I felt a small earthquake about 10:30 this morning. Since big quakes are usually preceded by a few smaller ones, it got me wondering.... the last big quake L.A. had was the northridge quake of '94.... are we overdue?? How should I prepare for the end of the world??
P.S. for those of you who thought I was going to post a pic of my sausage..... maybe next time..... 8)

Are the big earthquakes in LA predicted to be usually less than 13 years apart? I remember a bit about that one in '94.
I have only felt an earthquake once, it was tiny. I asked other people about it but no one knew about it or felt it. Then I saw on the news that night that there had been one.

i felt it also.
i think we are overdue.
i grew up here and i remeber as a kid we used to havew at least a noticable one every few years.
northridge was in 1987 but bigbear was in 1994, i believe.

No, the Northridge Earthquake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northridge_earthquake) was in 1994. That's how my sister and her husband met. They both lived in Burbank at the time and he helped her move some stuff out of her apartment, that had been damaged in the quake.
NOTE: As I typed this, I felt ANOTHER quake...... I think a big one is about to hit us.

we had a huge one when i was a senior in HS. might have been in january of 1988. also, the big bear earthquake happened after the northridge.
if it is every six to ten years we are due.

i love earthquakes. when i was visiting my real dad in santa rosa i felt 2 or 3 and it felt very wierd, the ground moving under your feet is a totally bizzare feeling :clap:

My favorite earthquake was the Big Bear Earthquake of '96. I was stationed in 29 Palms at the time. It was about 4 in the morning and I was fast asleep. I was having a dream about riding along on my friend's '72 Dodge Challenger when the earthquake hit. Since I was still asleep my brain incorporated the shaking into the dream. It felt as all the sudden, the front end my friend's car started to shake real hard. I said "Dude did you just break a tie rod or something?" then I woke up and realized what was going on.
After it was all over I had a good laugh about it. ;D

I think that they are named for the city or town that is close to the epicenter of the earthquake.

Only somewhat.
The Cascadia fault which is off the coast of Oregon and part of the ring of fire, produces fairly predictable earthquakes that are very powerful and destructive. The interval for these earthquakes is between 300 to 450 years. the last one happened in the year 1700. That means that there will be another big one (8.5 or bigger) in the near future, if not in our lifetimes, then the lifetimes of generation Z.
Luckily for me, since we are several hundred miles inland, the most power we will feel is a 5.5. The coast, on the other hand is totally fucked. They will not only get an 8.5 or bigger, they will also get the giant tsunami that follows it.
The entire Pacific Northwest Coast is one giant ticking time bomb. :o :o :o :GA:

That's what I thought, you're inland. Lucky. I'm also lucky where I am, despite being right on the coast. I've felt an earthquake once, it was tiny.
When I was in Japan for three weeks, I didn't feel a thing. I was traveling a lot of the time though.
