The most awesome thing I can remember doing while shitfaced...

1994, I was a 20 year old U.S. Marine stationed in Okinawa, Japan. One night walking home from the bars by myself (I tend to wander off from the group), I was crossing a bridge over one of the outlets that emptied out into the China Sea. There were several small boats moored along the side, so I thought it would be a good idea to take a boat ride. Hey, I grew up in the land of 10,000 lakes, I know how to operate a boat, right? I pick one that looks good. It was a wood boat, probably about 14' (4.2672 meters), had a pile of fishing nets in it, and a small outboard (maybe 50-80 hp).
The first thing I did was untie the boat. Good idea, right? So now I'm floating with the current, headed toward the ocean. Shit, I should get the engine started. I go to lower the engine to put the prop in the water - *sploosh* - the whole fucking engine goes into the drink. Fuck. Closer to the ocean now, current starting to pick up. Don't want to jump out, there's no way I can swim against the current. I'm passing some other boats and decide to take a running jump. Landed in a big pile of rotten smelling nets, looked up to see the boat I had jumped from capsized from me pushing off of it. Whoops. Then everything went dark.
I woke up the next morning under the nets - I must have thought they were blankets. I'm startled at first, then quickly remember the shenanigans of the previous night. So I sit up... SHIT. I must have tried to untie that boat too, because I'm about 200 feet out into the China Sea... still tethered to the dock. I pull myself and the boat back in, and see that the rope had miraculously managed to tangle itself on the moor at the last five feet of length.
Saved by pure dumb luck.

About myself: that I was capable of a lot more that I had ever realized.

About other people: Without getting into a lot of detail, I was privvy to a lot of information that explains why we (the U.S.) get involved with things that people feel is none of our business. If you could see the horrible things people do to each other in the name of religion, tradition, culture, profit... you would understand why the U.S. has a military presence where it does.

I would love to go to the U.K. and tour all the great racetracks there. I would rent or buy a car, something cool that I wouldn't have the chance to drive in the U.S., like a Renault Clio V6 Sport.

I would pretend to be Canadian so the Limeys wouldn't throw rocks at me.   :P

We rented a car when we were in the UK.

It took a while to get used to driving on the other side of the road, but we had a good GPS which could find anywhere if we could get the postal code for it, even Stonehenge or Rosslyn Chapel.

Do you have a GPS?

When I lived in Okinawa, I didn't have any problems getting used to it, because the wheel was on the other side of the car as well. The only time I got confused was when I drove a Hummer off base.

I don't have a GPS. I have navigation on my phone, that seems to work pretty well.

Mine is similar to that, although it is has to be like 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024 etc. When faced with having to do something with an odd number, I imagine the closest even number and round it down (for example, if faced with something like 8000, I imagine 8192 and round it down to 8000).

I got a call last Thursday from the company I worked with back in the spring. They had some shithead they had just fired, so they needed some help asap. I was on the road for three days last week out in the Dakotas, and will be on the road for most of this week. I actually kind of like being on the road. Lots of hours too.

Heya EBM.

You had your former avatar, to match the shoes you had bought IIRC. Shoes with weird soles that would shape up your buttocks when running.

Did they do miracles for your ass indeed, and shape it into a cute firm butt?

Haha, I had forgotten about that.

I really haven't had any time at all over the past five months to get into a fitness regimen. I've just started running again over the last two weeks, and I can tell the difference with these shoes. I can feel the soreness more in my upper legs and lower back.

A good soreness, like you get after a really good workout. I suppose it could turn into a bad soreness if I pushed it, but I've been easing back into it.

Hate pain because of wearing out sinews and ligaments and such. Very different type of pain to feel.

Yeah, I buy new running shoes often. If the joins start to hurt after a run, I figure they are about worn out.

It's the kind of hurt that feels like something is damaged. Not good.

What type of paint or liner is used in gas metal cans?  I ask as your a mechanic and have been in the military, I have an old jerry can and would like to restore it to the point of usefulness and not just for show.  It is from 1980 and I could see some sort of paint on the inside but it mostly peeled.

They make a product specifically for those cans. I don't know what the stuff the military uses is called, it came in a green can and just had a number on it. I know the motorcycle and hot rod guys use something called "Kreem", a lot of those guys swear by that stuff. I've never used it myself.

So today I was working on my son's car, he had driven through a very deep puddle.  I cleared the water out of the engine with much difficulty but was successful and got it running again :hyke:  So then I went to change the oil which had also been contaminated the drain plug was on so tight I thought I was going to strip it but it finally came off, the oil filter which is internal and covered by a plastic cover with a spot to put a socket was on just as tight.  This time I put a torque wrench on it and it took just over 70ft/lbs  WTF.  I looked up what they are supposed to be just 15 each, until know they are only been changed at the dealer because it was included when he bought the car.  My question is how tight do you think they put them on?  Four times over spec to get them off seems a bit excessive and has me worried about what else they tightened the shit out of.  BTW they crushed the oil filter inside it's housing>

Some idiots in my union do that shit with conduit and fittings. I broke a tee back in 2008 because my 27 year* journeyman tool partner torqued the fuck out of it and there was no adjustment left in it.  >:( When I train apprentices I tell them to get it snug and allow for maybe a few degrees to plumb.
