Are they as much of a problem over there as they are in the US.

Not so much. Most glassy eyed doorsteppers are Jehovah's Witnesses, with the occasional friendly Mormon salesmen from the temple up the road for variety. Evangelical rightwing nutjobs aren't a big part of the religious map here - its said our national religion is agnosticism. followed by Islam (mostly NOT of the infidel-burning, jihadi-training variety), Catholicism (since around 20% of the English population is of Irish origin), C of E (Catholic light, with no pope and rituals in English) and Methodism, Hiduism, Sikhism and Buddhists, with a bevy of dying Protestant denominations thrown in who tend to share chapels and the like these days. There's some exceptions though, like this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abundant_Life_Church) one - quite a 'gospelly' church, but throws itself into social projects, so they cant be that bad.

Your lucky the US is full of nutjobs

considering just how religious the US is, its amazing how quiet the voices of non-fundies are, particularly when it comes to refuting the hateful, intolerant bullshit their reilgious leaders spout. Maybe it doesn't make for such good copy.  ::)

The problem isnt as big over here. Though it still exists, we have an issue with it in Durham: http://www.knowtruth.co.uk/

sure, its proselytising, but at first glance it doesn't strike me as lunatic fringe bible-thumping. certainly not a problem. depends what the emphasis is I guess: hate and fear, as in the link I posted, or a mainstream explanation of what Christianity is.

Lets just say there are some people in my college who are scarily sucked into it. One of them even organised a table tennis tournament in college, with a "small talk and some reflections". I am so thankful that Know Truth week is now over.

Here it also depends where you are.  The fundies are everywhere but not as bad were I am in New England as they are in the Midwest and South.  I am vocal about my opinions on the subject and am a member of People For the American Way and the ACLU both of which are active in countering their crap

I can't believe people would be sucked into ping pong,
by religion.

I mean if churches had Donkey Kong and Pac Man, that might be a different story.

The other way around silly. :P

Its the way they showed up at nearly everything for over a week to give talks, so we could all know truth and atone for our sins, or so they say. I reckon they were looking for heretics to burn.

Lots of the internationals here hide in the attic, so to speak. The chinese here are notorious for it.

Can't blame them. If they're going to
be proselytized.

They were not the target, it was my demographic they were aiming at.

Which then returns to the original question.
WHY would they use ping-pong?

Because people were there. They were everywhere, that was my point.

But only for the week thankfully. Otherwise it would have turned nasty, I would have been forced to do a few conversions here and there.

Atheism, or at least get them to become agnostic.

Why would you feel the need to convert anyone?  Wouldn't that make you just as bad as the people you have a problem with??

The thing that annoys me about fundies is the unswerving belief that their particular brand of truth is the absolute, the only correct truth.   The thing that people forget is that you don't have to believe in anything to be a fundie.

I suppose you have to hand it to them for believing in something, at least they are nice and happy in their bubble they create.

But you cannot really be a fundie and an agnostic. I suspect you are refering to atheism here.

Hmm...can one not be rabid about pushing the
'good' of skepticism?

Though, you're no longer ACTUALLY skeptical,
if you do.

Not really, as you said you are not a skeptic if you do.

Exactly; a hardcore Atheist can be every bit as smug, self righteous and narrow minded as any other Theist fundie.

I was referring to Hadron's comment that he would have been forced to covert them to Atheism.  I've seen people who are atheist who are just as arrogant that they hold the only truth and must make all the misguided people who have some religious beliefs see the light, as any religious fundie out there.

Ah. But an atheist believes in something (sorta).

Lets not get nit-picking- you know I was talking about what would traditionally be called religious beliefs/faith- there just isn't another succinct way of putting it imo.

I guess. Though, as I pointed out,
one COULD be sort of a fundie skeptic,
even if doing so made them no longer
a skeptic at all.

I used to get really stoned with some mates and we usually went to KFC afterwards. (y'know, the munchies thing).

There was a stack of leaflets on the counter, something about how bad drugs are, so naturally I took one for a laugh.

The whole thing was bullshit and generally painted a bad picture for ANY substance that can be taken as a stimulant (including coffee!) or depressant.

Had funny (i.e. shitty) cartoons too.

After further investigation of the fine print on the back, it was based on the teachings of L.Ron Hubbard.
