Spokane, if it's a girl. I feel it wouldn't fit on my boy so I'd have to name him Benjamin or Sam. I think I'll go by Sam.
and if I have another girl, I want to name her London. After the city I liked when I was 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15.
-
How about naming them Shitty, Poopy and Diaperheid?
-
i named my sone after a city.

I hope you rethink the latter. It's not that it's that bad a name but I can picture people singing that stupid Fergie song at her all through her childhood. (OK, so McJ's son has a song too, but it's not an inarguably shit song.) The former is unusual but might actually kind of work.

or this one:
i see London i see France, i see someones underpants.

Is naming kids after locations an American thing?

McJ's son shares a name with city, a song and a band as well, although it is arguably a shit band.
I honestly think Spokane would be a better boy's name than a girl's name.

is naming people after penises a scottish thing?

i hate that band.

I was named after a woman.

bitch?

I was named after a woman.
Me too. The woman my mother pretended to be.

That must be kind of a headfuck.
-
I was named after a couple of characters in a couple of books my mom read (though the name I'd have had as a boy apparent came out of nowhere and just "sounded good.")
-
Madonna named her daughter after a town in France.
If I have tripletts, I think i will name them Shame, About, and Raisins. :) After my favorite Johnny Depp quote in B&J.
Maybe I can name other other girl June instead or Joon. How about Ruthie.

Well, aptly enough, the triplets would pften be "humiliated."

I was kidding. That's why I had a smiley. But some people use it when they are serious too so I can see why it be hard to know when I am joking. I'd have the same problem too.
-
The smiley you want is ;) - it did seem pretty far fetched that someone would call their kids shame, about and raisins... having said which my mate's neighbours named their kids after cars.

He'd be scarred for life if you gave him a name like that.

When I was 8 I wanted my name my boy Kevin after Home Alone, then I wanted to name my girl Ellie after the lady in Jurassic Park when I was 9, 10 and 11 and then I wanted to name her Anita and my son Roger after 101 Dalmatians when I was 11, and 12. Then I wanted to name my daughters Dottie and Kit when I was 14 after A League of Their Own. Then I wanted to name my kid Natalia after the girl in GoldenEye and then James after James Bond. Then I thought Benjamin and Juniper after Benny & Joon and give them Benny and Joon as their nicknames. Now I want Spokane. Names for my future kids come from my obsessions. Oh I have wanted to name my kids Zelda and Link after the videogames when I was 16 but was against it because I don't like those names on humans nor other names that were used in Nintendo games and Sega. I had a crush on Link when I was 16 and talked about the game a lot.

I was pretty sure you had to be joking but still couldn't resist the wordplay.
Not that I'll ever get the oppotunity to inflict this on a child, but what do you guys think of Holden as a girl's name? For some reason it sounds cool in my head but then again, these people probably thought they were being cool, too. (http://www.infoplease.com/spot/celebrity-baby-names.html)
"Tu morrow."

I remember being obsessed with the name Vanessa because it tasted of a chocolate milkshake to me and Rachel because it tasted like green grapes to me.
Some words have a taste to me.

My mum had my twin sister's names picked but not mine so I got named after a nurse.

Ward Sister Jones? is that hyphenated?
-
I remember I wanted to name my child Chloe when I was 15 after 102 Dalmatians but I didn't like the character. I thought she was a bitch from the way she treated Ella. I bet she was happy when Cruella came back.

I wanted to name my brother Constantino.
My folks let me add it (and a couple of others)
as middle names.

We're Catholic. As many as we can bear.
Yeah, but he signs (as I do) with a couple of middle
initials. Funny, he took the inverse of mine. I found it
flattering.

1. Yes it is. You just can't bear as many. I think it's
more the Southern European backgrounds which
do such. But, we all wanted to give him names.
2. You misspelled it. But yes. Planning on tracking me down?
I think that I've pretty much revealed where I am here anyway.

1. True, we cant take the names.

I was with the woman I married for 11 years.
Two other 2 year LTRs. I'm not really comfortable
with short term things. Had some, and even treasure
the memories of a couple of them, but I crave permanence.

You never mentioned that you were married etc. I dont think you are as bad as you like to project yourself. As for things, i like the short term. It helps me deal with my indecisive nature.

1. [whine]people started claiming that I was
not getting over my wife. True. But it was
clear that I was annoying them
2. Oh, I never really considered myself a whiner.
But, I have that reputation here. [/whine]
3. what is the longest relationship that you've
tried? Did you live together?

3. Calandale, I am 18. Number 3 is as simple as non-existant. I was extending the short term/ long term thing to other areas.
2. I dont really consider you much one either.
1. I am just as bad at not getting over things it seems. Like Oxford for instance, which still plays on my mind.
-
3. Calandale, I am 18. Number 3 is as simple as non-existant. I was extending the short term/ long term thing to other areas.
Ah, you might find love to be different. I basically moved
in with my first gf. I had assumed you were a bit older,
as you implied that A levels were the equivalent of an
undergraduate education.
1. I am just as bad at not getting over things it seems. Like Oxford for instance, which still plays on my mind.
Yeah, but that's recent. I still hold a fondness for all of my
loves, and wondering what might have been. With my wife,
'tis simple - they were the only years which I was fully content,
and I never expect to see anything like them. Indeed, I was
miraculously lucky to end up in such a situation, with such a
beautiful woman, in the first place.

1. A levels are equalent more or less to the US Undergraduate system, at least in terms of academic knowledge that students learn. Its the differing aims of the US and Uk systems, the US is about integration into society, rather than so much learning. As for love, with time I will hopefully find out.
3. 8-9 Months really isnt recent. Most people got over it in a few days, i reckon it will be a long time before I do so. I am sure you will end up being content again, but being content isnt my thing.
-

Hmm...so I presume that you've had things like linear algebra, ect,
since you're interested in Math(s). Outstanding students, in good
districts in the US manage that level. It kind of makes me wonder
what you do at the undergrad level though. I mean, foreign grad
students seem about at the same level of knowledge as those from
the US. Indeed, we had a couple of students from France recently,
who were pretty damned unimpressive, in terms of what they seemed
to know.
I am sure you will end up being content again, but being content isnt my thing.
I have mixed feelings on it. The exhilaration comes from NOT being content.
The strong raw emotions - even intellectual ones. On the other hand, there's
something nice about all the big problems in life being settled - and just enjoying.
Ah, I didn't feel any of that, at your age though. You might find that you feel
more of a pull towards contentment, as you age.

1. As for what we do at the undergrad level, i cant wait to find out. I assume the first term will be little new though, while the single maths students catch up with the double. Most foriegn grad students probably struggle to communcate whatever depth of knowledge they have, due to the language barrier. As for the outstanding students, they may reach that level, but its not recognised on there high school leaving qualificions is it?
2. Maybe I will change as I age, but then again i have never been one who changes massively with time. The dilemma is that you want two almost mutaully exclusive things, i assume.
-

I don't think we have something akin to leaving qualifications.
Hard to tell - as I know schools here changed a lot recently.
But, it's certainly noticed wherever it's important - say admissions.
The dilemma is that you want two almost mutaully exclusive things, i assume.
Interesting way to put it. Yes, it's yet another paradox that I have to resolve, before
I'm done.

1. I wish the british system recognised what people do above A-level. But it doesnt in terms of admissions, its a very corrupt process as far as I am concerned.
2. You like your paradoxes, dont you? :P

1. That's just not reasonable. But, is the system automated?
Surely, you have minimal requirements, and then have a chance
to increase your chance, IF you meet them?
2. Like isn't really the word. I feel that some have interesting secrets
hiding behind them. Things which I NEED to understand.

2. Ok, you get a small buzz from having them then...

New perspectives. Have you tried hypnosis, that can provide you with a few more i believe.

I should rephrase that. sometimes I have to beat my face into my keyboard to keep myself from saying something
terribly MEAN, just for the sake of being mean.

I'm well aware of that, and well practiced in it. there needs to be a balance, though..and since I
like 93% of the people here, I try to not be TOO mean...especially to the silly little gits who would CRY about it.

Danger is often stealthy and you can not always recognize how close you are. Once a danger is identified, it loses its power, anyway.

I doubt that concerns for luck are factors ... more like a bunch of whining, justifying and excuse making, of which she would prefer to be spared, if I'm getting her drift at all.

Not at all. Woke up not long ago (ungodly hour)
very cheerful and happy. Figured out what my
plans are. Now I just have to enact them. But,
I'm on the only course which makes sense for me.

Eh, I've been stressing about what I was going
to do once my lease runs out. Stressing for months,
and now I NEED to act. Came to the conclusion that
finding love is more important to me than anything
else. So, I'll stay here, and search for work from here.
Probably the easier answer too. But, the important thing is
to follow my primary need, rather than only hold it as a sorta
goal. I ended up fucking up everything recently, because I've
been trying for what I never wanted. Heh, got further along
an undesirable path than I thought I would though. And with
little effort. I suppose that there's something to be said about
that.

Madonna named her daughter after a town in France.
If I have tripletts, I think i will name them Shame, About, and Raisins. :) After my favorite Johnny Depp quote in B&J.
Maybe I can name other other girl June instead or Joon. How about Ruthie.
Am I reading your posts right?? you're pregnant??

Yeah I am. I did something stupid and now here I am with a consequence. I'm deciding on Spokane so far. I just hope the guy won't walk away from our baby and I am stuck with it alone and am forced to put it up for an adoption.

:jawdrop:
-
I was named after a woman.
Me too. The woman my mother pretended to be.
That must be kind of a headfuck.
Oh no, it's a cute story. When she was a teenager, all the boys down in the local town her family moved to thought she was Italian, so she didn't tell them her real name, she told them another one, an Italian one because she loved being mistaken for being Italian. She was young, so it's ok.

i named my sone after a city.
My current last name is a city. I dont really like it.
Im not ever having kids, but if i did, I like the names Max and Tallulah
-
For years I've been fascinated by names and have put unusual names together in my head,
but I've just never had the occasion to have children. Just as well. 8)
-
I kind of prefer old fashioned names. Odder ones, though, like Ursula and Julian.
I dont like just putting weird sounds together. It seems like everyone is making up their kids names from scratch these days. I guess it is because I always had trouble with people spelling my name wrong.

Me, oh, me, that's MY name, I want that one! *barges forward and grabs it* :GA:
-
If I ever have kids, which is highly unlikely, I'd name the girl Jean. I haven't really thought about boys' names.
-
Prince Albert and I agreed on Kenneth Charles for a boy, even before we thought of marriage. Six years later we still didn't have a name for a girl. I liked Victory Rose or Emily Louise. Can't remember what names he liked. BTW, the PR has none of these names.
-
Sadly I didn't get to name my boy any of the names I mentioned in this thread. No way was I going to name my kid Jimmy after an alcoholic in A league of Their Own or Stillwell after the bratty kid and I hate the name anyway. I didn't want to name my Kid Mike after that mean character in Benny & Joon and plus we have enough Mike's in our family and I don't need a third.
-
If I had a boy, I would LIKE to name him Lord Xanadir, but if I did that, everytime he got asked his name, people would punch him because they'd think he was being a smartass. :dunno:

I was almost named after my maternal grandmother. I am glad I was not.
-
I was named Lisa because my mother liked that name long before she ever met my dad. I like old-fashioned names, too.
If I ever have kids, which is highly unlikely, I'd name the girl Jean. I haven't really thought about boys' names.
Jean could be a boy's name too, though.
I knew a woman named Jean and she was a wonderful person whom everyone loved, but in her case Jean was short for Virginia.

Jean Evelyn would be nice 8) I don't like the boy Jean though, sounds a bit too poncy for my liking.
I quite like Julian for a boy or Tobias; he could shorten it to Toby.

Still curious as to what you named your son. I thought you were going to tell us after he was born.

I really like the name Lisa. It is not common and it is not weird. It is just right. I have only ever known one Lisa in rl and that was in high school.
I was named after a nurse at the hospital where I was born.
-
Oh I don't remember wanting to tell everyone. It's David Michael. Michael is his middle name.
-
I do like the name David. :)
-
David Michael is a good, honest sounding name.
-
I like the name Garrett for a boy and Allison for a girl. Or a boy and a girl named Pratt and Whitney. Because they are the names of aircraft engines.
-
I like the name Titanica but I doubt my husband let us name our next baby that if it's a girl. But there are lot of others names associated with the Titanic because there were 705 survivors and 2,220 passengers. No one knows the exact because there is contradicting information on how many survivors there were and how many passengers. I can always choose a name a passenger had on the ship. Or name our kid Jack or Rose or Cora or Tommy or Helga (the woman Fabrizo liked, you see more of her in the deleted scenes) after the famous James Cameron movie.

I might name our next kid Shut Up after one of my favorite scenes in the Titanic but then people would think he was being rude to them if they ask for his name.
Maybe I will name our next kid "To the Stars."

The Latin for "To the Stars" is "Ad Astra" so you could use Astra if it's a girl.
Estelle and Esther mean star and so does Tara.

I wouldn't name a girl Astra here, the Holden car company has a model of car called Astra. I used to own a Holden Astra. :D
And Pratt, you wouldn't get away with that here either. To call someone a prat is an insult.

This is sort of how I get images for avatars; I do an image search and copy them straight from the Google page as they are the right size already.

Kayleigh named her rats Olive, Jadzia and Ezri. Two DS9 names. Since watching that I have always liked Nerys.
-
I gave The PR a beautiful first name. I hate the nickname she came up with.
Eleanor to Nellie.
She's named after Eleanor of Aquitaine. I used to affectionately call her CinderEleanor.
-
I shortened my name to Zanne. I am pretty sure my mum is not in full favour of it.
I like Eleanor. It's pretty.

thank you. Eleanor of Aquitaine is my favorite historical figure. That woman was BADASS.

Never cared for shortened name nicknames, especially cutesy immature sounding ones with a y sound on the end. It's okay if people choose it themselves, but some people just get stuck with them. Can remember in highschool a friend's brother wanted people to start calling him Tim, but he was stuck with Timmy because that's how he was always known. Both kids have names with the potential of cutesy sounding nicknames, but was firmly against it when they were growing up. The oldest decided to take a cutesy nickname in middle school, and then grew sick of it after a year, but by then it was too late. Fortunately we moved soon after and she got to start over, lesson learned. The move also prompted the youngest to start over too and change to a shorter version of his name, but not a cutesy sounding name.

The exception to that, would be a couple I knew when younger. They named their girl Francis after a grandmother, and decided to call her Fancy. That seemed acceptable because Francis is a horrible name.
-
My first step dad's surname was Francis. I've seen the name spelt as Frances as well.

Ah, you're right, Frances is the female version. Fanny is one of the female nicknames, which is also horrible, so Fancy seemed a creative choice.
-
Ugh, Fanny is horrible. Used to read about a character called that in Enid Blyton books.
-
Nellie chose this name when she started at a new school in 2005. Before that her nickname was Ella.
I respect her choice of Nellie, but call her Nell most of the time.
-
Still call the youngest by his full name, but think it's sort of cool other people don't. He doesn't seem to mind.

Borty McBortface

A guy in my college class is named Lachlan and before he came to college, he had always been called Lachie by everyone. He said it was really strange to be called Lachlan.
-
Noted Precious Huddleston while doing some work. Had to see what he looked like. A black mountain of a teenager.
-
Borty McBortface
My second choice would be Coathangery McCoathangerface.

The way to tell that she will not have kids.

Spokane, if it's a girl. I feel it wouldn't fit on my boy so I'd have to name him Benjamin or Sam. I think I'll go by Sam.
and if I have another girl, I want to name her London. After the city I liked when I was 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15.
And I failed with these names because none of my kids are named these. But I wanted the name Anita but because of our last name, it would sound too funny and that would get our kid teased for her name because she would be hearing Anita this and Anita that instead of I need this and I need that all because of her last name. Plus I wanted to name her Natalie but my husband didn't like that name and I don't think it's a good idea to name your kids after your special interests because mine change.

In a way that's totally not clever.

The Borty McBortface one was a little clever.

I'll use a trigger warning next time.

It wasn't offensive, just a joke that fell flat.

I get that a lot. In what way did that particular joke fall flat?

It bled to death. :zoinks:

It must have made a hell of a mess if the volume of blood was the only thing keeping it rigid. I consider that to be an acceptable result.

I was joking and being hilarious. :zoinks: It might just be because coathangers are a dangerous barbaric idea that predates women's rights to safe legal abortions. Or maybe because Borty McBortface was funny and you ruined it by making a lesser quality joke. :hahaha:

In real life a social faux-pas like that would cause long term problems for me (or at least earn me a lot of glares and angry muttering), but here I get helpful advice from a passing rodent. That's nice.

I know, right. I'm awesome like that. :zoinks:

If I had a boy I'd name him Niggar just to make him tough.

For the good of the gene pool, please don't have kids.
-
Okay, breaking confidentiality here. We named The PR Eleanor. After Eleanor of Aquitaine.
Her nicknames as a wee one included:
Ellie strawbelly
Ellie kadelly
CinderEleanor
She decided on Nellie as a nickname as a teen and it's been that ever since.
-

You already ruined it.
-
My gene pool has adjustable Jacuzzi jets. :zoinks:

Eleanor? thats classy. I really like it. Pretty, and elegant. A good reflection of the lady herself:)
Me, if I had kids. First choices would be kassiane, typhanee, cazzie, laura, (all after some of my favourite people in the world I've ever known) or persephone for a girl, got less good ideas for a boy. Loki would be my first choice. Second line, Uriel, kane/kain.
