CHIRP!
Seeing if I like this better. Might be getting sick of
someplace that shall remain nameless.
-
haha, welcome dude.
-
Hi Calandale. That is an interesting introduction. Do you like birds?
I have been sick of the Place Which Must Not Be Named for a while now. I got tired of watching He Who Must Not Be Named use and abuse people, but you are still pretty new there and maybe you have not seen this side of him yet. :wallbutt:
I hope that you like this place better. Stick around and check us out. You will see more after you have ten posts.
-
Thanks. I'm not happy about everything over there, but that's to be expected. I see things that don't thrill me here too. At least it's free speech here though. And hell, I can handle myself in a flame war, if it comes to it.
I do like birds - mainly they're a way for me to remember my wife though.
BTW - what's with these rookie rules? I mean, I'm ready to get raped over the coals and all. Worse, I don't want to have to use kid gloves myself.
-
LOL, rules are meant to be disregarded, so disregard them.
-
I word-that-shall-not-be-named you to this thing-that-shall-not-be-named! Welcome! Uh, I mean "greeting-phrase-that-shall-not-be-named"! Yeah, that's it!
-
hello.
so you are married. do you have children?
-
hello.
so you are married. do you have children?
Gods, I hope not. Killed 'em whenever I found out.
My wife ditched me though. Disappeared, and given my
track record, is probably dead by now.
-
how old are you?
-
39.
-
where do you reside?
-
Welcome to Intensity, anyway. I take it you're not the sensitive type?
-
where do you reside?
Eugene OR. feels like home with all the homeless people.
Welcome to Intensity, anyway. I take it you're not the sensitive type?
Gosh...I hope not. Although I do get a tear in my eye when I force someone to
eat their own heart. Does that disqualify me?
-
Greetings - looks like you've avoided the kool-aid. welcome to the madhouse matey... :evillaugh:

Nah, just did enough shit that it didn't effect me. But thanks for the welcome.
-
are you a mod/former mod at WP?
-
Still, for now.
Random selection and all.
-
who is your friend that is afraid of this place?
have you seen her naked?
-
Wow. We know a lot here.
I don't think that I want to answer that question. I'm not even
sure whom you are talking about, actually.
-

that's fine. you just did. ;)
do you now have an agenda like so many of the other males that have seen someone's nudes?

No. I don't think that I did. I can imagine a couple of people that that question would apply to.
I'm just not sure how you would know.
do you now have an agenda like so many of the other males that have seen someone's nudes?
Uh...doesn't everyone have an agenda? I don't see anything that concerns anyone here,
unless they're g-men though. And then I'm just screwed.
-
aloof.
that keeps it interesting.
-
There are things that one has to be careful about.
-
sure.
well, you can tell graelwyn that she is welcome here.
its just that people will continue to be honest. and i still have a few tough questions for her.
-
Ah. So the answer then is no. I haven't. Though she directed me here. Said I'd like it a bit more.
And yes, she is unable to cope with abuse. Afraid of me too.
-
i equate abuse with honesty as it relates to her.
it seems to me as if she prefers people to tell her what she wants to hear rather than the truth.
-
I don't know. I think she just felt like she was being gang-raped here, or something.
As to me, I was nice enough to her (and don't really rag on people for whining anyway
which is the worst that I've seen out of her), but I think that my inherent violence
scares the shit out of her.
Hell, maybe she suggested it thinking that I'd lash out and hurt someone's feelings
or something. I don't really care. I can't see it making a bit of difference though.
Anyone here for the stay is tough enough to handle anything that could be posted,
and it's not like I'm gonna get pissed enough to leave my fat ass and do anything about
some online insult.
-
she had her own advocates.
it wasn't like it was her against the world.
she just didn't like the message, because it was honest.
-
Eh. I've found her pretty helpful over at WP (not that anything really helps); but it's definitely a different flavor.
-
I like that bird in your avatar. Is that a calandale?
-
Never heard of one. It's a stellar's jay. One of the reasons that I'm in Oregon.
Bitchy damned birds. Very pretty though.
-
Calendale?
OK. Wipe your feet.

Yep. Like the cute little robins. :)
-
Yep. Like the cute little robins. :)
Not fond of robins myself. They sing at stupid times, suck down worms, and cluck like hens.

i love the tufter TITmouse.

Heh. Answered that as the smallest rodent on a trivia game.

Oh, a robin isn't the same thing in Europe as in America. A robin here is a small bird with a red breast, while a robin in America is a thrush.

You'd better not be a spy.

??? Our robins have red breasts too. Maybe a little larger though.

Eh? I'm here openly. Nothing sneaky about it.
Not sure what kind of harm you think I could do anyway.
Report that people are a bit rude here? That they don't
like some other people? I think that this is all known.
EDIT: whoops - didn't see the pic (was writing my post at the time - and the other forum that uses this bbs that I'm on shows the pics in that mode.
-
Ask the Brits which bird they call a robin. ;)

This is what I call a robin. I don't believe it is a thrush.

Apparently this is what the Europeans call a robin:

This is a thrush:
-
It's a thrush bird. But to be very precise, a European robin is also a thrush bird, but much smaller than the usual ones. A blackbird is also a thrush bird, for example.
-
European robin=Erithacus Rubecula. American robin=Turdus migratorius. "Turdus" is Latin for "thrush". See, I'm right, as usual. 8)
-
Definitely like the European version better. Ours are common, and not at all pleasing to me (others like them). Blackbirds on the other hand, are really sweet. Sound like rusty swings.
-
You should hear their singing. It sounds like small bells of silver when they sing. :)
-
You make that sound like a good thing. I'm sure that they're pretty though, the little songbirds are. I'm just addicted to the crow family (which all jays belong to).
-
Here is one from England:

Cute little things. Still....
-
i liked the red breasted one with the green wings.
-
They look more "greenish" on their wings in Sweden and continental Europe than in Britain.

What's Latin for 'turd'?

Merda is the closest I can think of at this hour.

You know what people from Oregon are called right ?? .................... Oregonisims !!!
-
Never heard that one.
I thought that I'd share a wonderful pic that I came across. Not sure what thread to put it in. But, the fact that I find this one of the hottest things that I've seen on the net says a lot about me:

I think I'll have to take Linda back after all. She promised to show me that she could suck my cock and my balls at the same time! She actually is better on deep throating and rimming than women twice as old.

I think they tend to be better young. Might need some training, but damn, are they willing to please.

Oh, so she's fairly old already. Ah well, I guess you gotta deal with the cards you draw.
-
You could fuck an underage without problems until 2006 in Sweden. You couldn't be charged for it, if she consented to it, though the legal age of consent formally is 15 in Sweden.

I SO need to move to a civilized country.

My wife was able to do that. She had no gag reflex though. Real nice.

Sadly not. I'm not that handy with building things. I will be taking a toolbox of sex aids though, to make sure she's stimulated as much as is inhumanly possible.

Can you shop locally for these accoutrements? How do you heat it before you use it or is it powered?
It looks like the perfect interface for a warbling, rotating, fucking machine.
:evillaugh:
-
I get them online, though there's also localish shops that sell them. Despite this being quite a conservative area, there's now a lingerie shop just down the street, but I don't think it sells anything other than lingerie. I'd need to go into town, about 40 minutes away by bus, to get dildos and things. It's just a solid, rock-hard dildo made from toughened glass, with no vibrating components or anything like that. If you want to change the temperature prior to insertion, you run it under hot or cold water, or use ice if you want to make it especially invigorating.
-
I have had an icy blowjob, twice before, where she takes crushed ice into her mouth along with my cock. It is very intense, although messy. Messy is how she liked everything, though.
I wonder, if she decided not to let you have that dildo back, how hard would it be to pull it out, against her contracting-vaginal-muscle attempts to prevent you taking it. I think the design might work in her favor.
-
Sounds like you want one of your own to experiment with. ;)
I've never had a girl use her vaginal muscles. All the girls I've been with have been the 'bag of spuds' sort. :( The girl I'm going to see claims to be 'exceptionally skilled' though, so I'm expecting it to be good. :)
Here's my collection of toys, none of which I've had a chance to use on a girl (I just go 'oooo, shiny!' mostly):

Nice. Try menthol too. More intense, though sadly less messy.
Peter - Ok, I'm a little confused about some of the toys in the top picture. I think that I understand the O-rings, but what are some of the other things?
Well, I use toys too then, if you count the toothbrush. Usually the evidence gets eaten though.

The clear tube things in the background are jelly sleeves. They're very stretchy and soft, and they go around the shaft of your penis, or around a dildo, vibrator, finger, cucumber or whatever for extra stimulation to the vagina. The pink thing with the spikes on it is a clitoral-stimulating jelly cock-ring, where the ball-bearing and jelly spikes slap against the girl's clitoris and anus on each thrust, as well as providing stimulation to her vulva in general. The red and black thing is another kind of cock-ring that's supposed to make it feel better for the guy by applying pressure to the urethra.

I got it in a BDSM pack along with the sandpaper, clothes pegs and candles when I went to a dungeon with a girl last year. I saw a guy using it on a girl, and she seemed to like it, though it's not really the most stimulating of toys; just a bit of a teaser.

Wrote a big expo of my break-up on another site, so I figured I'd put it here, in case anyone is enough of a voyeur to be interested:
Calandale, you've never really explained it (you don't have to if you don't want to), but how did your split with your wife happen?
I still don't understand it myself. We started growing more distant.
We ended up moving from a really nice apartment to a smaller,
less comfortable one, and things really deteriorated.
Our lives had become something of a granfalloon, but after the
move (which was into the neighborhood she grew up in), she
began hanging out with some old friends again. On the other hand,
I, who had probably been the more social of the two of us, in terms
of having contact with friends, had mostly lost contact with everyone
I knew (various means - mainly them moving out of the area). This
reversal didn't suit us well.
Along with this, I no longer had a safe retreat - really neither of
us did; the new place was just a bit too cramped. We both needed
a lot of time to ourselves. BUT, there had been the underlying distance
between us, as well. Anyhow, things started getting pretty bad, but I
never thought that we would crack - she was spending more and more
time away, and there were obvious problems. We tried fencing (something
we hadn't really done together since we first met), and she admitted wanting
to kill me. No huge deal that, but it was a pretty clear sign.
Then one day, she and I got in an argument about what was going on, and she
just decided that she couldn't handle it anymore. She made it clear that either I
had to leave, or she would. There was nothing to keep me in Buffalo, so I finally
decided to leave. The only thing that I could really get out of her, was that she
was losing her mind, and couldn't afford to go crazy. It's funny, I tried to convince
her to go on a Bonny and Clyde type of spree. Would have been a kick, and I wouldn't
have lost her.
It was probably tougher on her, than it was on me. I was absolutely devastated,
but over the next couple of years, she made a couple of serious suicide attempts.
She pretty much went crazy anyhow.
After we were separated for a little over a year, I had to bail her out of the psych
center (she had tried ODing on sleeping pills). It looked like things were going to
be alright between us, but a number of concerns haunted me. When I expressed
them to her, that was pretty much the end of that. Some harsh words ensued, and
after a few months, she cut all contact. I have no fucking idea if she's alive or dead
(probably dead, given my past history). I still love her, and miss the hell out of her,
but, like when I expressed my concerns, I'm just not positive that we would
work out together anymore.
-
How about a twenty-words-or-less on that? :P

Nah. I gave the condensed version already.
Just didn't want to waste all that angst in

happy belated birthday, calandale.
40, huh?
is that why you were so depressed last week?
did you do anything to celebrate?
-
Nah. I get pretty depressive every spring.
Last year it ran through August.
Didn't celebrate - just work and postwhoring.
Just got a package of
toys from my mom, but I don't really have time to
open/look at them. Should be some cookies in there.
-
what is your favourite cookie?
-
Crescents. Made with butter and pecans, dipped in powdered sugar.
My wife actually learned to make them
even better than my mom's. Eh, at least
my mom's good for something now.

Dave Grohl played drums in Nirvana (a Lappish folk band) and later Queens of the Stone Age (dancing bear travelling circus)
but is most widely known as the lead singer/guitarist for the Foo Fighters (kazoo band).

I was rather guessing.
Still, I AM that clueless.
Never much liked Nirvanna.
Too much noise, with not much

loud, it just all blended into indistinguishable

I find Lederhosen humorous. For people with no humour, they seem to smile a good deal. Maybe that is because I went to lots of bars.
Wagner, Bach, Brahms and Mozart are basically creators of German music lol. Beethoven was born in Germany, but composed mostly in Austria. Tons of decent German music out there. Necrophagist is a German band. Rammstein is pretty good too.

Mozart's Austrian. :-\

Oh yeah. Too bad he wrote his operas in the German language. Hitler was Austrian too by birth lol.

ever pulled.

Bach I do enjoy, got me there.
Brahms also settled in Austria.
Rammstein? Industrial/metal counts as noise in my books. Not music :p
Not saying I don't appreciate their noise.
Never heard of Necrophagist, but going by the name... fucking pox.

Noise? There is an actual genre called Noise, and it isn't similar to Rammstein in any way. You think Fear Factory is noise too I guess. That shows your ignorance of music and music theory in general if you think Rammstein is just noise. They aren't all chromatic chaos or anything. More like really heavy dance music.
Necrophagist is a German band that specializes in multimeter riffs and classical style guitar leads. They can be considered Death Metal. You would have to be open minded to enjoy that music though. Something you apparently lack in spades. You think Tool is the end all of music though, which says a great deal. Going by that name, all of their fans should be Tools. I like Tool, but I am no blind fanboy.
Wagner is just epic and over the top. He isn't that bad, just too much for some people.
It doesn't matter where they settled. Austria is almost the same thing as Germany lol. Austrians speak German and their cultures are so intertwined with eachother's that it isn't even funny.

Dance 'music' is pretty much just noise.
-
Dance 'music' is pretty much just noise.
Because of the beats? What do you consider noise? Dance music that has riffs and chords that actually have a progression are noise? Last I remember Rammstein has chorus and verse song structure for their songs as well. You might want to hear some actual Noise music before you call something noise. You sound like a old man who tells kids to get off of his lawn.

Fuck. Ok.
1st up, up until two weeks ago I was playing bass in a metal band. I know what fucking metal is.
Next, when did I ever say I thought Tool was the best band in existence? I happened to be wearing a Tool t-shirt in my old avatar.
Big shit.
I said I liked Rammstein but I didn't really consider it music. I was taking the piss a bit because they have an undeservedly large following.
But the noise part, as with much metal, I'm referring to the amount of sound which washes out all timbre except an unmelodious distortion and the bass drum, with the odd lyric escaping here and there.
Their recordings may be ok, but metal bands sound shit live 95% of the time.
I study sound art at university so my ideas of "noise" are probably a bit too complex for you to comprehend, fuckface.
Wagner is epic, over the top; which is why I don't enjoy it. I mean I AM open minded, I'll listen to ANYTHING but I wouldn't go out of my way to buy CDs or see performances of his work. Dvorak is more my cup of tea.
Austria and Germany are very similar, does not mean they are the same thing.
Oh shit, I think Pea is rubbing off on me :(

Drama is, for me, the most important

this.

Went to the Bayreuth Oper and wandered around the grounds. But it was closed, and I heard no music. Had a great time in town drinking cappuccino with my best German pal, though.
Austrians & Germans similar? Don't let them hear you say that.
Rammstein is party music - they rock.

'party' music and rock are not compatible.

then your parties suck.

Well there are parties and there are parties
I am blinded by my intense desire, but I still care about them. :wanker:
Yeah, I will show you how much I care, I have a 3 bedroom apartment and no one to share it with. I also have dirty magazines on the side of the coach. The sex toy and lubricant are sitting there to. I have a pussy.. cat who loves me to. It licks me sometimes, trying to compete with the stray cat. Emotional strain disrubting my grammar again ::)
A sex toy....lube.......... and a cat?
Well your weekend is sorted!

The melody aspect of Rammstein is very basic, but it exists. Mostly the melody is keyboards though. It isn't atonal chromatic chaos by any means.
Go ahead and state your concept of "noise". I am sure I can comprehend it and I doubt it is as complex as you think. Noise has to be pretty damn random to me for the music itself to be actually considered noise. Just because there are noises contained in the music, it doesn't mean that the entire song itself is comprised of noise.
Rhythmic music is still music, even though there is very basic melody. I do prefer stuff like Kalmah and Children of Bodom myself, which has plenty of melody but is not German. I stated Necrophagist just due to their guitar playing being unique and skillfully played.
The amount of sound doesn't wash out melody at all for me, I can hear it easily. It is called having chord progressions and related melodic patterns. Would you call Iron Maiden noise? The concept of a great deal of melodic death metal is just greatly sped up and lower tuned Iron Maiden type guitar. Same goes for most power metal except it isn't tuned down. You use noise too broadly in my opinion. I am very aware that some metal guitarists make "noise" solos but those are more based off of sounds that are frequency based and more than often follow the overall tonality of the song. That is a big part of expression on electric guitar and what makes it unique.
There are several things on that page that deal with the concept of noise and its presence in almost every form of recorded music. Noise is in music, but the actual genre of Noise is different somewhat. Tom Morello does noise solos all the damn time for example, but Rage isn't really a metal band imo. Dragonforce has noise sections in their solos as well. That doesn't mean the entire catalogue of their songs are comprised of noise. Pick scrapes done by Tool would be considered noise. Most of the sonic shit Hendrix did can be considered noise as well.
Noise is inevitable in any mechanical recording device, even the most advanced digital ones. A slight noise floor, though nearly unperceptable, is the price for transforming a continuous analogue signal into a digital one consisting of a limited number of discreet value steps.

Austria and Germany are more than just similar. They often fight beside eachother in war and share history via the many people that migrated between the two countries. Austria was the first country Hitler annexed. Austria/Hungary started WW1 but the Germans stepped in to help them. They might as well be the same thing culturally in some respects. Austrian and German classical composers influenced eachother greatly.
-
Not arguing the historical data, of course. Just saying that all my German friends dislike Austrians personally, and vice versa. :-\

It makes me lol when metal heads proclaim to have a broad taste in music:
"I like death metal, power metal, dance metal, melodic death metal, black metal, speed metal, true metal, metalcore.....etc etc"
Listen to some music. ::)
As for noise, my concept of noise isn't very complex, I was just being an arse.
I was using the word noise in the sense of sound pollution.
Noise is incoherent sound.
Noise as a genre is simply experimental music made up of one or more noises.
Sonic Youth's 'Providence' from their album Daydream Nation would be an example of noise used in music. I believe the noise used is the sound of a tube amplifier cooking itself :)
Guitar solos are all about :wanker: in front of people.
I like noise guitar solos, because it isn't so much about the guitarist masturbating. The singer/guitarist from my metal band added a momentary off switch to his axe, and used it in his noise solos. They were not musical at all, following no tonality. They were just noise.
-
I like classical guitar solos.

I enjoy more than just metal as far as music goes, it is just the genre I choose to advertise listening to more than the others due to its ability to repel people and get overlooked. It is also what I play on guitar most of the time. As far as bands outside of metal that I enjoy, there are plenty like Alice in Chains, Primus, RHCP, Radiohead, and a host of other alternative/grunge bands from back when I started playing guitar (14 years ago). I also enjoy classic rock and have plenty of that on my iPod as well. Usually when I am listening to music I hit shuffle and there is an equal chance of hearing metal as is there to listen to classical or jazz. When I am hanging out with my drummer friend in my car or wherever its usually metal as it is the type of music we are writing. I have listened to every form of music at one time or another. I even had a time when I was listening to Bluegrass lol.
Noise is not a big deal to me either way as long as it fits in context with the song itself. Noise as a genre is fucked because the songs are mostly comprised of noises. Noise is anything that can't be expressed on sheet music technically.
Guitar solos are just a solo on yet another instrument. I like keyboard, bass, violin, sax and drum solos too. A solo is showcasing a particular instrument of course. I don't understand the problem with guitar solos, they can be quite expressive and interesting. There is nothing wrong with agressive displays of technique and speed as far as I am concerned. I love CoB's back and forth keyboard and guitar soloing. Necrophagist does similar things with 2 guitars and a bassist whose solos and play off of eachother.
I am not a big fan of Sonic Youth, they are ok but nothing special. Their songs are relatively simple with plenty of noise. They are overrrated. Fuzzy music that is both slow and simple. Everyone has heard someone burn out a tube amp at one time or another if they have been playing music long enough.
Your guitarist was trying to be like Tom Morello by having the off switch and doing noise solos all the time. Having no tonality is funny, but gets anoying after a while. Johnny Greenwood from Radiohead does his fair share of noise solos. Trey from Morbid Angel does a ridiculous amount of weird ass noise soloing. Vai has done his share as well. While I do enjoy outside of the box playing, I tend to like melodic scalar and modal playing more. Same goes with any instrument.
Didn't you dog metal because it is supposedly a bunch of noise? Then you advertise bands that use noise as a central theme or gimmick in their playing.
-
This band is German. It is Necrophagist and these are just a couple of solo sections from two different songs. The first song opens with a bass solo actually.

Lyrics are usually important to me
There are english translations online, but it's not the same because they're direct translations and obviously it's not all meant to be taken literally, so you can't fully understand it unless you understand German. But I like some of the lyrics as best as I can understand. I remember showing Sophie the lyrics site when she bought Mutter and Reise Reise.

Those English translations seem fucked-up to me! I'd never read them before, and I finally read one the other day. Can't remember which one, but it didn't exactly fit what I'd picked up from listening. My German isn't great, but I could still tell that the English translation was too literal. Made it less romantic and more just plain scary.
-
I think that too, if you read through thm while listening to it and trying to work it out yourself as you go along, it makes a bit more sense, as you can see where it's been direclty translated and is more literal than it's meant to be, but it still doesn't make sense unless you speak german properly I guess. and I don't lol
I ahve heard of Tanzwut, I've never listened to them though
I like a few german industrial/metal bands
-
German translated into English is always so fucked-up anyway, and it's usually hilarious! Especially because of the sentence structure. My German teacher told us to go to a German furniture website and click on the English translation. It was unbelievable. They'd just put it through some kind of program that translated word-for-word without changing the sentence structure. I'd never laughed so hard in my life - I used to go to the website all the time when I was in a shitty mood and needed a laugh! They finally corrected it though, and I was so disappointed.

So, I listened to the first one.

But, I'm not sure that it IS music.
And, I don't necessarily dislike.
Anything that can be scored musically on paper is defined as music. Your ethnocentric view seems very weak in regards to rap music as some of it can be performed by live musicians and is just another performing style. Rammstein doesn't really use rap beats, they are more electronica dance related. You said dance music is just noise earlier? That is fucking stupid. I will have to inform those that play the Waltz of your opinion. Same goes for jazz swing music, might as well get the Brian Setzer orchestra as well to stop playing. That is if you think dance music isn't music. Salsa and samba music might as well go to hell too lol.
Rammstein has a real person performing electronic drums, not a machine. Drum machines are lame to me. Anything programmed is lame and I prefer live performances as they can showcase the real physical skill of the performers if the material is complex and difficult enough.
Metal bands are shit live? Iron Maiden was good when I saw them. Lynyrd Skynyrd sucked a few of the times I saw them (though they were awesome one time). I have seen numerous mistakes at Bluegrass and Jazz festivals. Mistakes and getting screwed by the soundman are two different things entirely. I would say that metal bands and sucking live are not exclusive. 95% is a really high figure, seems you are highly biased in that regard.
The only live bands that I have seen that really sucked on more than one song were Incantation, Dope and the one time I saw Nirvana in 10th grade. Kurt Cobain was so wasted that all he did was barely do vocals, Pat Smear did most of the work on guitar. It was pathetic. The Breeders opened for Nirvana and someone threw their shoe at Kim Deal lol. The Breeders were more tight live than Nirvana, but the kids wanted them off stage and for Nirvana to play. That was the biggest live disappointment I have ever seen. That wasn't a metal band either.
Other than that Skynyrd's drummer seemed to not even play during a part of the solo when I saw them before a Jaguars game a few years ago. Really I haven't seen too many big fuck ups from the bigger bands. U2 was good when I saw them as were the Rolling Stones. Metallica and Pantera were both really tight live when I got to see them. I think I have been fortunate from a live show perspective as I have seen and heard bigger mistakes from live recordings (DVDs and CDs) than when I saw the band live myself. Emperor was perfect when I saw them, but they had the volume down on one guitar big time on the DVD my friend has (got fixed halfway through the first song).
You seem to dislike the distortion and tone of metal guitar. I prefer it to punk music and most rock music as far as distortion goes. It just has a much fatter bottom end that masks the basslines at times. Metal has an edge to its sound that can be overdone with distortion but every rock related genre always has bands with too much distortion. Distortion and the electric guitar were a part of the movement to more modern music. The actual musician is going to be taken out of music in some cases. Even the clean stuff is oversaturated with effects in some regards. Then you are just left with acoustic playing, which can get old after a while to me (just like everything else).
I prefer bands with people actually drumming. I didn't support Samael's movement to drum machines only for example. Sampling can be very overdone as well. Pro-tools and other modern recording software have changed the way music is made forever, no matter what you consider music or not. So much looping and cutting and pasting takes the real talent out of musicianship. You can't play that riff every time in a song flawlessly? Then don't record it and copy the damn thing. That is why you see so many shit live bands. Most pop/rock bands I see these days suck ass when they play live. Modern production is so fucking saturated with effects it is stupid. This goes for most genres of modern music. The people that are the most pathetic have to lip synch live of course.
-
When I made the claim of 'dance music' not being so,
obviously I didn't mean all music that people dance to.
I meant the (c)rap that goes by that name. Essentially
just beat, and no melody.
I have nothing against distortion, used within music.
Nor necessarily outside of music. I just won't qualify
it as being music, just because it's done on a musical
instrument. A guy blowing through a hole in a piano
ain't playing the piano.
-

Notes are notes, no matter if they are modified after the playing is done on the initial instrument. A clean guitar and distorted really aren't that different. Sythetic instruments as violin synth on the guitar or keyboard is different than just distortion. All of it is in the framework of music, despite your opinion on the matter. There are melodies in rap, but they are sampled mostly. Though there are a few rap artists (really hip-hop) that have instruments playing actual melodies, but they are more along R&B lines (and funk). Those are far and few between though. Rammstein has some melody within their songs. Do you have ears?
-
I hear quite a lot of melody in rammstein
I don't think I'd like them if I didn't
-

Most of it is synths and keyboards as far as the melodies. The guitars just play chord progressions mostly.
-
I mentioned that there is music INSIDE of the
ramstein pieces (though not what I had heard
before). Just as movies with soundtracks though,
having music inside of something doesn't make
it music.

Alex,
When I say metal bands are shit live, I'm referring to sound, not performance.
They may play everything right, but I can't hear it all properly so I don't admire it.
A clean guitar and distorted aren't much different? There is a huge difference in sound.
You even say so yourself.
Your views on electronic/programmed music are heavily biased.

I hear everything properyly, maybe I just hear the notes better I guess. It doesn't sound that washed out to me, more angry and biting in a way. The notes and general frequencies are the same. A good PA system and properly miked amps make a world of difference. Rock bands have fuzzy ass over distorted stuff too, and it can wash out their sound as well in regards to added noise to the notes. Sometimes it is more washy and noisy than metal distortion. The melody should sound slick and liquidy to me with the right tone settings regardless of distortion or not.
As far as playing they aren't a huge difference. Distorted playing can be the same as acoustical, you don't have to make special arrangements in most cases. You can put delay and reverb on a clean guitar sound and make it sound different than it would normally. I hate vocalists that soak their singing in reverb lol. I hate the electronic pitch correction even more. Takes less talent to sound perfect.
Biased towards actual live musicianship of course. Starting a drum machine isn't the same as playing it yourself. Playing with a group of musicians is different than programming stuff. You have to be a tight unit with a focused sound. You don't have to play that accurately every time live as a group and not just one DJ.

I admit I've made sweeping generalisations about metal bands sounding shit live, but I have been disappointed seeing bands I like (for example, and not limited to, Metallica, Parkway Drive) playing live. I never said rock bands were immune to this either!
Delay and reverb are poor examples to use against distortion, as they don't colour the tone in nearly the same way.
Vocals soaked in reverb often sound like they are singing in a toilet, I am in agreeance with you there. However, it depends on the quality of the reverb-device. Electronic pitch correction as it is often heard is used for the eerie electronic sounding effect more than perfecting pitch. So, bagging this is the same as bagging effects on other instruments (e.g. guitar distortion).
Your arguments against electronic music have nothing against the music itself, just the performance.
I could argue that there is as much technique required in performing live on computer (e.g. using Ableton Live software) and djing. It is just different to instruments which have existed up until the later half of the 20th century.
Be scared of new technology ooooOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooOOOOOOOo!

Sorry I haven't been reading the thread much does that help?

The performance is everything. Playing something in the studio correctly once where you can do multiple takes is different than playing it right every time live in front of an audience. People rarely perform live on a computer, mostly just starting up samples and such in time with the drum machine they programmed. That isn't the same as having feel and precision while playing on an instrument. You can hit a button to start a sample, but it doesn't mean you could ever play what was sampled in the first place. Basically if you can't play it yourself, get off the fucking stage. I do know electronic music is the future somewhat as almost everything has been done in music as far as notes go.
Metallica was pretty good when I saw them, no mistakes and their sound was decent for the acoustical properties of the venue. Most clubs are shit acoustically. You can't always see bands in an acoustically sound ampitheatre unfortunately.
Distortion just colors the sound, adds a flavour or spice on top of the meat that would be the actual guitar signal. Bagging on vocals is different as it is the most human of all instruments and modifying the sound properties of vocals is one of the most dishonest things a person can do as far as musical integrity goes. It makes people with shitty voices actually sound decent. I don't like that. Distortion on a guitar does not do the same thing, as if you suck you will still suck badly with distortion (can make it worse in some cases). Guitarists don't need pitch correction to keep in key or hold a note lol. Real professional vocalists shouldn't either.

You obviously have no idea about what is involved in performing a live electronic set so there's no point arguing with you.
Originally we were talking about music anyway, not performance. You have employed the 'scarecrow' argument technique.
So modifying the human voice is bad, but modifying a guitar signal is good? Do you think metal would sound good with acoustic guitars?
Just wondering if you actually play guitar. I can tell you that when I play guitar clean, it sounds a lot worse than playing with distortion, which masks a lot of inconsistencies. I am not a very good guitar player but like to pick up my brother's axe now and then.

Metal can sound good with acoustic or clean guitar if it is played really well. It wouldn't be as agressive or heavy though. I play quite a bit actually, and I play both with and without distortion (more on my acoustic than my electric). When I get time I will record some crap with the pedal I just got recently. Metal doesn't have to be distorted in my opinion, just there is a "metal" type of high gain that is generally accepted. It isn't like you can't play Metallica on an acoustic guitar or with a clean signal on an electric, just don't expect it to sound quite as heavy. The guitar solos are what would change as some of the things like pinch harmonics would not come out as well (along with some of the really fast legato playing). Distortion doesn't hide the bigger mistakes, and it responds to inconsitent playing. It isn't like if I fuck up and don't palm mute something once, the distortion makes a sound like palm muting for me or anything. If I don't do it right, it will still sound like crap. It doesn't magically fix my 1/2 step bend and make it a full step or make my vibrato smoother. It makes hammer-ons, pull-offs and trills easier to hear and that is about it.
I do know what is involved as I have friends that are DJs and it is quite a bit of management. Even when not doing excessive scratching there is some work in mixing a live set. It isn't the same as a band, group performance is more impressive as it isn't easy to coordinate a group of individuals all the time. Orchestras are even more impressive, though they require conductors. Performance is all that matters in the end after the composition has taken place. Anyone can play a riff correctly once out of 100 times then copy and paste that shit on pro-tools until you have enough to fill a meter or however long you were going to play that riff. Then you have a track for fills and such. While recording you can have multiple takes, and that is what makes live performance 1000000 times more valuable. You only have one take live, if you fuck up or do something wrong you are fucked and will have to improvise. There is no second take.

Putting another vid up.

:intressant: I don't really feel that way about anything anymore, so you are a lucky person.

I guess. It's just the narcissist in me though.
I need that attention.
-
What kind of music do you dance to? Where do you go to dance?
-
Thursdays, it's 80's music.
That's where the fans are strongest.
Other nights, local bands. But, the bands
are the only ones who usually really see me,
since I'm just on the floor. I've got three which
are addicted to me dancing for them.
Quite a few who've seen me once though,
and come up to say something.

Here's the Foo Fighters video I tried to show you before - the song is Long Road to Ruin. I think it's really you!
-
Nah. I'm prettier, without the beard,
than he is.
-
But you have to admit...that's a pretty good imitation of you he's doing! You're the one who mentioned narcissism!
I love those bands by the way - thanks for the links! Good music.
-
I thought that was just being
sweet.
Can't really see narcissism in others.
They're so inferior.
-
 I crack up every time I see that video now. Not just how he looks...the whole story just reminds me of all your lovelorn tales!
-
He cries like I do,
I'll give him that.
-
I got to see this. Please get someone to make a video of you dancing your so passionate about it I have to see
-
Seconded!! We need to marvel at your passion dancing!!
-
I have no friends.
But, I've been caught on film,
a few times. Most of my older
pics are WHILE dancing, so you get some
idea.
But, I'll see if I can get a copy of something.
Just, asking is hard. Nearly impossible for me.
-
I've been on tv
-
Really??!! What's the story?
-
The local news people came to my school
I was only in the background though
Also the tv people were at the shopping centre near me once and I walked past on the way to HMV :kinanna:
-
That's cool! Glad they never filmed me at the mall or at school - I'd have been going :finger:, captured forever on film!
-
My car was on TV They were doing an interview on the side of the highway after a major crash as I drove by it only showed from the door handles down though
-
I was on the jumbotron once.
Don't think I've ever actually been on
TV though.

I think Cal is pretty cool. I registered on his forum and lurked a little, but just didn't quite feel like I fit in there.

He invited me over there but I never did register.

I don't go enough to keep up with the changes
-
I thought his forum was pretty quiet.

They change names constantly and themes

I was a full member on it when it first formed but deleted myself. I got another account but haven't been adminised on that one cause I hardly ever log on. As parts said, the constat changes are tiring even for me :P

You're very sedate these days. I also read elsewhere it looked like you made mention of having a wife recently and taking her to AZ. Does that mean you are reconciled with your old wife, or you remarried?
-
Nah, I got a newer model, but it's not as good.

Nah, I got a newer model, but it's not as good.
Harsh! Why go there then? Seems like not worth the effort.
Unless you are like one of my exes...chose someone who spoke minimal English to minimise having to have too many conversations.

Loneliness, I think. Then some guilt. And realism: I'm never going to have as good as I once did.
We get along well enough. It's not a path I would have chosen, but it will have to do.

Ahhh, your misspent youth, Cal.
I wish you didn't seem so melancholy about it...I thought that was the whole reason to get hitched was that the person actually adds something to your life, not makes you think there was a better alternative path.
I mean, you chose the path?
-
Well, had my will been strong enough, yes. I would inflict it on the world.

Managed to get some info on a piece of property my family sold back in the 80's. It was described as 'a shack'
It was badly run down though. Had to be demolished and rebuilt.

Not sure what "Chirp" is, but I love my dog.
Have not had him long, about six months. He is so happy, playful, ornery and becoming a part of this "pack," fitting in, but making his adjustments to all of us.
He has brought a lot of laughs to this household in his short time here.
I love my dog!
CHIRP! :roar:

On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do you think you are like Diogenes??
-
2. I've some cynic tendencies, but he was a showboat about it.
My 'minimal' life consists of doing without things that are more unpleasant than otherwise.
I don't believe that my path would work for most people.

No. That's just the space I chose to stare out.
It's something I do when thinking.
