The Scutzstaffel took out the SA. Papa Eicke personally took out Gregor Strasser and later did a bang up job running Das Reich Division. In Hitlers place I would have taken out Rohm and the Beefsteak Nazis sooner.

Sure, but I felt it appropriate to mention Papa Eicke since he was a very kickass General.

I remember when that happened.  We all thought it was a joke at first that some girls started.  Our parents had to come pick us up from school because they were too scared to let us go home on public transport.

My grandfather told me this little rhyme when I was a child:

I Kina går kineserna med långa bamburör
och sticker japaneserna i röva så de blör.

Or in English:

In China the Chinese walk with long bamboo sticks
and cut the Japanese in their asses 'til they bleed.

Here we had one about the French when I was in grade school,

There's a place in France
where the women wear no pants
but the men don't care
cause they eat their underwear

95 years ago, on the 17th of August 1914, the Russians, under command of General Paul Rennenkampf, invaded East Prussia. The Russians had gathered around Kaunas in Lithuania and made a drive over the border at the old customs at Eydtkuhnen. After two battles at Stallupönen and Gumbinnen, which the Germans lost, the German troops retreated in a half circle towards southern East Prussia to attack the Russian army under general Alexander Samsonov, attacking from Warsaw. This is called the second battle at Tannenberg, although the actual battle took place about 40 kilometres from the actual village. Reinforced, the German army then returned to the battlefield in central East Prussia and defeated Rennenkamp's army as well. Samsonov shot himself two days after the battle. Rennenkampf was murdered by the bolshevists in 1918, when refusing to become an officer in the Red Army.

Wed 17 August 1977 was the date we in Australia found out about Elvis Presley's death. He died at Graceland on the 16th (their time) from a heart attack while trying to take a shit.

Drugged out and fucking huge at 42, he wasted what he had of his life. Afterall, he made heaps out of his singing, only to kill himself with food.

The "Star of Bethlehem," thought by many actually to be the planets Venus and Jupiter in conjunction in the constellation Leo, appears in the eastern skies over Judea. Some websites assert that this occurred on the 20th August, 2 AD. Other, more reliable sources have the event taking place in the dawn skies of the Middle East on the 12th August, 3 BC, and again (and even more spectacularly) on the 17th June, 2 BC.

Title: Peace Treaty of Fredrikshamn
Post by: TheoK on September 16, 2009, 10:38:35 PM
On the 17th of September 1809, Sweden had to sign the most devastating peace treaty ever with Russia, almost parallell to that Mexico had to sign with the US in Guadalope Hidalgo in 1848. More than 1/3 of the country, the Grand Duchy of Finland, the Åland islands in the Baltic and a part of Sweden Proper was lost. Treaty of Fredrikshamn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Fredrikshamn)

The treaty was preceded by the 1808-09 war:

"AT THE END OF 1807 and the beginning of 1808, the Swedish government ignored all reports of the massive maneuvres at the Russian border. The Swedish ambassador in St. Petersburg sent reports home to Stockholm and expressed his concern as the Russian armies were marching up. Nothing was done on the Swedish side. Without declaring war on Sweden, Russian troops crossed the border to Finland on February 21, 1808. This sunday, the Swedish major Gustav Arnkihl, of the Nyland dragoons - who was posted at the border - signed a report to the brigade command. '...That the Russians have crossed the border at 5 o'clock today, with a considerable force... it is also reported that they have crossed at Abborfors and also that they have gone over at Korois with Cossacks and pointed their march in our direction.' The future of the 700-years old union between Sweden and Finland hung in balance as the Final War had begun."

On the 21 of September 1860 the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer died from a lung bleeding shortly after drinking his morning coffee.
