Title: Your musical tastes
Post by: Untermensch on September 26, 2009, 11:13:12 PM
What sort of music you like and what sort of music you dont like, may I ask?

I like Alternative and Indie Rock, stuff like the The Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Muse, Ladyhawke, Radiohead, Kings of Leon, Placebo, The Vines, Netural Milk Hotel, PJ Harvey, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Pearl Jam, some 80's New Wave and also a little Punk and Post-Punk (like The Sex Pistols and Joy Division).

I dislike emo, RnB, Techno, a lot of hip-hop and the more recent pop (like Britney Spears for example).

I'm wearing a shirt with that album cover on it right now. So yeah, I like Joy Division. I have to admit I've grown out of them a bit lately but when I was younger Closer was like my third favorite album out of hundreds that I'd listened to.

These days I'm really drifting out of rock music. I still listen to more experimental and free form stuff, like Fushitsusha, and I still listen to metal.

I've gotten into ambient pretty recently. I discovered Klimek, and I've been listening to old favorites by William Basinski and Tetsuo Inoune often.

I try to listen to classical but I still don't fully understand it. The stuff I like most is from Teiji Ito, Toru Takemitsu, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Arvo Part. I feel like I understand these composers more than most others.

Mostly 60s, 70s and some 80s. Rock, pop, and chart stuff.

Favourite groups are Beatles, Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Doors, The Band, Wings, Deep Purple, Crowded House, Split Enz.

Favourite artists are Billy Joel, Elton John (up to 1983), Janis Joplin, Carole King, Simon & Garfunkel, Barry Ryan, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton.

Rap, r'n'b, house, and all this modern shite aren't worth anything.

Mostly electronic stuff (IDM, Techno Ambient, Musique Concrete and other older forms of electronic from the 40s-70s, Berlin School, Minimalist etc.), post punk, new wave, kraut rock, bit of prog, classical music, some indie and so on.

I'm fairly open really, although I really hate metal/rap/chav choons/silly bubblegum pop/pop punk/emo. I will like music even if it's new, but most of the chart stuff seems crap to me.

I like classical, symphonic metal, heavy metal, instrumentals, anything that's has strength or complexity (as in, like a symphony of instruments, the structure of how it progresses, and vocals when listening to classical music) to it. My favourite band is Epica because I love the combined classical and metal style.

Anything that lacks both qualities of strength and complexity I usually don't like.

You're like the millions of kids who try so hard to be different that they all end up the same

I'm not following a trend either. I heard some of their songs and liked them, so I listen to them. I don't listen to them just because other people do. Disliking something just because it's popular is lame. I listen to whatever I like, whether it's popular or unpopular

I don't like a lot of music these days because I actually don't like it, not because it's trendy.

Did I say, I liked the music?  No.  I'm not trying hard to dislike it.  "Sex on fire"  is a pretty good song, but then their second single was suicidal.  And I hate the killers, cause all their songs sound the same, so do Oasis's.  The whole trend thing just adds extra annoyance.  I probably like stuff that is trendy, too.  I like Lily Allen and Lady Gaga.  Liked the Libertines, some Razorlight.  Madonna should retire.  A lot of modern days artists can't seem to make an album, couple of good hits, then the rest is shit.

What? That's exactly what I'm saying. You see it as "following" whenever someone likes a band which a lot of other people like. Ever thought that maybe they just happen to like it anyway, and don't feel like they have to assume everything's bad just because it's popular, like you do?

1. An opinion is neither right or wrong. There's no such thing as an "invalid" opinion.
2. There's a thing called personal preference and subjectiveness. Someone might think Band A is god but band B is shit, but the other could think otherwise. Neither are right or wrong because they're only opinions.
3. I can say they're shit because I have listened to them and frankly did not like it. You can think otherwise. I'm not forcing you to believing they're shit even though I think they are.

Again, i'll say, the reason I have them, is cause I like them, or were interested in them.  Not cause its a fashion to listen to them.  If someone asked me what I like, they'd get a wide variety, if someone asked some of my friends, they'd probably think they were talking to clones.

Video game music.

Ambient music.

Cheesy electronic music/certain J-pop/video game remixes.

However I can also listen to opera, pop (Madonna, Michael Jackson etc), classical, older metal and some other things.

Music I truly hate and despise is typical brit pop, Oasis, Queen, Beatles, David Bowie and everything else in that genre.

I also hate american "Kelly Clarkson" rock/pop and most average american guitar based music.

I hate and despise latino pop/reaggeton etc, It's really a musical abomination.

When it comes to folk, jazz, blues etc I'm just neutral. I don't hate it and I don't love it.

Fuck sake, my girlfriend's obsessed with Touhou.

That's really nice, especially if you even wrote it yourself.

I wish I knew how to do stuff like that, I have musical talent but I don't know anything about computers.

It's not too hard, just download a program like FL Studio and muck about until you get the hang of it. I'm mostly self-taught but I had some piano training.

Btw, this, and not that Vapors crap, is my official weaboo theme song. The singer is a vocaloid, but the original voice used to create that vocaloid was the voice of Gackt, who has a slightly lower register/more baritone range than most pop singers.

I know how to play piano and accordeon, but advanced computer programs is really tough imo. Do I need a keyboard to make music or is it fine without one?

Either way is good. I use a small keyboard for melodies at the moment, have hardware synths that I use aswell but I've to get them from my dad's shed. You're more likely to get confused on the theory of sound/mastering rather than the program, that in itself is an artform.

I'm not following a trend either. I heard some of their songs and liked them, so I listen to them. I don't listen to them just because other people do. Disliking something just because it's popular is lame. I listen to whatever I like, whether it's popular or unpopular

Benji: But babe, I'm the best there is. You're wet in my presence, I know it!
Some bint: That's because you fucking spilt my drink. It's all over me.
Benji: Nah, you cannot resist me babe. Only fat and ugly women do. So, nearest hotel for a quickie? Cock's largin' 'n chargin, you can't say no!
Some bint: No. Leave me alone.
Benji: You fuck ugly bitch, I know deep down you want me. You can't because you're too fucking ugly. You can't have this shit, it's smokin' hot!
Some bint: Piss off or i'll get the bouncers to kick you out.
Benji: I can take 'em on babe, nothing can stop me.

To clear up some confusion (and correct me if I'm wrong Shleed), the term 'bint' is slang for  just any type of female. It's more commonly used in Ireland and the UK. Can be taken as a term of endearment, I guess.

I think gus adopted the term because Shleed referred to her as one, and she decided to play down it's effectiveness.

As I said, correct me if I'm wrong.

It's not actually an Irish term at all, I use it a lot here and people look at me odd. Usually heard in the midlands/north in the UK.

Oddly enough though, I picked it up from Ginny, who is Dutch. A shame the silly bint decided to dissaspear, haven't seen her since January. Probably dead, who knows.

Dutch people are american wannabes or brit wannabes. They have really poor identity themselves, actually weaker than swedes. That's why they use so many local expressions they picked up from their WoW friends or similar and also why they speak in fake english accents.

The Beatles have always been a favorite since I was 14 but now i'm growing into liking other bands I don't really fixate on one band anymore. I'm into a lot of Punk music right now. Like The Dead kennedys, The Ramones, The Germs, The Sex Pistols, Velvet Underground, The Misfits many would consider them metal but their sound is similar to The Ramones. Yeah. I like the energy. Ramones and a bottle of NOS will get me up in the morning very well.

I like a range of music. Some of the artists/albums I have on my HD:

Aerosmith
Alanis Morissette
Alice Cooper
Alice in Chains
Bach
Bangles
Barbra Steisand
Barry Manilow
Beatles
Bee Gees
Billie Holiday
Billy Joel
Bing Crosby
Black Sabbath
Blue October
Bobby Darin
Carpenters
Celine Dion
Cher
Chopin
Counting Crows
Cranberries
Cyndi Lauper
Daniele Silvestri (Italian)
Daughtry
Dave Matthews Band
David Bowie
Dixie Chicks
Dolly Parton
Doors
Duran Duran
Ella Fitzgerald
Elton John
Elvis Costello
Flaming Lips
Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons
Frank Sinatra
Helen Reddy
Janis Joplin
Jeff Buckley
Jethro Tull
Johnny Cash
KC and the Sunshine Band
Kiss
Macy Gray
Mamas & the Papas
Marilyn Manson
Matchbox 20
Meatloaf
Metallic
Michael Jackson
Mozart
Nirvana
No Doubt
Ozzy Ozbourne
Peter, Paul, & Mary
Petula Clark
Pink Floyd
Police
Pretenders
Queen
Ramones
Red Hot Chili Peppers
REM
Rod Stewart
Rolling Stones
Simon & Garfunkel
Solaris
Stevie Wonder
Supremes
Tantric
U2
Vivaldi
Who
Willie Nelson

I also love musicals/Broadway, opera and classical (although my favorites, Bach, Chopin, Vivaldi, and Mozart, are listed above), and other types of older music from the 30s-50s. Not to mention Golden Oldies rock, which I have mostly as compilations and not albums. I also really like international music compiled on the Putumayo albums, especially Celtic, various Hispanic, Italian, French, and Turkish.

I don't like rap, I prefer classic country if at all, and can enjoy metal but really have to be in the mood. E.g., right now am listening to Metallica's Load, but most days I prefer something lighter.

More than anything, I tend to listen to Bowie's music over and over. In the last year, he's my ultimate music obsession.

I could never narrow it down to just one favourite genre. It varies depending on my mood. I listening to just about everything except death metal. I like a mix of mainstream and indie.

Right now I've been on a folk kick. Colbie Caillat, Anna Nalick, Po'Girl, The Murmurs, Tristan Prettyman, Carly Rae Jepson, A Fine Frenzy.

All of my playlists are organized around either a mood. My lost thoughts mix I play when I've got too much on my brain and it's about the lyrics than anything else.

I've got some awesome classic rock playlists for roadtripping. That's one of my favourites. I drove to New Brunswick over the summer and it was Led Zeppelin, Doors, Steppenwolf, AC/DC, April Wine, Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, Stone Temple Pilots, BTO, Black Sabbath, Cheap Trick, Eagles, ELO, The Guess Who, Rush, Steve Miller Band, White Lion, ZZ Top. That kind of stuff.
