Title: Ask Alex179 anything.

Yeah I have pretty much said a good deal of stuff between this board and WP that tells you something about me.   If you have any other questions then go ahead.

Your question asking thread isn't even on the first page of Ask Away threads currently.   I am lazy and only look at the first few unread threads in a given forum of interest.  It wasn't intentional and its not like I have been here that long haha.   I am pretty sure you know that and just messing with me.

Right now marajuana, it has been my constant vice from age 15 to 28 except for one year of total sobriety.    The most addictive thing I ever did that scared me to the point that it would consume my life and devour my soul was cocaine.    Go on a couple of 3 month coke binges and waste tons of money and you will not thank me later.  Learning to cook up my own freebase wasn't really good either.   I could have equity in a house by now lol.   I enjoyed just about all the drugs I tried or did for any extended period of time.   The biggest pleasures in life sometimes can be the ones that are the worst for you.

Yes...messing with you...sort of. I don't mind being asked questions even though I am the Enigma.

So....when are you going to get an avatar? What would you choose?

I have no avatar or sig picture on any of the 10 or so odd forums I visit (never have in my 14+ year internet history).   It makes the page load slower and you have to scroll more usually.   I would rather get photoshop or flashmx and make my own sig since I know how to work those fairly well (I can get both via a torrent or a friend).  A good flash sig would wreck some sites if they had support.    I am just lazy about getting certain apps (I can get CS3 though sometime next week).   I pirate and play games too much to do that crap.

I could use my RL picture, I would have to borrow my dad's camera because I haven't had a camera in years and I don't like being in or taking pictures.   I would rather draw or paint something (would rather use my imagination more).   My Dad is the only person in the family that takes pictures and he sucks complete ass at doing it.   RL photos as avatars are overdone on this forum.  That is not the case on most forums I visit.

Using it sparingly, well PCs period.  I was more of a console gamer at that time.  It only took almost 1-2 years before I got pretty damnn addicted.   Only then I would call it whoring.   That and my piracy habits started at that time as well.

I want to note I was playing PC games way before then.   I played Kings Quest IV, Wing Commander, X-Wing, Doom and several other games when they were released long ago.   I didn't play those on the internet obviously.   I just wasn't as into the PC as a gaming machine when I first started using the internet.   I was playing the fuck out of consoles and Dungeons and Dragons (2nd edition) with some friends and other people.  No time for PC games and a little time to get acquainted with the internet before my addiction really started.

A little GURPs (not much) and some of the Marvel Superheroes game (had one expansion).  Dungeons and Dragons was really fun, even did an evil aligned party more than once.   Those are the extent of my actual RPGs, that is not video games.   I have played war and strategy games with my father a few times as well.   He is into Risk and other similar Avalon Hill type games.

Not really.   No physical harm to others.   Just selling shit I should have kept and stealing some mainly.  Me and some friends stole from stores mainly, and some from breaking into apartments.   Good way to get shot in the U.S. by people that are rightfully defending their home.   My friend sold his drums and I sold my Les Paul (I had another crap guitar still not worth selling) and several other valuable things before we got to the point where we were stealing.  It would have likely only gotten worse.   That would constitute as being truly awful I guess.   This was maybe a year after my first court ordered trip to rehab.   The whole stealing thing lasted a little over a month, but the big ass binge lasted for maybe 4 months with rare tortuous days without coke sprinkled in there.

Nope that sounds like something out of Boogie Nights.  There was a scene like that in the movie.  I tried to hide my addiction to coke as much as possible, just like the other addictions.   I tell people freely about them on the internet though.   I don't look like a drug abusing metalhead, that is by design so that I encounter less cops and the like.   It would be hard for someone to realisticallly discern that I was a drug addict who needed money and is stealing shit.   They would have to see me stealing and/or abusing coke to know that.   Which was extremely unlikely.   I have only worked with gay people at the mall in department stores, they didn't really bother me and joked more than anything.   I just don't care about their lifestyle much, that doesn't mean they bother me.   It isn't a reason for me to hate someone.   I have plenty of those already.

Title: Re: Ask Alex179 anything.

A couple but nothing serious.   Right now I am in a band of sorts, we have 4 songs written completely and working on the 5th.   These aren't my actual compositions, more of a group effort (well 3 people including me).   The current drummer is not up to snuff and we are probably getting a new one.   My friend says he wants me to record bass (the remaining parts), guitar and later on keyboard tracks.   I have only played guitar in bands, our bassist had to go to Iraq because he is a Marine (needless to say he is not really happy about going back).   Right now we have a 4 track recorder so we are just doing 2 guitars bass and drums on the recordings.   When we get a real mixer or studio time we will record vocals and other assorted shit depending on the song (he wants samples and synths as well).  I am not totally into the style of deathcore metal my friend writes, but I can play it and it could be a good deal worse.   I have changed his musical ideas quite a bit though.

will you post a sampling of your sound sometime?
Title: Re: Ask Alex179 anything.
Post by: Alex179 on June 28, 2007, 09:16:26 AM
Sure I guess.   I need something to record crap on my PC myself, my friend's 4 track sucks imo and it is behind what could be done with a PC.   We are just lazy in that regard and play video games too damn much.    I could record some crap I play when screwing around, riffs and chords and melodies in flamenco and phyrigian minor for example.    Been messing with that more recently.   Get tired of the really blues related pentatonic stuff.   Maybe in a month or two I will buy something to connect my guitar to my PC for recording.  I could record myself playing someone elses material too, but I usually prefer to play my own crap or screw around.

Much easier to take a few pics of my artwork (paintings and collages are too big for a scanner).   Maybe short vid of me playing something.   I don't consider myself the greatest guitarist in the world anyways, but I don't suck that is for sure.   When I was playing FFXI for 3 or so odd years I probably picked up my guitar a total of 5 times lol.   I just started getting my chops back imo.   Bleh need to borrow my dad's camera anyways.   Been putting that off for years, almost 4 years of FFXI and my friends only saw one pic of me taken by another LS member at a getogether.

whats yer favorite bm band?

That is difficult.   I am not a gigantic blackmetal fan, but my favourite overall would have to be Emperor (I even like Prometheus some).   Dimmu Borgir if you still consider them blackmetal is up there.   The last Gehenna CD I heard was pretty cool.    Most of the bands I really liked back when I was in highschool (1993-97) have changed drastically and aren't really just blackmetal anymore.  Samael and Satyricon changed their sound the most in my opinion as they got more and more interested in electronica (hell Samael used a drum machine on Passage and sounds like more like a heavier version of Rammstein now).   I read Ihsahn is into DJing just like Satyr has been doing for a while.   Getting my friend Matt into blackmetal and CoB was what convinced him that keyboards were ok to use in Metal haha (he was already a big synths/sample fan though).

I am more of a fan of deathmetal/grindcore bands like Children of Bodom, Carcass, Death (RIP Chuck), Morbid Angel, and Deicide than just blackmetal alone.   I like all kinds of music, but I listen to and play metal primarily.   I got into thrash bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Sepultura really early because my friend had an older brother who got us into that stuff when we were in 5th grade.

Internet friendships -- what do you think of them?

Internet friendships -- what do you think of them?

I have had pretty good ones, but I don't talk to the people enough anymore.    I have met a total of 3 people in real life that I knew from gaming online.   I am staying off of AIM atm because there are about 12 people who still play FFXI that are on my buddy list (another 20 or so that quit FFXI and play WoW now lolol).    Some of which are great people that I would be friends with if I actually lived near them.   I have told them things I would only tell my closest friends in real life actually.   That is saying a good deal because I hide basically nothing anyways haha.  Internet friendships are fine, just lacking the RL hanging out aspect.   Using vent/teamspeak helped most people socially in MMOs.   I didn't do it too much because I hate the sound of my voice and I am shy as hell.

I just don't want to be tempted to play yet another MMORPG.   I have played so many of those its ridiculous (FFXI, WoW, CoH, Lineage II, Horizons, D&D online) they take up way too much free time.   When I play an MMO, I lose my other hobbies/interests almost fully.   They aren't worth the time investment as actual games, the only thing worth a damn from MMOs were the friends I made.

Have you ever been let down by any of the internet friends you had?

Yes I have.  They have lives that they need to attend to and RL > (insert online game or whatever here).   Other online games and priorities are less understandable I guess.   I know I have let a few of them down myself and I felt bad about it.   Well depending on what you mean by let down.   I am talking about in an MMO, not just a chatroom.    My friends have helped me a ton in FFXI (well some in other MMOs too).   As far as squabbles, I have had a couple that were justified.   Mainly I get into online fights with people who aren't my friends, and it is very intentional trolling.  There obviously have been more than a few cases of someone not knowing I was joking or me not knowing whether they were joking or not also.   My FFXI friends that weren't already playing WoW really cried about me playing WoW.   I let those people down supposedly by playing another game.

Well I was let down by a former friend of mine. We sent each other presents and stuff, and we even shared our mobile/cellphone numbers. I thought we had a good relationship until she dropped the bombshell that she doesn't value internet friendships after five fucking months we've known each other online. I was fucking annoyed by this because I don't lead people on that way.
Title: Re: Ask Alex179 anything.
Post by: Alex179 on July 10, 2007, 11:41:07 AM
Well that sucks.   She took the relationship that far as to send presents and exchange cell numbers and after 5 months she is over it?   There is more there than just her and internet relationships.   Why the hell did she send you a present and give you her cell number if she doesn't value internet relationships lol.   You never know what happened in real life to spark her revelation after 5 months that she doesn't value internet relationships.   Usually it is because someone finds something in real life that they value more (easier to because it is real life afterall).

Probably a grand total of 5 people (out of thousands) that I played FFXI with have my cell number.   Only spoken to most of them twice, a couple of them several times.   The two that I spoke to several times live in Jacksonville, I didn't know them before I started the game though.   We just hung out a few times at bars and houses.  I started playing FFXI with a group of 3 other RL friends.   I don't seem to have valued internet friendships as much as you.

I guess you have had some nasty run ins with Koreans and/or Chinese haha.   I don't get along well with farmers/RMT either in MMOs.   WoW wasn't as bad as FFXI in that regard.   Much more hostility and racism there.   I have no problems with asian people irl though.

I don't tend to look directly at them and the light they provide doesn't hurt me really.   I have heard them buzzing but the sound doesn't overwhelm me.   I have a flourescent light right over my head right now at work haha.

Not right now as these lights were recently replaced.   Maybe if I was really trying to listen, but my coworker has country music playing on her radio and sadly that is drowning out any noise the lights might make.   I really hate country music too.

What's your opinion on FFXII?
Title: Re: Ask Alex179 anything.
Post by: Alex179 on July 24, 2007, 12:08:06 PM
Oh boy FFXII.

Well it was to me pretty much an offline FFXI that allowed you to bot (automate) all of your characters, and removed the skill based enmity and skillchain + magic burst aspect of FFXI.    The story was cool in that it wasn't the typical love story SE has had for most of the last few FFs.   Gabranth, Balthier and Baasch were by far the most interesting characters.   The worst part of the game was killing the Bombshell (forgot name of mob) 50+ times to get Yagyu darkblade to drop.   Then the 3 hour fight with Yazmat was a disappointment as well imo.

It was fun at the start, but after a while my gambits made the game mostly a cakewalk aside from a few emergency situations in some of the hardest fights.   Overall I found the character development to be lacking and I only could tolerate a few of the characters.   The Espers are mostly worthless, even when you get the final one after Ultima which is great but nothing compared to what you can do with the MP yourself.   Quickenings were overpowered at the start of the game as well.

Well it is just far worse than my right eye.   I could have lazer eye surgery and my left eye would still require glasses/contacts for even driving.    My right eye isn't quite as bad.   Right now they don't make Accuvue contacts powerful enough to make my left eye have perfect vision either.   The most powerful setting on the machine they have at the eye doctor does not correct my left eye haha.   I am legally blind basically in that eye.

My right eye has gotten worse over the years, but it has some work to do to catch up to my left.   I was more than a little disappointed to hear I would have to wear contacts/glasses still if I got lazer eye surgery.   My parents were going to get me lazer eye surgery 2 years ago for Christmas, but I declined due to that fact... it just isn't worth it if I still have to wear glasses to do everything.   I fucking hate my eyes.

I used to wear Accuvue contacts. Can't now because of the need for prismatics.
Are you plus or minus?

I have no idea in that regard.   I haven't worn them in a year maybe.   I am nearsighted, so I see stuff close better than far away.   I have bifocal glasses with the option to have it so the lines do not show (I don't see so good close up anymore either).   That is because my vision is absolute shit to the point where I can't read this 17 inch monitor at all with either eye until I get about 14 inches from it.   I have a new glasses prescription since the last time I got contacts, so they are behind in prescription anyways.

If you are nearsighted, then you would have a minus prescription.
I do wonder if the optometrist has told you what your vision may be like in the future. I also wonder if an ophthalmologist would be able to help you. Have you had eyesight problems for your whole life?
Title: Re: Ask Alex179 anything.

Yeah my entire life.   I wore glasses when I was 4 or 5 years old.   I have a good eye doctor, I just don't see him much anymore.    Last time I got glasses I went to Wal-Mart lol.   They get the job done and are the ones I am wearing in the picture thread.   I probably should see good old Dr. Watts again soon and see what his opinion is again.   I haven't seen an opthalmologist before that I know of, I will have to look into that.

How long have you been wearing glasses/contacts yourself?

Yes, I really recommend you do this. If he is not a specialist, he may be able to refer you to one. Eyesight is precious, you should look after it as best you can. :)

I had eye operations for a squint when I was a baby and started wearing glasses at about the age that you did. I also had to wear patches over my right eye to make the left eye work when I was about five and it drove me nuts. My left eye is not as bad as yours, I don't think, but I was told that if I lost my right eye for any reason, I wouldn't be allowed to drive.

Has your vision changed much over the years? I have learnt that during puberty, eyesight can change a lot. It also changes for almost everyone at about the age of 40.

It has changed quite a bit as I have astigmatism.   I had to wear hard contact lenses in Highschool to supposedly maintain the shape of my eye somewhat.   Those were a bitch compared to the soft ones.
Title: Re: Ask Alex179 anything.
Post by: renaeden on July 25, 2007, 08:28:42 AM
I have never worn the hard contacts but I have heard that they can be blinked out. I wouldn't be able to stop myself from doing that if I wore them.  :P

I have astigmatism quite badly in my right eye. It's weird that my right eye has the worst vision while my left eye is not too bad but it's so weak.

Thanks for answering my questions, by the way.

Yeah it is really difficult imo.   Well it is for me.   I just don't want to be like I used to be.   I can shut the door on people and never speak to them again far too easily.  Very good at burning bridges.   I am making an effort to be nicer to people on this site and other AS sites just because the people have problems I can relate to.  I am still a huge apathetic asshole on FFXI sites haha.   I hurt people there regulary and have to end up apologizing (again extremely hard for me to do).

Do you hear that buzzing or humming?

Not right now as these lights were recently replaced.   Maybe if I was really trying to listen, but my coworker has country music playing on her radio and sadly that is drowning out any noise the lights might make.   I really hate country music too.

But how often do you hear the lights (I don;t mean the ones in your office, I mean lights in stores, places, buildings, etc)? All the time, sometimes, rarely?

I have heard the buzzing/humming before, but it isn't that often actually.   I am not often in places where there are those types of lights.   If I am I don't intend on staying long, other than work.   There are so many other annoying sounds in the office though that distract me.   Mostly the printers.  All of the noises matter very little if I am daydreaming at all (which happens a lot).

I can't because I am at work.   Maybe when I get in front of my actual PC again.   I doubt that will be tonight.   Probably going to rent something for 360 and play some random game online with my friend Matt.   He doesn't get to use the headset due to his inability to censor himself.

I did and I decided it was like most other MMOs.   I don't know if I can really devote the time to it that is necessary.   Well I got hardcore into FFXI end game and did almost everything there was to do.   WoW just seems like yet another timesinkfest with the end game instances.

That and the friends I made there were far and few between.   I mainly played with RL people I know and some FFXI friends, which is why I ended up with characters on like 8 different servers haha.   I know so many people that play or have played WoW that it is really disturbing actually.   I might end up playing it again someday, right now I have people trying to talk me into coming back to FFXI lol.... I doubt that will happen as playing WoW might be more likely because it is less hardcore than FFXI.

Just my bond number in my fraternity.   179th person initiated at UCF.   It means something, but it isn't the most significant thing.    I just add it onto things like my name or a name relating to a video game (Eternus my FFXI character for example).    There are a few other numbers I use as a suffix but those are far and few between (several predating college).

or, you know, come back to the darkside.

I think it is about finding the right people. I wasn't that enchanted, at first...I didn't care for many of the people I was guilded with...I started my own guild...and now I love playing. if I had to be forced to guess, I would say the majority of my minion....errr...guildies are aspie. not that it matters...but I feel a measure of relatability with them that makes playing fun.

speaking of.....I am on a laptop right now...and on WoW on my main computer..and I just disconnected over there. Eep.

No recycling.   I am number 179, I have no clue what number they are up to by now haha.   My fraternity wasn't that large and we didn't try to be.   We didn't fit the stereotype either, other than the fact that we threw parties and such.   UCF has 30,000+ students, most are not in fraternities.   There are fraternities with 100+ members and others with only 20+ active members.    My status with my fraternity is that of an Alumni, but I could join up the chapter here at UNF when I start in the fall if I felt like it.    I won't have the free time to do so sadly.

Most of them do illegal things involving a different sort of party to the one you are talking about, some of it very sinister from what I understand. Does everyone have a frat at the US, in the uk we dont really have them at our unis.

Working in the gaming industry would be awesome.   Music would be great as well.   I wouldn't mind being a pornstar either lmao.  I doubt any of those would really be ideal though.

Ideal would be probably something that I could do with as little as social interaction as possible.   Something I could be totally absorbed in.   I don't need to be super materialistic and be a rich bastard or anything.   I would rather be happy with what I am doing and my role in things.

What have you enjoyed doing in the past?  I need too add more time in the morning to work out as it seems to make my mornings more energetic.   That is difficult for me as I am really not a morning person, much more of a night owl.   Not lately as I have forced myself to go to bed early as I work mornings.  I have to fight the depressed napping when I think about stuff too much.  Find something else to do quick that is at least somewhat enjoyable (I play PC/video games or guitar).

If GA thinks you are happier, then that is good news.  It should be encouraging at least.
