Title: The cheap bastards thread!
Post by: "couldbecousin" on November 23, 2013, 08:59:44 PM
Today I could have spent $10 on cab fare to work, $30 on the new magazines and
tabloids at the store, then $10 more for cab fare home.  Instead, I took the bus to work
( $1.50 ), bought no magazines, and walked home.  I saved $48.50 in just one day.
Now I am drinking free  tap water instead of $4-a-bottle juice.  Cheapness rules.  :2thumbsup:

Fun thread!
The other day I was out with my aspie friend, he wanted to look for something for his game-console, while I was broke and bored. He offered me 100 krones (20 bucks) to buy something, which I politely turned down, cus I found it a bit uncomfortable to just take money from a friend :D
Then I realized, I need pens... So, I checked back on that offer, then picked out two pens, each one close to 40 krones, totalling to 80-some.

So, I go to the cashier, and she goes "its two for the price of one!" so I thought "neato!" and picked one more! Thats three pens, 40-ish each, totally to 80-some.
I give her the money.
She gives me back 82 krones.
What?
I just smiiiiled, tuuurned around, my friend said somethingorother to me, and all I said was "come, come, come, let's go, let's go!"

Three pens for 18 krones. Not bad at all!

I am still drinking some Dunkin' Donuts coffee that I brought home from work the other day.  FREE.   :2thumbsup:

There was this artsy-fartsy cafe in town long ago. It's a small town, and Norway is super-wealthy, so... cheap artsy intellectual cafes aren't really our cup of tea. We want things posh and expensive, so once it was gone, it stayed gone :'(
But it was my favorite place, and I often knew the staff working there.

One time, the son of the owner, a childhood friend of mine worked there, and casually asked if I wanted something.
As a sortof blunt joke, I said "I want a complete kebab-plate, I want it for free, and I want it now!"
And I got it.
:D

Same cafeteria I also was given a warm glass of honey-milk once I told them I wasn't feeling good :M

I can see why you miss that place, they made you feel at home there.

I can eat for free at work, so I will stop buying junk food and live on what I can get for free!  :green:

I can see why you miss that place, they made you feel at home there.

It was a fun lil place with lots of personality :M we used to sneak down to the bathrooms there, and roll joints. The staff would ask us what we were up to, but we wouldn't reveal :M We'd then sneak out behind, and puff it up. Later we were told a McDonalds worker right across the alley would regularily watch us, and sigh with longing to join in :D

Ah! At the same cafeteria I also did my first (and only) pickpocket attempt :D Just a test of the theory! I did it the easy way, and snuck the wallet from the jacket of a friend of mine, but it was indeed remarkable how tunnel-visioned he was, once engaged in conversation :D
You are so alert of yourself, and you then project that onto others "I'm alert, so they're alert" but countless experiments show that when people focus, you can _litterally_ walk elephants past them and they won't notice. Distraction is so deceptively easy! Also - clothes don't have nerves! You may think they're absolutely gonna notice cus it's "their body", and whenever you rumage around your own pockets - you are totally aware - and again, project "I can feel my hand in my own pocket. Surely someone else would feel my hand in their pocket." but they won't, cus THEIR hand, and their mind, is elsewhere!
It is... dangerously easy.. in reality.. to pickpocket someone :D

So, took his wallet, relaxed, we left (here it's common to pay at the counter, not wait for the check), an hour later he suddenly stopped, and begun to frantically pat his pockets :D
I feigned worry, and dragged it out, we ran back to the cafe, we harassed the staff, and we checked every corner :'D
After we got outside, and his hope was lost, I returned the wallet to him :] He was not amused :] I was :]

When I go out, instead of paying money for a drink from the train station kiosk, I fill an old Coke Zero bottle with cans of Coke Zero at home and put it in the fridge for a while before I leave. Saves me a bit of money I think.

2 wire framed light up deer...1 I will use for parts for the other 4 I am bound to pick up, 1 fully working that will go in the yard...on a timer of course (that a neighbor gave me ;)).

Trash picked on the way to WalMart for milk and groceries.

The Cuisinart coffee maker I picked up last week was beyond help, but the pot will sell for $9-12 and the filter holder $5-7 + shipping of course.

:indeed:

Saw a bit of that too.  About a lady telling her BF to pee in bottles and empty those in the woods, to save on water in the toilet. Totally nuts. She had more revolting ideas.

Yesterday I got offered a free bush of carrots. The green had gone bad. Autumn damage, fallen leaves of trees amongst it. The carrots them self were very fresh, with enough turgor pressure to kinda jump when cutting them.
They made for a perfect side dish for a meal with vegetables not loved by all.

Yuck. I'm definitely not that cheap.

Neighbor always told me I was the Martha Stewart of trash picking. Everything I pick up is inspected, cleaned, fixed and then sorted to be sold, gifted, used, or not deemed worthy before it even enters the house.

Is there junk out all year round where you live, Icequeen?

Here we have a couple of weeks each year that I call Junk out the Front time. It looks pretty bad with piles of junk everywhere. Last time I put my old futon mattress out and the next day it was gone, someone must have picked it up. Once we got a reasonable computer chair, however, two years later it became part of the junk pile.

I can't answer for her but this is how things are where I live.  Each town has it's own rules mine they have bulky waste pick up twice a year, one town over you just put it out with your normal trash and they take it, other towns want you to call if your going to put out a lot.  I have found that in general the towns where you put it out with your regular garbage pick up look a lot better, in my town people save up tons of stuff for the two times they pick it up a year and the piles can be enormous and they can sit out there awhile before they are gotten to, on the other hand the town next door rarely has giant piles and they are all gone usually by noon on garbage day because you don't have to save it up just getting rid of the stuff a little at a time.

I didn't know towns could differ so much from each other over there. Here it is the same for everyone within the Perth metro area. Our big rubbish gets collected once a year, in the meantime it goes into our bins if it fits and is collected every week by automated trucks. Our bins look like this:

That is our recycling bin, the general ones have green lids.

Every town is different on a lot of things around here it's somewhat of a pain in the ass.  We have a giant recycle bin that looks like yours but it's all dark green they pick up every two weeks and we provide our own garbage cans that they get picked up weekly.  Some towns don't have pick up at all and you have to arrange it with a private contractor or bring it yourself to the transfer stations.
Title: Re: The cheap bastards thread!
Post by: renaeden on November 24, 2013, 11:48:28 PM
I would hate to have to take rubbish myself to a transfer station. We get our bins emptied as part of what we get through paying council rates every year. And the same as you, our recycling stuff gets picked up every two weeks, though I would like it to be every week because our recycling bin gets filled up quicker than our regular rubbish one.

We have 2 different trash companies that do the hauling in the area, no set days for bulky pickup, so you never know what might be out. The college town just below has a clean up schedule for when the kids leave to help with the mess somewhat, and they have recycling, but anything goes really, if it's not in a recycle bin they won't recycle it, so it's fair game. No recycling here in my area.

No bins, trash cans, missing lids, most of it bagged and at the curb because they tend to leave the cans out in the road and run over the lids.

It's different here per council too. Where I live, I have to bring the big stuff to the junk station. Pain in the arse indeed, because I have no car. So, once a year or so I  :eyelash: to my brother, and he will take it for me.
The stuff that can be recycled will be picked up by a thrift shop. The small things you can put outside for them, on set dates, that's when they pick up chemical waste too. For bigger things you call, and then they collect it, but, if they think it is not good enough, they will leave it, and you have to either take it back in, or get rid of it quickly. Leaving trash out in the streets can bring you a fine too soon.

We've got similar bins as Ren has. A grey one for rubbish, and a green one for everything that can be composted. Copmpanies have one with a blue lid for paper too. Other waste paper is collected by the local schools, they fund their school outings with that a bit. For glass we have glass containers. They are not as rewarding as they used to be, now that they are underground. When they were above the ground, the noise would be tremendous. Great way to get rid of a bad mood, getting rid of all the glass.

We used to have bagged rubbish at the curb and the rubbish people used to have to pick it all up manually, they must have gotten pretty fit. It was switched to the automated system in 1989.

When I was a kid, we had two of these per household. (http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc445/hetiswat/220px-Vuilnisemmer_zps80fe6ca8.jpg) (http://s1212.photobucket.com/user/hetiswat/media/220px-Vuilnisemmer_zps80fe6ca8.jpg.html)

They were used for a long time, and were really heavy to deal with for garbage men. Then there was the garbage bags. That was just gross, especially if the bags had been put out too early, and cats or wildlife had raided them over night. Now we have the containers like you have. Till a few years ago they were manually put at the back of the truck and then emptied via a leverage system. Now it is all done automatically.

Notice the can toss maneuver. He didn't throw the lids far enough though.

The Garbage Man can (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siEpf5SL3Hw#)

They have them on a tight schedule around here, and I've seen days when it's one driving the truck and that's it.

GF's daughter doesn't eat the hot dog buns.  I bring them home and accumulate a few in the freezer and make garlic bread.

Bring water from home in a Dasani bottle I got from a friend.

My GF brings me her coupons from the paper when she's cut out the ones she wants.

Shop the bent and dent section (when they have it) of the grocery store.

Buy men's shoes because they're wider and sturdier than women's shoes.

Put bubble wrap (picked up free here and there) in the windows to insulate them.

Once a week I take a soapless bath and shower.

etc. etc.

You are lucky that you do not work at a Best Buy store.

Lucky you.

IN contrast to the miserable fact that we do not have a coffee maker in our break room, I have been able to convince a few of the "mgts" (read as midgets or management, hats off to RAW) to "display"  a Kuerig single cup coffee maker to the public (in an actual attempt to sell more of this particular product, you see) to a great deal of satisfaction to all who enjoy coffee.

Every winter, it just seems like the thing to do. We sell appliances, so serve coffee to those who have lost appliances in winter.

I am still working on it for this year, but the rock is softening and the hard place is giving in! We will have coffee in a few days!  I just KNOW IT!!

More on topic, I got a whole bag of "oliebollen" for free yesterday. My baker had them to hand out to people to get in the mood for December 31, and to taste his. But he had loads left, so, I did not get one to try, but a bag full to bring home.

Well, pass them around, please.

Do you like a plain one, or one with raisins and currants?

Raisins and currants, please.

Would you like some powdered sugar on top?

Of course, powdered sugar.  They sound like a gay beignet (fruity - get it?  BAD PUN, BAD PUN).

December 31 brings an evening traditionally filled with oliebollen and apple beignets. And lots of powdered sugar.
From the area I come from, there are also thin crispy wafers called knieperties. I should be delving up that recipe, so that I can make some. For December 31 they are flat, to signify the year that has been completely rolled out. For the new year, they should have the shape of krumkakes, to signify the new year, all curled up, not revealing anything of what will happen yet. The recipe for the krumkakes is not as tasty as the recipe for knieperties though, so I rarely make those.

Indeed. Lots of fireworks tomorrow. And lots of "Melkbusschieten". Anything to chase away the bad spirits and haunting ghosts of the past.

I may get a Doberge cake - multi layers of about 1/2 inch cake layers, pudding spread in between with a slightly hard icing.

If you get a bottle of mineral supplement, you can make your water taste like dasani or any of those others - it only takes a few drops, and a four dollar bottle of the mineral supplement lasts about 6 months.

After having lived in Northampton, I no longer drink tap water. Northampton would send annual reviews of the water quality in which they admitted the the number of nasty things in the water exceeded regulations. They followed that paragraph with another that stated that no adverse effects had been found for the past so many years in people who were consuming the water.

Now I filter everything. Price for a filter pitcher: $15 CDN. I am still spending a heck of a lot less than if I bought a $2.59CDN bottle of dasani. I used to drink dasani by the case until I discovered that the minerals are the same as in the supplement.

Here they have Value Village which is the same as Savers in MA. I got wonderful things from Savers. But here everything is worn and well used nonetheless the prices are what you'd pay for something new. Used and shrunken t-shirt: $5.00 and if it has any kind of brand name on it the price doubles. T-shirts from sports events like road races go for $10 and up. In FL I could get a good t-shirt for 64 cents on a sale day.

Gah I STILL haven't got around to watching breaking bad. I keep getting distracted and haring off to the lab haha. That kind of thing always reminds me of something project-wise on the metaphorical (or literal) burner. (although I use a blowtorch rather than a bunsen, for compactness's sake)

Or something i COULD be doing, or SHOULD be doing. Generally gets the grey cells 'a tickin' over. Been satisfying myself with working tonight (plus a little something to keep me awake and wide-eyed, its been a LONG day, working, with a hike break taken for a few hours since 11am yesterday. STILL not done.

Popping next door every so often to chain smoke rollups haha, whilst blasting out disturbed and drowning pool for atmosphere. THATs what I call music to do lab work to, love it :autism:

Someone I know told me to come pick up their old mower to scrap...they bought a new one.

Huge 6 hp Craftsman self-propelled high wheeler with bagger. Their yard is the size of a postage stamp. Carb is leaking gas, and I think I have a set of spare front wheels with more tread on them hanging around here.

It might be 5 years old if that.

Hardly geek skills. You just plug it into a USB port and it just works. It's USB powered too, so it doesn't even need a mains adaptor. What a time to be alive.

Having to do anything geeky with a computer just makes me want to toss the stupid thing out of the nearest window. Apart from old microcomputers from the 80s. They're always fun to take apart and clean and see if I can get them working, but the technology is much simpler and you're not at the mercy of some godawful operating system because most of them don't even have operating systems. They just work.
