo. "He has created a new international climate," said their statement.
The selection of the President, 48, is considered a stunning surprise, as his name had not been heard in speculation surrounding the choice of this year's honoree. But, said the committee, "We are awarding Obama for what he has done. Many other people and leaders and nations have to respond in a positive way" to President Obama's diplomacy.
In his nearly 10 months in office, President Obama has appealed for reductions in nuclear arsenals and is seeking to restart peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians. He has also faced challenges in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as from Iran, amid fears Tehran is seeking to build a nuclear weapon.
Thorbjorn Jagland, the chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee and a former prime minister of Norway, told reporters, "We are not awarding the prize for what may happen in the future but for what he has done in the previous year. We would hope this will enhance what he is trying to do."
The only other sitting U.S. Presidents to win the honor were Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. Jimmy Carter's came after he left office.
Obama is humbled by the award, according to the White House.
******************************************************
He's only been on office 10 mos. This time I do have to agree with Shleed. Race card. Yeah, he's attempting to do lots of fabulous things but let's see how successful he is before you award him the prize.
-
yeah seems a bit early
-
It's great PR for the White House so I have to wonder how much it cost them.
-
:indeed:
-
Two words:
Race card.
More like a race deck
-
It's funny to read the comments so far. Most react like I did. I mean, WTF??
-
What did he do, besides put us further into debt by instituting corporate welfare?
-
I like Obama, I just think this was hugely premature.
-
Obama as a Nobel Prize laureate? WTF?
:agreed:
I thought this Saturday Night Live spoof of him was pretty funny and fairly accurate, but apparently The White House was not amused.
http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/clips/obama-address/1163263/
-
i think he's cool
-
I like Obama too but it's too early. I'm pretty sure he's going to change stuff and all that, but c'mon--10 months and a Nobel prize?!?
-
In a way he brought about change just by becoming President. I agree though, a Nobel Prixe is ridiculous so early on.
-
Because if it's going to be like that, I'd like to have mine now.
-
You're not mixed race, you don't count :zoinks:
-
I think my family came from Poland, though, around two hundred years back. Does that count? :orly:
-
Obama's just another US president. Just because he's black does not instantly mean he's great. He'll fuck up sooner or later.
-
I think my family came from Poland, though, around two hundred years back. Does that count? :orly:
It does if they're Polish Jews :toporly:
-

I think they might have been, actually, but I don't know.
-
he's not just another president. he's actually a good one (so far)
i don't care if he's black white or purple though
I like Obama too but it's too early. I'm pretty sure he's going to change stuff and all that, but c'mon--10 months and a Nobel prize?!?
oh i agree about it being way too early
-
It would be more interesting if he was purple. :toporly:
-
purple president sounds cool. he gets my vote
-
Tinky Winky for president :headbang2:
-
I'd vote for him, er, her, er, ... it.
-
See, now if Obama was purple, then there wouldn't be any debate because every time somebody got their knickers in a knot asking why he was awarded the prize, I'd say, "Dude. He's purple." That really does sum it all up. No cause for debate there.
-
Yup. 10 months would be more than enough. ;D
-
I was surprised when I read about it this morning, but it makes sense to me. The Nobel prize has become somewhat of a lifetime achievement award, but it was originally established as an award for those individuals who've made the greatest contributions to humanity in the past year. In the past year, Obama has reversed international opinion regarding the only current global superpower, he's reversed the Bush-era doctrine of preemptive war and reestablished the importance of diplomacy and cooperation in US foreign policy. He's also started a major fight for health care reform, which is critically needed by tens of millions of people in the US, and he's the first black president of the US, which has historical significance and has a present-day impact on international opinion of the US.
Obama hasn't sweated blood and tears in the way that many previous peace prize winners have, but the Nobel prize is for results, not the personal effort from an individual, and as the president of the US, Obama can get results with comparative ease.
-
Translation:
He used the race card and they were too afraid of being accused of being racist, so they decided to be PC and give him one anyway.
-
he used the race card? he seemed pretty surprised by it himself.
-
He's also started a major fight for health care reform, which is critically needed by tens of millions of people in the US,
I know he has started it but I would like to see it reformed and then give him a prize.
-

:agreed:
Apparently Obama must have been nominated soon after he took office.
-
He intends to give the Nobel prize money to charity.
http://detnews.com/article/20091009/NATION/910090410/President-Obama-wins-Nobel-Peace-Prize
President Barack Obama will donate the $1.4 million cash award that comes with the Nobel Peace Prize to charity.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs says it's likely that more than one charity will share the windfall.
Gibbs says the president has yet to decide which charities will benefit from the award, announced early Friday morning.
Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples," the Norwegian Nobel Committee said, citing his outreach to the Muslim world and attempts to curb nuclear proliferation.
The stunning choice made Obama the third sitting U.S. president to win the Nobel Peace Prize and shocked Nobel observers because Obama took office less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline. Obama's name had been mentioned in speculation before the award but many Nobel watchers believed it was too early to award the president....
-
I suppose Peter's got a point, though.
-
The only question is: How many cocks did Obama swallow to get his "peace prize" :squit:
-
Translation:
He used the race card and they were too afraid of being accused of being racist, so they decided to be PC and give him one anyway.
This might be a bit true unfortunately. That makes them more racist imo.
It is way too early in his Presidency to give him awards like a Nobel Peace Prize. He has not ended any wars lol.
-
Obama as a Nobel Prize laureate? WTF?
This is now even more ironic, (almost) 8 years later.

True. I must admit, his manner and articulation won me over. I expected big this and for him to be a good President. If I was American at the time I would have voted him in
-
I think he has been a decent President, from an outsider's POV. Not a Nobel Prize winner, but let's face it, he was always going to be an improvement from the last one.
-

The last one was a pretty low benchmark.
Have you seen how the rest of the world treat him. The Russians, the Chinese, and the Philippines? Not a lot of respect
-

That's a low threshold to meet but as Al pointed out, do you see how the world has no respect for him?? and the US??
-
Not a Nobel Prize winner...
Yes, a Nobel Prize winner, without a single day of peace during his reign.
-

Yes it is interesting. Nobel Prizes used to be something of value.

Sure has. It has become a corrupt institution with no integrity and you see it. I remember people that used to get it and everyone would talk about the choices and how well they were picked. Now they don't talk about it at all.

A lot of the world leaders do not and a lot of the world don't. Absolutely. Not saying they will Hillary or Trump either but at the moment that is a bit of an unknown.
-
That doesn't answer my question. I couldn't figure out whether Pappy was talking about Bush or Obama. I still can't.
-

He is talking about Obama. Odeon introduced Bush as a comparison. Bush Pappy and I have said is worse but that is simply saying Bush is a worse President NOT Obama is good.
-
In that case I want to know where he's getting the info about the world having no respect for Obama.

Philippines the President called him a son of a whore
Farange told him he should never interfere with another country's politcis
Putin called him an ankle biter
Chinese would not roll out the red carpet when he landed at the G20 convention nor would they roll up the stair ramp.

Nice chart. :plus:
Filipino confidence is at 94% though.. ??? That was spring 2015, I wonder if it changed after the 2016 election.
Obama has more support in countries across the world than he does in the USA. :P

The Phillippines is not my idea of a yardstick. It's a bit like being recommended by Boris Johnson. As for the US, I believe his approval ratings are fairly high. I'm pretty sure that means something.

They are and have been for a while however to counter this, the Republicans turn out to vote at higher percentages

No idea. I expect a lot of that has to do with the fact that they have historically been supporters of slavery and such but in the 1960's made a concerted effort to build support with the black and Hispanic community and did very well at doing this.

I wasn't referring to his popularity with everyday people, rather the fact that world leaders think that he is a spineless bitch, which he is.

And there's lots of money to be made on speaking engagements. :2thumbsup:
Bill Clinton apparently has a natural charisma and charm, but his voice? Obama has a very even articulate and easy voice to listen to. He sounds smart and sincere. His speaking style is almost teh polar opposite of Trump. Obama will do very well in speaking engagements.
-
Bill Clinton is a very good speaker, though, and I never thought his voice to be that bad. :-\

He's a lying, mass murdering coward. You simply cannot think rationally because he's a Democrat and he's non white.

I think when US weapons were being used by Israel to massacre Palestinians in 2014, and that spineless piece of shit puppet just came out each day and read his instructed line "Israel has the right to defend itself", was probably his lowest moment. I think Obama lying about the Holocaust was pretty sick too.

Nothing I can say will change your mind. I'd say that to say "Auschwitz" instead of "Buchenwald" is not an unforgivable sin.

Unless it's a white Conservative? Strange how another African American guy said he liberated Auschwitz in Speilberg's documentary hack fest. Just Obama using people's suffering for Holocaust Industry purposes is sick. Especially with all the Palestinian blood on his hands.

Actually. Jewish soldiers raped Arab women during the theft of Palestine in 47-48. Rape isn't exclusive to Muslims. I'm not in favor of flooding the West with rapey 'refugees', but ancient aliens are.

I'm not a killer. But your beloved Israel didn't mind killing Americans when it bombed the USS Liberty ship in 1967. They also planned to blow up Americans and British in 1956, but the terrorist attack was stopped.
